PRESIDENT OF MEDICAL COLLEGE OF VIRGINIA The Medical College of Virginia owes much to the leadership of Dr. R. Blackwell Smith, Jr., its fourth President. An alum- nus of MCV and a phamiacologist by pro- fession, Dr. Smith has held several govern- mental positions and has served as Dean of the School of Pharmacy. As evidenced by the number of professional, scientific and honorary organizations in which he is active, his well-rounded social and pro- fessional life makes him a valuable citizen as well as an able educator and a progres- sive leader. Robert Blackwell SMrrn, Jr., Ph.D. Preside}2t TO OUR 1962 GRADUATES: The Centennial a : X-ray in 1938 t This, the twenty-fifth volume of The X-ray and coinci- dentally the Centennial issue, is regpectfully dedicated to that inborn interest in the treating, healing, and curing art which has so fostered and continued through- ■ out our century of ejcistence. Commencing with that initial year and early time in 1838, dreams have gradu- ally materialized into fabric of sterner stuff, until now at the beginning of the second century of progress the Medical College of Virginia carries on through its teachers, its student body, and its alumni, the sanne transcending love for medicine which has persisted, maintained, and directed it for a hundred years. Now, as we approach our One Hundred Twenty-Fifth Anniversary year, let us hope that our Students, our faculty, and our alumni may still maintain that same transcending love for medicine , for the associated professions, and for the College that will enable all groups to work together and strengthen the ties that will bind them m a forceful team, able to understand the traditions of our past and to accept the challenges of our future. Sincerely 0
