If you have any aches, pains or ques- tions concerning health habits, don't hesi- tate to visit the school clinic. Our com- petent staff consisting of Dr. Roach, Mrs. Warren, Mrs. Colton, and the dental hy- gienist, Mrs. Liskoff, is trained and ex- perienced to give us proper care and advice. They not only try to cure our present physical illnesses, but also pre- pare us for good health in the future. Mrs. Lisl-:off gives dental checkups and cleans our teeth for future protection. Dr. Roach and his invaluable aids, Mrs. War- ren, and Mrs. Colton, have administered polio shots to those who desired them, and various other shots to college-bound stu- dents. We all depend upon and appreciate this health department. Recognizing the need for a richer educational program for the schools of the State, Section 1958 of' the Education Law provided for the establishment of Boards of Cooperative Educational Services. The program under such a board can then furnish to the schools many special teaching services on a co-operative basis which ordinarily can not be afforded or at least gainfully employed. Historically speaking, the Board of Cooperative Educational Serv- ices now serving Orleans and a portion of Niagara County was first established for Orleans County in 1956. Later, effective February 1, 1958, the new supervisory district and Board of Cooperative Educa- tion Services for Orleans and Niagara Counties was established. Component districts comprising the present cooperative system include: Albion, Barker, Holley, Kendall, Lyndonville, Medina, and Royalton-Hartland Central schools. Otto J. Stewart was elected the first District Superintendent and Executive Ofiicer of the Board. Presently, special services include: Reading, Speech Correction, Psy- chology, Dental, Physical Education, Driver Education, Music, and Library. The central office for the Orleans-Niagara B.C.E.S. is lo- cated on the second floor of the Medina Public Library Building. Stricl-:en by polio in 1947, Karen was unable to con- tinue attending public school, but she has not allowed her handicap to interfere with her education. Under the guidance of the faculty, she has continued her studies at home. During 1955-56 the high school, with the co- operation of the Bell Telephone Company, installed a direct line with Karen's home, and equipment was arranged so that she was in direct communication with her classes and teachers every period. Individual tutor- ing has fulfilled state requirements during the other years. Karen is humbly modest about her achievements, but the Class of '59 is proud to have her with them. We well know what these w rds mean, now, after four years of high school. Perhap , at times, taking our moments in school a bit too lig tly, we tended to yearn for the day when we could sho t to the skies the glorious news of our freedom from the tiresome restrictions. Glancing back for a brief instant at the times th t we now find ourselves reluctant to leave behind, w see countless golden hours crowded with the dear mem ries of the happy and even sad times we have shared ith our classmates. September 3, 1958-we were there! Remembe the curious feeling that engulfed us as we took a se t in Senior Homeroom for the first time? We felt a bi like a young girl with her first pair of heels or a youn boy after his first shave. But it took very little time f r us to adjust to this new sensation. If we did not already know Mrs. Bartlett, Mr. isiti, or Mr. McAllister, we soon learned about them, spe- 46 cially if we had trouble finding our seat after the warn- ing -bell. One thing Mr. McAllister will never learn is the alphabet that the seniors followed when they filed into assembly. Remember the day Varden's photographer arrived for Senior pictures? How the combs flashed! What ties were straightened! An air of excited anticipation pre- vailed over the Seniors until the proofs came. Then what laments were sounded. But all was not lost and the finished product was really not so bad after all. We cannot look back without recalling the pride we felt for the ten State Scholarship winners in our class. Nor can we overlook that from our ranks have come two finalists and an honorable mention in the National Merit Scholarship competition. We'll never forget the dear friend we found in the Arista trophy. Now as our memories slip into eternity we snap this last picture of a year that fostered the mixed emotions of laughter and tears, of success and disappointment, and of victory and defeat. The picture of the future is up to us. One of the most prized honors in our school is membership in its honor societies: Arista for Jun- iors and Seniors and Wakapa for Freshmen and Sophomores. Good marks, excellent character traits, and leadership are qualities required for selection. Both societies are active and perform many services for their school. Arista members supervise the second-floor office during Miss Heady's lunch hour, present awards to students who have done heretofore unrecognized work for the school, present the Arista trophy to the class with the highest honor point average for each marking period. Wakapa has charge of lost and found and hall duty. Each society chooses new members yearly, Arista with an impressive tapping assembly, and Wakapa with a fun-filled initiation banquet. During the months ot .November and December approximately one hundred fifty students were trouping into the hallowed halls of M.H.S. every evening at seven o'clock sharp. The reason for this unusual activity was Show Boat, an operetta presented on December IO and ix. Starring Nola Britt as Magnolia and James Rankin as Ravenal, and featuring Amelia Iorio as Julie, Jack Beedon as Captain Andy and Peggy Hart as his wife, the plot of the operetta covered a period of time stretching from the I88O,S to 1927. Under the direction of Coach Lyn- daker, wrestling has become a major sport in Medina High. The public has been made aware of the fact that good sportsmanship is an essential in any sport, and wrestling has contributed to this fact. Very few realize the physical training that these few boys undergo each night. Because this is a relatively new sport in Medina High School, the boys are just beginning to receive the recognition they so rightly deserve.
