In 1941 three bears came to reside at the front entrance of the Medical College of Virginia ' s West Hospital. These bears, carved out of stone, are placed in the heart of the medical campus. This appears to be out of place until one realizes their history and symbolism. Dr. W.T. Sanger, chancellor emeritus, discovered the sculpture in Brookgreen, South Carolina over 40 years ago. He was so impressed with the masterpiece of stone that he had it reproduced for Mrs. A.M. Huntington, the original sculptor. In 1941 the Huntingtons presented MCV with this gift referred to as the Three Bears. Today, our bears are more than greying stone structures weath- ering through time. They symbolize those long ago days when Indian medicine men appealed for the strength and power of the strongest animal in the land. To the American Indian the bear symbolized the power of healing. To the students, faculty, em- ployees, and passers-by, the three bears remind us of its three- fold responsibility to educate those who would serve humanity, to preserve and restore health, and to seek the cause and cure of diseases. As students at the Medical College we take on the responsibility of continuing the work of those who have gone before us. They have laid the foundation and we are continually building upon it. This is not an easy construction we speak of, but one that is unique and changing. Each has a stone to add to this structure. So let us draw our strength from the symbolism of the Three Bears as we prepare to leave our own heritage. Like those before and after us; yes, we will grin and bear it with many rewards to be gained!
