At some time, almost all of the students seek the help of Dr. William Kay, student health physician, and Miss Edith West, student health nurse. 3n jftlemoriam DR. WILLIAM BRANCH PORTER Dr. Porter, professor emeritus of medicine, died October 4, 1960, at the age of 72. He was a native of Amelia County. In 1911 he graduated from MCV. He served as an intern at the old Virginia Hospital here and as a resident at Hygeia Hos- pital here in 1912-13. He returned to MCV and became an as- sociate in medicine and assistant professor of therapeutics and pharmacology. From 1917 to 1919 he was a major in the United States Army Medicine Service. He then returned to MCV. In 1923 he became physician-in-chief at Lewis-Gale Hospital in Roanoke but came back to MCV in 1926. For 29 years. Dr. Porter served as chairman of the Department of Medicine at MCV. Because of illness he retired in 1956. During this year the Board of Visitors elected him professor emeritus of med- icine. Dr. Porter is highly acclaimed for his contributions in the development in the School of Medicine. In 1952. 35 of his former residents formed in his honor the William Branch Porter Society. Each year it presents an award to the outstanding senior graduate in medicine. Dr. Porter was a fellow of the Association of American Physicians, past president of the American Clinical and Cli- matological Association, former vice chairman of the American Board of Internal Medicine, past chairman of the medical sec- tion of the Southern Medical Association, and past president of the Richmond Academy of Medicine.
