The goal of the Staff is to show to you the progress attained in the past year. We hope that you shall find pleasure and enjoyment in thumbing through the pages of this book. 2 Dedication In the lives of young men and women, probably no one plays a more instrumental role than the elementary school principal. TWELVE YEARS IN THE SAME CAGE Left to Right: Mill Grub, Larry Henning, Jim Krell, Rita Fait, Allen Grub, Jerry Hines. i6 History As fall rolled around in the year 1946 there were twenty-three new pupils jumping up the front steps of the old school house at M. L. We all went through our trials and errors with Mrs. Reasor. Our ranks increased to twenty-eight in the second grade. There we memorized our A-B-C's and were all rewarded with little airplanes, to our delight. The third grade found us out at Espanola—twenty-seven strong. The next year found us at the same place but we had lost two of our rank. At Espanola we had ourselves a great time because there was nobody there but the two grades. We diminished in rank to twenty during the fifth grade. Many of us were given the chance to participate in band for the first time. In the sixth grade we were upstairs with the high school students, under the guidance of Mrs. Willms. What a ball! The eighth grade was climaxed by graduation, in which twenty-one participated. They were as follows: Miriam Ackerman, Virgil Andrews, Rebecca Boland, Rita Fait, Jon Grallap, Allen Grub, Mill Grub, Jack Harkness, Larry Henning, Jerry Hines, James Krell, Dale Lowery, David Palman, Stanton Parmeter, Sharon Perrin, Georgia Perrin, Gerald Reitmeier, Tommy Rogers, George Sims, Ed Sonneborn, Ronald Stutheit. The Freshman year found us quite green frosh-twenty-six strong-as we went into initiation, which showed just where we stood. In the Sophomore year we were really glad to discard the name of Frosh and do some initiating of our own. That year our basketball team went to state for the first time in the school's history. The next year proved to be quite different for us as upperclassmen. The year was highlighted for us by giving the Junior-Senior Prom and Banquet. The Senior year was highlighted by the sneak and graduation as twenty-one seniors marched up the aisle and wept on the way back down. There were eight students who went through twelve grades together. They are: Rita Fait, Jerry Hines, Jim Krell, Mill Grub, Allen Grub, Larry Henning, and Gerald Reitmeier. Besides these there were six more that went through high school together. They are: Beverly and Barbara Aucutt, Stan Parmeter, George Sims, Edward Sonneborn, and Miriam Ackerman. Gerald Reitmeier Prophecy Here we sit watching the latest advancement in modern space movies, the futurama telescope, invented by two ingenious master minds of Medical Lake High, GERALD REIT-MEIER, and STAN PARMETER. Gerald and Stan came across this magnificent invention in 1968, while flying over their old high school in their new sweptwing spaceship, thinking of what their classmates would be doing. We see BARBARA AUCUTT on the planet Venus. Barbara has a new space-a-vision program shown every Saturday afternoon called, Captain Cupid's Comics . RITA FAIT and BEV AUCUTT spend their time as stars of the show, battling for the attention of the main camera. The scene switches to the coast of Southern Pluto, PETE BURNETT, a professional beach comber, has found a new type of outer-space Bermuda shorts. ANN METCALF, who invented the shorts, has appointed Pete as vice president of her Weather-Wise-Wear firm. LARRY HENNING was seen on the moon. He is accredited with being the first to make a success of farming green cheese. Larry is working on a new secret formula that will enable him to grow cheese colored like the rainbow. If Larry's experiment proves to be a success, he will pass it on to MIRIAM ACKERMAN on earth. She will use it on the hair of her customers in her beauty shop. Next we watched a fashion show on Mars. We saw RITA KENNEDY and her daughters modeling mother-daughter space suits. JEAN LEE and DOROTHY FOWLER are in charge of a charm school which is strictly for Martians only. We enjoyed a short intermission, and then we saw JERRY HINES, ED SONNEBORN, and JIM KRELL on earth. They are the three leading chemists of the world. But due to the fact that they cannot stand the noise of exploding test tubes, they have decided to retire and are now holding offices in the White House. GEORGE SIMS has a very profitable business raising trout in Siberia. Since frozen foods are so popular in the jungles of Africa, George has no trouble shipping and selling his trout to the natives. SALLY BROWN is helping VIRGINIA OGG with her night club act. Sally blows up balloons, and Virginia dances with them. In Italy we saw PENNIE SANDRITTER in Rome. She now has her own private corner to sell pizza pies. Across the street JON GRALLAP is giving her tough competition with his Grallap's Gargling Gigantic Grill, for Great Pizzas. ALLEN GRUB, a millionaire, has bought the state of Texas. Out of the generosity of his heart, he has appointed MILL GRUB as assistant to the assistant to the assistant in charge of counting his oil wells. Now that you are confused-we leave you this way. 18 Class Will BEVERLY AUCUTT—I will my ability to go steady four years of high school to any lucky freshman. DOROTHY FOWLER—I will my relish of fancy foods to Ginger Britt because most of them are fattening. Juniors The title of upperclassmen finally rests upon the shoulders of the class of '59. As Juniors it is their duty to put on the Junior-Senior banquet and the prom. The year was started out in the right manner when Lynda Fuller, Junior queen candidate, was crowned Carnival Queen. The class officers are: Noel Vaughn, president; Bob Llewellyn, vice president, and Frankie Trautman, secretary-treasurer. Student Council representatives were David Knotts and Jeanette Rantzow. Initiation is under Sophomore supervision and allows last year's Freshman to literally take their spite out on someone else. The initiation came off without any casualties and the dance made up for their previous maltreatment. Carnival princess this year was Carmen Knudsen. They placed third in the contest. Mickey Hersh was elected class president; Carol Sloan, vice president, and Vicki Dodge held the office of secretary-treasurer. Class officers were elected at the beginning of the year and they are as follows: Gail Hackney, president; Ernie Merriman, vice president; Margie Murlin, secretary, and Barbara McCrory, treasurer. Our student council attended both Northeast District student council meetings this year and received important information on student body functions of other schools. This year has been filled with many activities that have been sponsored by the student body, and I hope enjoyed by everyone. Among these are the annual fall carnival, the National School Assemblies, and the Christmas party. Medical Lake's athletic program is also under A. S. B. sponsorship. In losing a conference game to Freeman by a score of 46-44, the Cards lost their chance to place first in the county. This meant a play-off between three teams for second place and a berth in the District Tournament. The Cards won the first game by beating Otis Orchards 41-28. The determining game was played against Spangle with the Cards losing in a three minute over-time by a 43-38 score. This put Medical Lake in third place and out of the running for a spot in the District or State Tournament. Returning lettermen this year were Shorty Nilles, Jim Krell, and Gerald Reitmeier. The starting five were Shorty Nilles, Mike Myer, Jim Krell, Gerald Reitmeier, and David Knotts, with Earl Reeves and Stan Parmeter substituting regularly. Jerry Hines and Jim Cogswell filled the other two spots. Graduating seniors are Jerry Hines, Jim Krell, Stan Parmeter, and Gerald Reitmeier. This led to a season's record of 12 wins and 8 losses. Team members are as follows: Bill Murlin, Glen Hagstrom, Kenny Niccolls, Mickey Hersh, Gary Tooke, Gary Gilbreth, Roy Mann, Bob Morris, Ernie Merriman, Doug Sonneborn, Danny Nilles, and Doug Dodge. Hagstrom, Niccols, Nilles, Merriman, and Gilbreth captured starting positions but were pushed hard all season by the boys on the bench. Kenny Niccolls and Glen Hagstrom alternated for the open position on the A-Squad. This position went to the boy that was outstanding player during the B-Squad game and was open to anyone all season. 46 Basebal Front Row, left to right: Gary Gilbreth, Jerry Holten, Jim Krell, Mike Myer, Stan Parmeter, Jim Cogswell, Bill Morris, Gerald Reitmeier. Baseball turnouts were small but the boys showed plenty of talent. The regular season started in early April with league and practice games. The season finale is the District Tournament late in May. A spot in the tourney depends on games won in conference play. With ten returning lettermen, two transfers, and four new boys, the team looks forward to a fine season.
