But here I am, writing to my American friends. A.F.S. did a wonderful thing to me and I don't know if working for the program in Brazil will ever pay it back. You just can't imagine how many first times have hap- pened to me since last Au- gust: first plane travel, first contact with Americans, first problems of adaptation, first bowling, first drive in. You provided help to me in all this. A.F.S. and I would have failed without your help and where I say you I in- clude students, teachers, ad- Visors. One thing I can assure you: there will be always a thought for M.H.S. from somebody's mind in the Southem of Brazilg I mean it, always. Maria Maria De Goes, Mary Ann Hungerford Never was I so surprised and excited as on a rainy Friday afternon, in the mid- dle of June last year, when I came home to find my A.F.S. acceptance propped up on the counter. I was to go to Vic- toria, Espirito Santo, Brazil, to become a member of the Martins family. The whole house was in an uproar the next week and a half. After all preparations, my family said good-by to me at the AFS building in New York City, on June 30th. I was to stay there for a day and a half of orientation be- fore boarding my plane at Kennedy airport, with fifty- five other American teen- agers. My Brazilian 'family was small-only my mother, fath- er, and a sister, Luiza Maria. As all Brazilians, my family and their friends were warm, and understanding. In only a few weeks, I had built up many close and enduring ties. My home for the summer, Victoria, a city of sixty-five thousand, is the capital of the State, Espirito Santo. Each person in the city whom I came in contact with added his own touch to my wonderful experiences.
