MASS 0 027 c The school life at Melrose High School is as diversified as the many personalities of the students who participate. Our high school years are made up of growing pains, tears, happiness, and triumph; all these symbols are centered around our school. To Freshman, Melrose offered the first step to maturity; during orientation we were introduced to the many sides of our school experience, academic, cultural, athletic, and social. The primary emphasis is on the academic phase of our careers. We dis- covered that a great deal of assiduous study must be put into our school work. The astute pupils learned the art of concentration and perseverance, and these attributes are essential to future success. Our teachers form a vital part of our learning experience by initiating us to our studies, giving us insp iration, and kindling the intellectual fires that make us question, search, and learn. How well we remember the foreboding titles, Scholastic Aptitude Tests, College Board Achievements, Vocational Placement Tests, and I.Q. Tests that were presented to us as we planned for the future. Through our Junior and Senior years the tests were taken, the guidance was given, the schools and colleges were chosen, and careers were decided upon. Now an even greater challenge follows! Melrose High School promotes an active cultural life for its students, and there are many opportunities offered in the field of music, exemplified by our various singing groups, a concert band, and our school orchestra. Our talented artists display their works in an annual art show which has gained acclaim as one of the finest high school exhibits in the state. In addition, students may take part in drama or exercise their oratory abilities by debating. These clubs, composed of different talents and abilities, make up the cultural side of our school life. Development of physical fitness is as important as our cultural awakening, and realizing this, Melrose offers many sports to both boys and girls. Athletics build self-discipline, a sound body, and character. Self-discipline is applied during training, a sound body is formed by practice, and character is strengthened by the code of good sportsmanship. Therefore, we can appreciate the impor- tance of the athletic program of our school. Melrose High encourages an active social life with an abundance of games, plays, concerts, or dances in every season, and these activities are enthusiastically supported by the students. Indeed, many of our happiest memories come from looking back on school events and our participation in the Winter Ball, Operetta, games, and play nights. Our 1966 LOG is a record of the many sides of Melrose High School. The academic side prepares us for the future, the cultural life makes us aware and appreciative of the arts, the athletic events mold our character as well as our bodies, and the social activities offer relaxation and enjoyment. Consequently, our high school strives to make us whole individuals by developing the many sides of our personalities. Having been shown the paths, we are ready to go on to make our contribution to the future. 2 Table of Contents Foreword 2 Fall 5 Winter 35 Spring 53 3 Mr. A. Imrie Dixon Principal A poet long ago wrote these words: I am a part of all that I have met.” Each of you, of the Class of 19 66, echo the same thought as you stand ready to move forward into new experiences. Looking back on the past four years, you see much out of your school life which has become a part of you and your personality. Large as we are, and we are a big school, there are intimate experiences: in a classroom, in the thoughts and reflections of a teacher, in an exciting game in the field, at a meeting of a favorite club or activity, in the corridors of the school, and in the vital experience of being a part of something bigger and more important than ourselves — we find all these experiences contribute to what we are as human beings. It is the sum total of all that you have met in and out of the classroom, as well as the skills and knowledge you possess, that has shaped each one of you in your character and personality. Lrom your school you will go forth to meet the future. Your commence- ment is but a beginning of what we all hope will be a rich and fruitful life. As Summer drifts into Autumn, we return for our last year at Melrose High School. Old friends greet us while we look at the traditionally posted” homeroom lists. The familiar smell of newness,” waxed floors, and spotless blackboards is everywhere. The Seniors enjoy seeing the familiar teachers in classrooms, in the cafeteria, and after school. We also look forward to initiating the new” teachers to our ways! Throughout our high school lives, teachers have instructed us, helped us to explore new realms, befriended us, guided our clubs, coached our sports, and chaperoned our dances. More and more we realize that they are an invaluable part of our lives; beyond being instructors, they are advisors, helpers, and friends! Administration Mr. Stanley I. Robinson Mr. Kenneth R. The rough plans were decided upon (after a few bloodless battles) during the summer months, and the editors proudly handed Mr. Hanlon our “complete” outline. “This is fine for a beginning! ” The staffs were soon organized and working madly, selling subscriptions, making posters, composing pro- files, typing, and pressuring businessmen for ads. Early in September, the staff was busy composing the seemingly insurmountable stack of profiles. Even on our trip to the O ' Toole Company, our yearbook publishing house, the Literary Staff lit- tered the bus with slips of block paper and activity sheets. 16 Kristina Kulberg Art Editor Nancy Larson Business Editor While others were busy writing, the Art Staff was laying out pages to add sparkle to our LOG. This year’s staff, headed by Kristina Kulberg, included Elaina Barisano, Jane Han- nabury, Wendy Hasey, and Marilyn Lieber- mann. A familiar scene was Kristina dashing about clutching cumbersome rolls of sketch paper and worn-out pencils. Meanwhile, Nancy Larson and her Business Staff, Linda Hunt, Judy Comeau, Marilyn Troughton, and Linda Curran were buried under a stack of nearly five hundred profiles to be typed. The Winter Ball, Winter Wonderland,” and the popular Twirp Dance were held as in past years. The council participated in the Middlesex League of Student Councils, continued the weekly sale of book covers, and helped to raise money for the scholar- ship fund. The Council is composed of the Sophomore, Junior, and Senior class officers and two representatives from each class. Composed of a representative from each homeroom, the Student Congress contrib- uted much to the high school this year. The Congress’ officers: Richard Skaare, President; Ricky Rudolph, Vice-President; Joyce McGlone, Secretary; and Kenny Rowland, Treasurer, together with their advisor Mr. Stanley Robinson, greatly ex- panded their activities this year. In De- cember, a successful Winter Sporting Goods Exchange was conducted to benefit the Permanent Scholarship Fund. For the first time, all the members were issued identification cards, and the Congress gave an award at graduation to a deserving student or to the school itself. Again, it was the job of the Congress to collect class dues and sell Student Activity Tickets. Representatives from both the Student Congress and the Student Council attended the Eastern Massachusetts Convention of Student Councils at Maynard High School in Maynard, Mass., to exchange ideas with members of other student governments. This was a successful and prosperous year for both organizations. SOPHOMORE CLASS OFFICERS M. Garden, L. Parsons, D. Sarni, P. O ' Hara Student Congress Front Row: S. Meldonian, A. Tivnan, E. The Honor Society recruits honor roll scholars who have at- tained a degree of excellence through a combination of yearly averages and second quarter marks. Initiation takes place twice a year, once in October, and again in February. Many tangible as well as intangible benefits accrue from member- ship in this Society: a gold pin which each student receives as a sign of outstanding work, a permanent pass to the library where students may study, and the wearing of the red tassel at graduation, provided students have maintained an honor rating for three out of four possible marking periods. Here they can assess and ap- praise their work carefully, thus developing their own capa- abilities to a higher level. Of particular profit, too, is the social and cultural growth of Honor Society students. There are ample opportunities to exchange ideas with other honor students, to form close ties with them, to demonstrate lead- ership qualities by their involvement in group activity, and to enrich their classroom learning by taking part in a wide ran ge of functions under the joint guidance of Miss Lutz and Miss Brown. The Melrose High Society sets the tone for a four-year program of distinguished academic contribution by the students to Melrose High School, a contribution which adds immeasurably to their own present and future learning endeavors. 22 PS Future Teachers of America Club First Row: Mr. Grant, P. Girls ' Club i 24 SENIOR MEMBERS Under the leadership of Judy Brown, President, and the three advisors Miss Stuart, Mrs. Hanson, and Mrs. Wright the Girls ' Club began the season with a meeting at which they presented the original Girls’ Club banner to Mrs. George MacPheters, founder of the Club. With this auspicious be- ginning the club was on its way to a busy season with the traditional programs in addition to some innovations. The first project came in October when members of Girls’ Club served as guides for the annual Back to School Night,” helping confused parents find their way through their son’s and daughter’s complicated schedules. In Novem- ber, Cathy McKibben and her committee, with the addition of some helpful boys worked hard on the Thanksgiving baskets; this has been an annual club project to provide over twenty needy families with food for the holiday. Because of the previous success of the John Robert Powers’ lectures, the club scheduled two lectures this year. Both were given by Mrs. Farley, the first concerning fashions, the second, good grooming and posture. In November the Girls’ Club officers served refreshments at the Graduation of the special classes. This year evidence of the re-activation of Friendly Week” could be seen in the gayly -colored posters in the halls and the tags worn by the girls. Since the club planned to renew its contribution to the Permanent Scholarship Fund, the first money-raising project, a movie for children of Melrose, was held in February. Girls’ Club ended the year with a break- fast and program held on the first of May. This was a new type of program for Girls’ Club and it is hoped that it will be carried out annually. JUNIOR MEMBERS 25 Cheerleaders Give me an M ! ” . . . that’s the familiar sound that could only come from our enthusiastic M.H.S. cheer- leaders. Under the leadership of Captain Hony Hoague, the cheerleaders led the crowds of loyal supporters at the football, basketball, and hockey games. Because of the overwhelming enthusiasm during football season, the pre- game rallies were held in the boys’ gym to make room for the avid football fans. The night rally before the big Thanksgiving Day game with our greatest rival, Wake- field, brought out the support, spirit, and seriousness needed in winning the game. Under the supervision of both Miss Flanagan and Mrs. Morris, the cheerleaders remember the noisy and unforgetable bus rides to the basketball and hockey games. Half way through the vic- torious first place season for both the hockey and basket- ball teams, the M.H.S. 12 were fortunate in obtaining new coats and uniforms, thanks to the success of their bake- sales” and other money raising projects. For their loyal and active promotion of school spirit, M.H.S. joins in a big cheer for Hony and her squad. Front: J. Contreas, D. Connors, C. Hasey, C. Hoague (Head), J. Swarrwout, D. Tibideau, A. Adding color and enthusiasm during football season, the majorettes matched the beat of the band with their high and snappy step. Led by Joyce McGlone, the head majorette, the twirlers presented wonderful performances on all occasions and were enthusiastically received by everyone. Along with the cheerleaders, the majorettes par- ticipated in the rallies and helped to make them successful. During the first weeks of football and the long hot practices, both the majorettes and cheerleaders will not soon forget that especially hot day when practice ended quickly and willingly with a long run through the sprinklers on Mr. Hoague’s football field. Thank goodness there was no LOG candid camera lurking about! Lacking an advisor, these girls still carried on and presented many unusual, new, and colorful performances during the halftime periods and at the rallies. Many thanks are extended to our majorettes for their tremendous success as M.H.S. representatives during their many activities. SUB-MAJORETTES A. Thirkell, M. Couture, B. Lane, D. Corkum. J. The 1965 Football Squad finished a successful year winning six games and losing only three. We launched our season with a triumphant victory over Stoneham, but this fine beginning was somewhat marred by the heartbreaking loss to Lexington, 8-6. However, our boys gave the Minute-Men a tough ' ’ battle, but suf- fered a tougher” loss on the first play of the game, when our captain, John Cassis, injured his knee and had to remain on the sidelines until Thanksgiving. This promoted Rennie Welsh to acting captain, and under his leadership we then beat Belmont by the ironic score of 8-6. The following week at Concord, we were behind 18-6; midway through the final quarter the team caught fire as Rennie Welsh blocked a punt and scored, and followed this with the winning touchdown and a score of 20-18. At our second home game of the sea- son, we defeated Winchester 26-8. After this easy win we overcame a fourteen point deficit to beat Lynn Classical 22-14. In a decisive game Melrose lost its opportunity to the League title by a 22-12 defeat to Reading. After this heartbreaker,” the Raiders bounced back to trounce” Gloucester 26-8. On Thanksgiving Day the team closed out the season with a hard fought battle against our strong rival Wake- field, losing by the score of 14-6. This was perhaps the most spirited team in Mel- rose history, and special recognition should be given to Bob Soule, Kevin Hurley, and Rennie Welsh for making the league All-Star team. The M.H.S. Marching Band under the direction of Robert K. Love provided half-time programs at all football games. These presentations featured precision marching and lively musical selections as well as skillful twirling by the Majorettes. Our band is the first in the area to use Patterns in Motion, a marching program developed by the Michigan State University Band. In addition to bolstering our enthu- siasm at games, the Band also provided spirited tempo at our Fall Rallies. Having had successful exchange programs in the past, the M.H.S. Band is working on plans for another in the Spring with a high school from the vicinity of Keene, New Hampshire. Although kept busy with its active schedule, the Band will again present its annual concert, and will con- tinue its tradition of marching in the annual Memorial Day Parade. Also, it will complete its season by participating in the graduation exercises in June. Mason Blacher, a Sophomore, was chosen to represent Melrose, in the clarinet section of the District Band, thereby bringing additional honor to our illustrious Band. 30 Cross Country First Row: R. The three most impressive victories were over Stoneham, 31-28, Winchester, 32-26, and Belmont, 35-24. The Varsity made a fine showing at the League meet at Mt. Hood but lost the League Championship by one point! At the State Meet, the Melrose Varsity came in third in Class B. The Junior Varsity also had a successful Fall; they won 10 meets and lost 1. The Annual Cross Country Banquet for all the League teams was held on the fateful night of November 9. Doc D. Dane, M. Forrest, S. Rhoades. Third Row: Coach Doc” Clark, L. Veneiza, A. Willey, A. Clark arrived at the cafeteria to find total darkness, but the banquet must go on! By flickering candlelight, Doc Clark was presented with a Zodiac watch by Robert Eddy, Captain of the 1965 Cross Country Team. Mr. Fawcett, repre- sentative of all the League coaches, honored Doc with a valuable set of fishing equipment in appreciation for his 33 years of coaching. No apologies for the darkness were neces- sary because a banquet by candlelight made a deep impres- sion on all the boys and their coaches; it was an unforgetable night! 32 Doc” Clark began his career as Cross Coun- try coach at Melrose High in 1933 with a squad of only 15 boys. To date, with a team num- bering more than 60 boys, he has compiled the enviable record of 187 wins in 215 meets. His Middlesex League victories show 15 champion- ships closely followed by 11 second place posi- tions. In 1936, Doc” Clark, together with four other coaches, organized the first state champion- ship Cross Country meet at Franklin Park, and with eight teams competing, Melrose won the first league championship. Over the years Doc” Clark has watched Cross Country develop into a rewarding and popular sport. Doc” lauds all his boys” stating that he has been very fortunate to work with the finest boys and athletes. Doc” Clark is beloved at Melrose High School, not only for producing championship teams, but for instilling in his boys the ideal of sportsmanship; this is a characteristic of all great coaches and athletes! Their only loss was to a strong Lexington team, by a score of 3-2, and their ties were with the experienced Concord and Winchester teams. At the Concord High School Playday, Mel- rose girls tied 1 game and won 2. High scorers for the season were Betsy Belcher and Gail Teevan. Their successful season can be attributed to their com- bination of skill, loyalty, and desire to win. Their all-out ef- fort was exemplified during the week of the fire, when the girls worked diligently with hockey sticks and lawnmowers! Four senior members of the squad spent a week of their summer vacation at Merestead Field Hockey and Lacrosse Camp in Maine, thus increasing their skill and knowledge of the game. The Junior Varsity completed their season with a record of 3 wins — 1 loss — 3 ties. These girls deserve a lot of credit, since most of them were newcomers to the game as well as to the team. With several members showing much promise, and with several planning to attend camp, Miss Flanagan, as coach, is looking forward to another successful season in 1966. First Row: D. DiCaesare, E. During the winter months , our tremendous basketball, hockey, track, and wrestling teams increased our fame. Not to be outdone by the athletic records, our Debate team continued their outstanding polemics while the Drama Club recreated Arthur Milled s The Crucible. We will always remember the lovely vesper ' service presented by the Glee Club during the Christmas season. Some of our happiest memories include the enchanted evenings spent at the Winter Ball and TWIPJP dance: we fondly recall the rush outdoors betiveen classes in order to breath a little fresh air before resuming our never ending studies’ The realization that our year was ending brought a feeling of closeness ’’ to our class as we became truh the seniors ' ’ of M.ld.S ! Through the sponsorship of the Girls’ Athletic Asociation, the girls’ sports program is carried out. Under the leadership of the G.A.A. officers, Gail Teevan, Betsy Belcher, Anita Soccorso, and Janet Johnson, the organization has more than fulfilled its goal. Although the activities of the Tumbling Club were hampered by the fire, the Club was still able to hold weekly workshops and to participate in informal competition with other schools. The club is justly proud of an addition to their equipment, a new balance beam. With Gail Teevan as president, Carolyn Hoague as vice-president, Joyce Foster as secretary, and Karen Kjell as treasurer, the Tumbling Club had a successful, though perhaps light, season. With its membership increased to twenty-eight, the Modern Dance Club began its performing season with a Christmas show at a Boston orphanage. In April, the senior members danced in the Boys’ Gymnastic Team Exhibition and produced their own show. This year’s officers were Dorothy Connors, president; Linda Carter, vice-president; Deborah Edmonds, secretary; and Lorraine D’Alelio, treasurer. A number of senior girls again participated in the regular Leaders’ Club Program. Under this program, the girls, as leaders, help with the guidance of all girls’ gym clases within the school. Not only does this practice aid the gym teachers, but it enhances the importance of leadership and good sportsmanship. 36 Leaders ' Club and Modern Dance First Row: J. Sullivan, K. Santos, A. At this time the club members worked on posters for the forthcoming evening of Scenes and One Acts. Other activities included trips to the Tufts Theater to see the modern version of Antigone”, and to the Harvard Loeb Theater to see Tortuffe”, a comedy by Moliere. Immediately after Christmas vaca- tion, rehearsals were started for Arthur Miller’s play, THE CRUCIBLE, in which the horror of the Salem witch trials is depicted. In the leading roles were: Constance Gandolfi, Wayne Bailey, Elizabeth George, and Robert Puffer; the supporting roles were played by Scott Ridlon, Richard Orsillo, John Pollack, and Audrey Griesbach. Our final year at Melrose High School is coming to a close; this year is only the termination of one important stage of our lives. As we prepare to graduate this spring, we are looking outward into a new and challenging world, for it is a time when each of us shall venture forth as an individual. Wash i Par On a cool April day, thirty-seven of us boarded the bus which was to carry us to Washington D.C. on the Annual Junior Trip. After a long but lively journey, we invaded the Manger-Hamilton Hotel late in the day. The next morning, unaware of the hidden pitfalls of excessive walking and sightseeing, we be- gan a hectic four days which provided us with rich and humorous memories and extremely sensitive feet! ngton ty Let by Mr. Hanlon and Mr. Roberts, our faculty chaperones, and Mrs. Lavina Anderton, we had frantic and wearing activities during the six full days. In the evenings we relaxed with such soothing activities as crawling up the Washington Monument or tramping through the wax museum.
