SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS We are physicians now — the rectangular parchment says so. We are vested with power to call a man back from the gates of death or send him plummeting into a chasm of iatrogenesis. Hippocrates has dictated our creed and the chiefs our technique leaving for us only the will to serve. We can think of the human body either as a Temple of God or as the storyteller of Baghdad looked at it, Man is but a minutely set, ingenious machine for turning with infinite artfulness, the red wine of Shiraz into urine. Discretion leads us down precarious paths. We are pressed by the patient to medicate and warned by counsels of old to think long before supplementing the natural forces, for Moliere said that, nearly all men die of their medicines and not their disease, and Cicero reflected, Because all the sick do not recover, then medicine is no art. All that is left remaining then is to seek understanding, to have patience to wrench from Nature her secrets one by one, and as we stand by the bedside of the sick, their bodies a churning factory of interacting chemical systems their organs bombarded by hormones and toxins, may we be roused to wonder how a harp with so many strings can stay in tune so long.
