Run! There's only one minute left ... We are suppose to be in the liberary. “Oh. It's Tuesday again?” shouts Mr. Glasgow. “Do you have a tie I can borrow Ron?” And so it goes, another faculty meeting, only one of the things that it takes to keep the school running smoothly. It takes all types of people to keep a school running. The Cooks, who prepare our lunch. The Janitors, who keep our school clean. The Bus drivers, who give us a safe ride to and from school. The Teachers, who give us our education. The Principles and Superintendents who handle the administrative work. The Secretaries who make sure everything runs smoothly. The Couse-lors who help the students in tasks anywhere from a class change to just being there when they're needed. These are the many different people who take part in making Medical Lake High School the very Best. 1. The Superintendent of the Medical Lake School District. Mr. Dunn. 2. The Senior class officers had their work cut out for them when they prepared for this dance. Posters were made, decorations were bought, the royalty ballots were sent out. and the gym was decorated. “We put many hours into this. We had to make phone calls. We called the Display House to get prices on crowns and had to organize royalty meetings to make sure they were all in their places for the basketball game. We tried to make this dance inexpensive because we wanted to save our money for our Senior activities, said John Williford, the Senior Class Vice-President. The other class officers had a busy year also. Junior officers had the difficult job of organizing Prom. The class ring sale was organized by the Sophomores. while the Freshman officers were busy learning the ropes and concentrated mainly on the Fall candysale. Class Officers ? I • • • Leaders Lead The School and community crowded on the front lawn and sidewalk of M.L.H.S. anxiously awaiting the final outcome. Suspense filled the air as the police blocked oft' Barker Street to prevent any major accidents. Vehicles were ready to roar... on your mark-get set-GO! The wheels burned rubber as the best decorated Senior bed pulled slightly ahead of the Freshmen bed. They raced to the half marker and the five people sprang out of the racing bed, while the five people who were pushing jumped in. Both classes had some difficulty and they were bedpost to bedpost, but the Seniors conquered the Freshmen, and finished in a roar by two bed lengths! One of the victors, John Williford cxclaimed,”I knew there was no way the Freshmen could win, because they did not have the experience. It might have been close for awhile, but our agility and speed pulled us through,” saying with a smilc,“Likc everyone knew it would!” The A.S.B. officers did not just lead the students of Medical Lake High School, but the hard-working team worked with the students. The school caught onto their firy enthusiasm of the officers during Homecoming Week. They went above and beyond the call of duty to make it exciting for everyone to get involved. The entire week was a great success from the noontime activities and dress-up days to the halftime ceremony with a special surprise of fireworks that started the dance with a bang! Mr. Grothe, their advisor. fccls.”The executive board has shown the willingness to work hard, to develop personal leadership skills and to get as many people involved as possible in the A.S.B. activities. It has been a pleasure working with them.” The A.S.B. officers kept their composure and dignity during all of the student council meetings, even when there were heated controversies. The officers paved a smooth path for all students to follow- in improving our high school. I. Prcsidcnt-Buich Stcvcnson,“Mr. B of the C team! 2. It was the night of the Induction Ceremony and the new inductees were sitting nervously in their scats. By the end of the evening, after all of the speeches were given, the new inductees were official members of the National Honor Society. National Honor Society is a club dedicated to serving the school and its surrounding community. Their activities range from the Senior Citizen Service Program to donut sales. 1. Students Show Their Knowledge As the commentator of the contest asks his question, all the contestants’ minds quickly start to think. A buzzer goes off and the fastest player answers the puzzle. This is the type of action that goes on in a knowledge bowl competition. The knowledge bowl is a sport of the mind where the quickest will win. The contest consists of three teams competing against each other. Medical Lake competes with at least thirty schools in Adams, Lincoln. Whitman. Spokane, Ferry. Pend Oreille and Stevens counties. The purpose of knowledge bowl is to train the memory for quick recall and to broaden one's horizons on all kinds of knowledge. It takes a person with a borad. general knowledge and knowledge of present day happenings to be competitive in this sport. Mrs. Groenen, the coach of the team, believes that it is the best preparation for a higher education a student can get. 1 think this year's team is as good as last year's team, if not better. commented Mrs. Groenen. Being on the knowledge bowl takes dedication with practices two to three times a week starting right after school begins. Selection of the top four and an alternate is done by the team members themselves. When in competition there is no loser, because just being a part of this great team is being a winner. I. Junior ROTC Creates Future Leaders The air was tense, the crowd was silent the only sound heard was a whoosh. A scream broke the silence as the balloon lifted off the ground commemorating the first time man left the earth in flight. The Medical Lake's ROTC also enjoyed the festivity by getting rides in the helium aircraft. The ROTC class was formed to teach leadership skills to the young people, and to prepare them for roles in a career field was its main goal. Extra-curricular activities offered to the students enrolled in Aerospace Education include drill team, colorguard, rocketry' and model clubs. If students complete all three Aerospace Education courses they had special advantages in applying for the military academy appointments and in being granted possible four year ROTC scholarship. I. I see many talented musicians that I would have liked to perform with.” This year all four bands. Concert. Symphonic. Wind Ensemble, and Jazz contain many young musicians that have a great opportunity to develop their talents in the next few years. The size of the band as a whole has dropped in the last few years, but Mr. Lundgrcn. the director of Medical Lake's music department, is looking forward to the next few years as larger numbers of talented freshmen will be welcomed by the Cardinal music department. This was the big day, tryouts for the 1983-1984 Drill Team members. This special event started with two returning members demonstrating the routines which the contenders were to perform. During their demonstration both girls suddenly stopped and turned extremely red! They both had made the same mistake at the same time, which resulted in having to start once again. Even though we had no advisor this summer we were able to work hard and become like a family, commented Sharon Oliver. In March the girls were very successful while attending State Competition. The Drill Team accomplished a great deal this year. Spirit Rising Behind The Scenes Boosted By Cardinal Maids and Rahs There arc two hard-working organizations at Medical Lake High School that never receive much recognition. The Cardinal Maids and Rahs were there encouraging school spirit with various functions. Our lives arc filled with many memories with family and friends that we will forever cherish. One night each year fathers and daughters gather together to share one of these moments. The Father-Daughter Banquet hosted by the Cardinal Rahs creates a good feeling between families in our school. Donna Stevenson and Mr. Kyle were guest speakers. relating the unique times fathers and daughters share. Mrs. Haugen explained. “The banquet offered opportunities to have special memories and times with our families at school. Cardinal Rahs started the Big and Little Sister Program for incoming freshmen, they make pumpkin and turkey grams, and sale mums for Homecoming. Golden Garbage is collected by the Rahs. and they sale booster items at the games. The Cardinal Maids focus on promoting spirit in the athletic clubs. They design and make locker decorations, organize the Santa pictures, and the biggest functions they put on arc the Sports Award Banquets to honor the athletes in front of family and friends. I. But again in game 2, the young Medical Lake volleyball team pulled together for the victory, the score 15-11! Medical Lake had won games before, but this was the first real team they had defeated and was the start of a good season. Though the volleyball team didn’t get a league championship, they did, however, take a great step for Medical Lake, for they were the first girls’ volleyball team to ever have a winning season at M.L. They not only won games, but their games were exciting to watch. The crowd loved them and followed them whever they played. Deer Park hoping to hold onto its lead. The third quarter showed no significant difference with Deer Park only stretching their lead to points. But this “comc-from-behind” team was not beaten yet. They put it all together to be the best they could and cxplodec out-score Deer Park by twenty-one points. A total of thirty-four points in the fourth quarter alone. Medical Lake defeated D Park sixty-nine to fifty-four! “Offensively, the team reached its maximum potential in this game,” commented cardinal co Dave Olzendam. It was a proud victory for the cardinals. This year's varsity basketball team was fast and exciting. The games were always fun to watch and suspense-filled right to the v end. They were a well rounded combination of offense and defense and every player strived for and achieved an ove improvement in skill. Coach Olzendam also expressed that. “The players had dedicated themselves all season to reach team go The improvement from the beginning of the season to the end was tremendous. They had all worked very hard to accomplish i warding season.” Altogether the team members gained great experience and had fun competing as a team. They sought to m the 1983-84 season a successful and prosperous one and they accomplished much as a group and as individuals. Congratulati on a fine season. j 148 Baskelball I I. The Cards displayed their shooting talents, which they had been perfecting during practices. Center Jenny Jundt and zone guard Cinda Kammer-mann did an excellent job along with the other players in defeating the Knights with their defensive tactics and offensive persistence by a score of 35-34. The lights were out. The gym was silent. The victors traveled back with the feeling of success, but as Miss VonLanken stated, “Success is not measured by the win loss record rather by the clfort and positive attitude.” Success was having a good time and at the same time showing spirit and unity, as the V.G.B.B. team did.
