Physical Therapy, 1958 Occupational Therapy, 1950 The School of Allied Health Professions The School of Allied Health Professions was established within the Medical College of Virginia of 1 Virginia Commonwealth University on January 1, 1969. The establishment of the School provided an administrative framework into which existing programs were placed to direct the development of new programs in response to the growing need for allied health manpower. At the outset, hospital (now health) administration, medical technology, physical therapy, radiologic technology and x-ray techni- cians were incorporated in the School. Later, in 1969, nurse anesthesia was started; occupational therapy was transferred from the west campus in 1970 and patient counseling moved its base from MCV Hospitals to the School in 1970. In 1973 a baccalaureate program in Health Care Management was introduced, followed in the latter part of the decade by a baccalaureate program in medical record administration (1978); a baccalaureate program in clinical radiation sciences and a master of science in nurse anesthesia both began in 1979. In 1981, we began our first joint doctoral program between the Department of Physical Therapy and School of Basic Sciences. The Department of Health Adminis- tration started its first doctoral program in Health Services Organization and Research in the fall of 1982. Hugh Greene David Hohl Clarke Latimer Elisabeth Marling Glenn Mosele Mitchell Richman Department of Health Administration The overall purpose of the Department of Health Administration is to provide educational programs and services related to the organization and administration of health services. In achieving that purpose, the department ' s principal functions are to provide- high-quality education leading to careers in the administration of health care institutions, agen- cies and systems and to provide advanced training and education for persons who will teach, plan, evaluate, and investigate health care poli- cies and medical care systems. Corollary functions are to provide assis- tance and other services for community organizations and to conduct health services and health policy research (1983-84 Medical College of Virginia Bulletin). 18
