She is as much a part q'Mehlville Senior High School as the American flag flying bwre it. Dedicated to her przwssion, this woman has been teaching school jbr twengf nine years, six ry' them here at Mehlville. Her greatest desire has been to instill in her pupils just a small portion zyf the great love she her- sebffeelsfor her subject. Andj?w of us willforget the sound UShake- speare being read with a southern accent in her classroom. In her own way, she has given many students a real appreciation QF good literature, and a hearyf respect fir higher learning. Her own education has been excellent, for she possesses an A.B. in Language Arts, and M.A. in Language Arts. She has worked conscien- tioushf and given hersem heart and soul, to her prcwssion. A strict task- master, she nevertheless possesses a warm sense if humor, and a deep sense fyfhumiligz. Although Mehlville High School can never say or do enough to repay her, the Reflector stajj' hopes that this dedication will be a token cfthe feeling in eveU2one's heart for Miss Magi Frances Word dedicatee Q' our 1960 Rqflector. af? l'CLl'lC05 oreworcl In publishing the 1960 Reflector, we have endeav- ored to relive, page by page, a wonderful year at Mehl- ville High School. We have tried to create, through pictures and printed words, a living memory which will be enjoyed for many years to come. If, as you scan the pages of the 1960 Reflector, you can recapture moments ofjoy and excitement, our purpose shall have been fulfilled. 5' I., Gonfenffi .S-,cAoo! gradd page 6 .szclzoof graing page I8 SCAN! grawn page 72 Seine! g,,,f,., page 90 The administration guides the students toward better Citizenship, and keeps our school running smoothly. We, the seniors of 1960, have come to the end of our twelve year journey. Graduation night is near, and the Sen- ior trip and the Prom are just happy memories now. This is our commencement, the beginning of a new way of life. But we had happy experiences and wonderful times during high school, so before stepping out into the future let us once more remember the laughter and tears of the past as we turn the pages of this 1960 Reflector. Our freshman class arrived at the junior high school in 1956. The Shamrock Rock, first dance ever sponsored by our class, was a huge success. The Senior High seemed big and frightening as we arrived, sophomores now, in September of 1957. But al- ready we were bubbling with school spirit, working on the Student Council, Reflec- tor staff, and the Sophomore dance, the Hawaiian Holiday. Our junior year was full of excitement, as Mehlville won the South County Tournament, and 17 juniors were initiated into the National Honor Society. We gave the seniors a Prom to re- member in the Gold Room of the Sheraton Jefferson Hotel. And then at last we were seniors. We saw Mehlville's first football and wrestling teams in action. The seniors worked hard to make the Student Prints bigger and better. The Homecoming Dance honored alumni from the class of 1950. The annual Sadie Hawkin's Day was observed by wildly dressed seniors. We have so many wonderful memories. . .sights in Washington D. C. . .and New York. . . pastel formals whirling at the Prom. . .senior rings. . .the strains of Pomp and Circum- stance at graduation practice. . . Yes, we are seniors at last. And so very soon we will graduate, and go our separ- ate ways. There will be new friends to meet, and new memories to hold near our hearts. But we will never again experience the thrills and disillusions, the triumphs and uncertainties of our high school days. We cannot help being a little sad as we bid farewell to the teachers, the classmates, the textbooks, the school that was our way of life for four years, Mehlville Senior High School, our Alma Mater. Their Student Council representa- tives worked hard and well, and Sophomore members of the Re- flector and Student Prints staff did their best to make school publica- tions better than ever. In Mehlville's first year of foot- ball, many Sophomores were mem- bers of the team. They gave us a good B basketball squad. And their class sponsored a successful dance on March 19. University City teams were experienced ball clubs, but Mehl joofdaf Rollins, Foster, Kramer, Smith, Bussen, Spudich. Approximately fifty boys reported for the early pre-school practice. Forty-five boys made up the final squad, which did an excellent job in their very first experience on a football field. Leitsendorfer, Bicrmann, Taylor, Durham, Stanfield, A., Stanfield, M, 76 Touchdown scored! This was a thrilling moment for MHS. Mehlvi1le's first football team, in the season's opener against Patton- ville, scored the first touchdown in the history of the school. Coaches McCarty, Goodwin, Eggemeyer. Mehlville played a B team schedule against nine other schools teams. All of these ville showed that it was adapt to learning the game quickly by winning one, tying one, and losing by a very close margin in all other games with one exception of Pattonville, in the seasonls opener. H Coach Lane Goodwin, with assistants Michael McCarty and Carroll Eggemeyer, was at the helm of Mehlville's first football squad. The coaches feel the boys did a super- ior showing in their first year in the sport and are looking forward to some outstanding play- ing in the future. Mehlville will go into varsity football com- petition next year with twenty varsity players and ten junior varsity lettermen. Several boys were outstanding players and showed poten- tial of better things to come. Next year we will encounter some tough competition, but MHS in their second year will be prepared to fight for victory. Uardifg The newly organized Varsity Lettermenls Club, under the direction of Mr. Lane Goodwin, put into practice this year a new constitution. The purpose of the club is to further and promote athletics, improve the standing athletics in the school, foster good sports- manship, promote good fellowship, and encourage the development of proper school spirit. Membership in the club is limited to boys who are awarded a varsity letter in a major sport, received an award in two separate minor sports during the same school year, or received a minor sport award in the same sport for two successive years. Football, basketball, track, baseball, and wrestling are the major sports. Minor sports are to be added at a later date. Coaching the Panthers for the 1959-1960 sea- son was Mr. Gerald E. Koch, who played his basketball at St. Louis University, where he was an outstanding eager. Fourteen boys from the junior and senior classes made up the Varsity team. Five seniors and one junior were regular starters. Washburn and Borstelljumped at center, Lawrence and Tesson played the forward posi- tions, while Corsuch and Daher were backliners. In a victory over Valley Park, Tesson scored 41 points, breaking the old school record of 34. !.?aaLefLaf ,dual CH lam. Mehlvillels B team was composed of boys from the spohomore class. They played games on the same nights as the Varsity, and participated in various tournaments. The team's biggest asset was their will to win and their hustle. A new deal at MHS was the formation of the C bas- ketball team for freshmen. Mr. Brooks coached the boys in games against most of the schools in the South County league. The formation of C teams helps to develop the fundamental skills of the athletic early in their high school careers. The Panthers played a heavy schedule of thirteen games. Bill Mahar, one of last year's outstanding pitchers, returned to the mound for another successful season, while Tom Byrd again scored many of Mehlville's runs. Tim Borstell, Steve Eyerman, Ray Ker, Bill Lawrence, and Terry Tesson were among the returning seniors, who along with other boys played hard on the diamond, thrilling MHS baseball fans. Tom Byrd. l 8 2 Hoechst, Mahar jl'aCL Spring 1960 saw Coach Mitchell Launius busily .vorking out with Mehlville's track team. With several veterans returning and a new crop of promising freshmen, the cinder sport was on the upgrade at Mehlville. The sprints looked as if they were in good hands with Roland Cullman, Jim Harr, and Ron Hurt. Cullman was undefeated in the 100 and 220 yard dashes, but pulled a muscle in the preliminaries of the league meet and could not compete. Sophomores included Bill Taylor who set a new jun- ior Division record of 55'2 in the shot as a freshman and finished second in the league in the discus. Phil Spudich showed great promise as a pole vaulter and George Foster with the shot. A host of promising sprinters and hurdlers included Al Stanfield, Tom Rollins, Dave Wagner, and, Terry Faust. About forty-eight boys ranging from fresh- men to seniors turned out for the team. The wrestling squad was later cut to less than thirty boys. MHS competed in a large number of matches which were scheduled both home and away. The wrestlers have a fine showing in their first season. Several boys showed much skill and were consistent winners. Sports minded maidens of MHS are given an opportunity to participate in sports of their choice through the Girls Athletic Association. To become a member of the GAA a girl must earn five hundred points. These points are earned by trying out for teams and extra points are given to girls who are chosen for the teams.
