Dr. Vyndham Boiling Blanton Dr. E. Trible Gatewood Dr. Blanton was born in Richmond on June 3, 1890. His education included an A.B., Hampden- Sydney, 1910; M.A., University of Virginia, 1912; M.D., College of Physicians and Surgeons, 1916. He served with the , rmy in Vorlcl War I and after graduate work in New York, Berlin, and Edinburgh, entered the practice of internal medi- cine in Richmond in 1920. He was appointed to the MCV faculty in that same year. He became Professor of Clinical Medi- cine in 1940 and was made Emeritus Professor of Medicine in 1958. He also held appointment as Professor of History of Medicine from 1933 to 1938. Dr. Blanton ' s outstanding contributions as a phy- sician and teacher were compared with achieve- ment as historian, author, and civic benefactor. In addition to membership in many medical organi- zations, including fellowship in the American Col- lege of Physicians, he was chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Union Theological Seminary and President of the X ' irginia Historical Society. He died January 6, 1960. Dr. Gatewood was born in James City County December 7, 1887. He was awarded the M.D. de- gree at the Medical Clollege of Virginia in 1910. After internship he entered general practice before retiuiiing to New York to specialize in otolaryn- gology. After completing his New York residency he took bronchoscopy training at the University of Pennsylvania under Chevalier fackson and later at- tended the Haslinger Clinii in Vienna. He joined the MCV faculty in 1920, became Pro- fessor of Clinical Otology, Rhinology and Laryn- gology in 19M, and was m;ide Emeritus Professor in 1958. Dr. Gatewooil was highly regarded in the com- munity as a physician and citizen. His many medi- cal society affiliations included fellowship in the American College of Surgeons and membership in the American Laryngological Society, a senior national society of limited membership. He died January 5, 1960. 3n Jlemoriam Dr. Porter P. Vinson Dr. Vinson was born in Davidson, N. C., Janu- ary 24, 1890. His academic attainments included a B.S. 1909; M.A., 1910; and D.Sc. 1925, all at Davidson College; M.D., University of Maryland Medical School, 1914. His internship and residency were accomplished at Trudeau Sanitorium, Mon- treal General Hospital, and the Mayo Clinic, the latter interrupted by service in World War I. After twenty years as Chief of Bronchoscopy at the Mayo Clinic, Dr. Vinson came to Richmond in 1936 to head this service as a Professor of Medicine at the Medical Clollege of Virginia until his death August 28, 1959. His great energy, professional competence, and dedication to the College made him a real factor in its development over the past twenty-three years. Many appearances before medical groups and more than one hundred published papers accoimt for widespread recognition of Dr. Vinson ' s part in the development of the specialty of endoscopy. He was a Fellow of the American C oilege of Physicians. Dr. Atwood M. V ash Professor and ChaiiTnan of the Department of Oral Surgery Atwood M. Wash, D.D.S., F.A.C.D., a distinguished ahuTinus, served on the facidty of the School of Dentistry since his graduation in 1919 until his untimely death, February 27, 1960. He will be re- membered by students for his teaching skill, his modesty and patience of imderstanding. His faculty associates will hold in fond recollection his great warmth of friendship and profoiuid wisdom.
