Looking Back: The Monumental Church The Monumental Church, located just to the east of the Nursing Educa- tion Building and MCV Hospital on Broad Street, is one of the major early 1 9th century architectural landmarks in the country. Built in 1814, the church was designed by a noted architect, Robert Mills, who was a pupil of Thomas Jefferson ' s. The church was built on the site of the Richmond Theater as a monument to the 72 Richmonders who lost their lives in the famous Theater fire on December 26, 181 1. it is a significant landmark in the history of the Episcopal Church, for it was known as the bishop ' s church , after Bishop Richard Channing Moore, the second Virginia bishop of the American Episcopal Church. Among early pewholders were Chief Justice John Marshall and John Allen, stepfather of Edgar Allen Poe. The church was deeded to the Medical College of Virginia Foundation in 1965 by the Episcopal Diocese of Virginia, and is in the final stages of restoration. The Monumental Church will be used as an ecumenical house of worship, as well as for lectures, seminars, and cultural events.
