MCV received its charter as the third, or Gamma, chap- ter in 1927. A segment of the wood in the handle of the official national gavel comes from the flooring of the Egyptian Building, the oldest building on our cam- pus. Membership is restricted to junior and senior stu- dents of acceptable scholarship in any field of the sci- ences and mathematics. Root. The Brown Sequard Chapter at MCV was organized in 1940. Membership is based on scholarship, personal hon- esty, and potential leadership. Alumnus membership is granted for distinctive achievement in the art and practice of scientific medicine. Honorary membership is granted to eminent leaders in the field of medicine. A.O.A. has stimulated medical i-esearch, the highest educational and ethical standards, as well as the nobler professional ideals. 20 Rho Chi had its beginning in 1908 when the Anstolochite Society, as the organization was first named, was established at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. It declared as its main purpose to advance pharmaceutical science and promote good fellowshi]). In 1912 the organization became officially recognized as a campus honorary group. In 1919 a second chapter was established and it became a national organization. In 1922 the name was changed to Rho Chi — the svTnbol ( ) of which bears a fitting similarity to the prescription sign. Since that time Rho Chi has expanded into sixty-three active chapters across the nation. Rho Chi Lambda Chapter was established here at the School of Pharmacy in 1929. It has had as its object the promotion of scholarshiji, friend- ship, and the recognition of high attainment in the pharmaceutical sciences. Usual activities consist of a program promoting further study in the pharmaceutical sciences and an annual banquet following initiation of new members. In addition, AKK enjoys the brotherhood and guidance of several doctors of the MCV faculty who are alumni and honorary members of the fraternity. AKK is the largest fraternity in the School of Medicine. The functions of the fraternity are primarily social for we believe that the best way to change pace is to occasionally take a night out with a date and attend a dance, combo party, picnic, swim party, etc.!! AKK is well known for its timely and enthusiastic social functions. In recognition of a predictably regular increase in the number of brothers acquiring wedding bands, the fraternity also offers the op- portunity for wives to participate in the programs of the Wives ' Club of AKK. The Theta Eta Chapter was established at MCV in March, 1889, as the fourth chapter in the U.S. Phi Chi is now the largest national and international medical fraternity. It was founded to promote the high ideals of scholarship and brotherhood among its members and all. of medicine. Activities of the Theta Eta Chapter include monthly meet- ings at which noted members of the MCV faculty and promi- nent Richmond citizens discuss topics of interest to the mem- bers and to themselves in an informal atmosphere. Rush par- ties and smokers, picnics, and Combo parties. Our Wives ' Club is active and its members participate in several community- oriented programs during the school year. Mowbray Historian Delta Sigma Delta The first fraternity in the field of dentistry was organized November 15, 1882, at the University of Michigan. It selected the letters DDS to designate its dental category. The Greek letters Delta Sigma Delta were adopted instead of the Arabic. This year has been a particularly active and good one for DDS here at MCV. Much time and energy was spent by the brothers remodeling our fraternity house in preparation for the annual conclave held here in April. Although hosting the conclave was the climax of the year, it did not overshadow our usual yearly activities. This fall we sponsored the second an- nual Economic Seminar for the dental school student body which offered advice in financing, insurance, tax structures and investment toward retirement income. Aside from our monthly social parties we held a Christmas party for underprivileg ed children and sponsored a ski trip to Bryce ' s Canyon Ski.Eesort. Finally, we are looking forward to sending off graduating sen- iors this May with our Senior Banquet which we have each year as our final activity together. Delta Sigma Delta goes beyond the friendship and relaxation found in all good fraternities. We have as our objective keeping high the standards of dentistry and promoting in the minds of dental students and practitioners a spirit of fraternal cooperation toward scientific, ethical and professional progress. The Tau Chapter of the Medical College of Vir- ginia was installed on March 20, 1953. The objectives of Kappa Ep- silon are to unite women students in pharmacy, to stimulate in its members a desire for high scholarship to foster a professional con- sciousness, and to provide a bond of lasting loyalty, interest, and friendship. Each year KE goes Christmas caroling to Terrace Hill rest home with the members of Kappa Psi. It also helps Phi Delta Chi give a Christmas farty for underprivileged children in the Richmond area. To foster professional consciousness, it sponsors a college bowl in the spring of the year between panels from each of the pharmaceutical fraternities. To honor the new pledges, KE gives a formal in the spring of each year which is financed by proceeds from an ad book. KE is a small but growing fraternity which is looking eagerly to the future with plans to make it dynamic in promoting the professional- ism of pharmacy. 168 Suzanne Ray Genie Saunders Mary Ann Terry Donna Addington Linda Angellilo Marlise Blanks Betty Brown Linda Clements Susan Comette Marsha Derflinger Sue Ann Ely Sharon Gauthier Phyllis Goodbar Alice Habel EUie Hunter Jean Jensen Charldeen Justice Carol Mangano Phyllis Proctor Kappa Psi Kappa Psi Pharmaceutical Fraternity is the nation ' s oldest and largest professional pharmaceutical fraternity. It is composed of fifty-seven collegiate chapters and was originally chartered in 1879. The aim of the fraternity is to promote the high ideals and standards of the pro- fession and to provide a medium through which students pursuing the course of pharmacy can develop fellowshit). Upon returning to school this lall, the brothers of Kappa Psi have maintained continuous activity in service, professional, and social projects. Socially, Kappa Psi had its annual Back to School open dance September 27 and a closed party October 31. January is the month of i-ush functions after which bids for membership are distributed to selected individuals. Initiation of goats occurred during the first three weeks of February. The formal banquet is our major social event of the year. This event marks the full acceptance of the new pledges into the fellowship of the fraternity. The annual awards banquet is in April in which outstanding brothers will be recognized and newly electd officers will be installed in their offices for the following academic year. Nickolson 171 Phi Delta Chi Phi Delta Chi Fraternity was founded on Novem- ber 2, 1883, on the campus of the University of Michigan. The following excerpt from early Frater- nity records gives some insight into the reasons for Phi Delta Chi ' s inception: Both students and faculty recognized that such an organization would bring students of pharmacy together for the dis- cussion of scientific questions pertaining to phar- macy and its sister sciences. Originally Phi Delta Chi was known as Phi Chi and its membership was limited to men in the fields of pharmacy and chemistry. The name was changed to the present Phi Delta Chi in 1909 and membership require- ments were altered between 1928 and 1933 to include only persons major- ing in the field of pharmacy. Since its founding, Phi Delta Chi has char- tered 55 undergraduate chapters and initiated over 20,000 members. Alpha Delta Chapter of Phi Delta Chi was chartered in 1925. Under the able leadership and counseling of Mr. Frank P. Pitts, Alpha Delta Chapter became a strong and active organization on the Medical College campus. Today Phi Delta Chi and its Alpha Delta Chapter serve to fulfill the educational, social, recreational, and cultural needs of its members. A strong feeling of brotherhood and common cause exists between all Phi Delta Chi brothers. Upholding and enhancing public confidence in, and respect of the profession of phannacy are permanent goals of Phi Delta Chi. Jerry Reynolds President Ron Shure Vice-President C. M.
