Say does that Star Spangled Banner yet wave, O ' er the land of the free, and the home of the brave. Francis Scott Key DEDICATION It seems fitting that in a country such as ours, where there are so many things that represent america, we should dedicate this YEARBOOK TO THE MOST REPRESENTATIVE SYMBOL of all . . . Old Glory . . . For it is under this symbol that we pro- fessional MEN AND WOMEN ARE ALLOWED TO CONTINUE THOSE STUDIES THAT DEAL WITH THE LIBERATION OF MANKIND FROM THE SCOURGE OF DISEASE, WHILE OTHERS ARE HARD AT THE TASK OF LIBERATING MEN FROM THE EVILS OF TYRANNY AND OPPRESSION. Broad Street Entrance of the Medical College Hospital COITEITS i. THE SCHOOLS Administration Medicine Dentistry Pharmacy Nursing n. FRATERNITIES in. ACTIVITIES i FEATURES FORE II II D The theme presented herein represents the birth of our flag, and just as it was born into a war-torn country, we are being born INTO A WAR-TORN WORLD. Then LET US FOLLOW EXAMPLE IN OUR OWN LIVES, THAT WE MAY CON- TRIBUTE TO THE RECONSTRUCTION OF LIFE, LIBERTY, AND THE PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS IN A LIKE MANNER. Ill SCI There are several stories connected with the origin of Old Glory but it is an accepted fact that it was made by that staunch patriotic lady of early America — Betsy Ross. To Our Students To graduate young men and women with a ma- tured understanding that education is a life long process to which formal schooling only contributes importantly, and with a deep conviction that this process must be implemented in every possible way, is an objective which every educationist aspires to see achieved. This objective has special validity for those who enter the professions. High Class routine professional contacts, unceasing perusal of the current literature, attendance at meet- ings of the profession, visits to workers elsewhere in the same field, and many other means of stimu- lation and growth are indispensable. There is yet another procedure which has not been made so completely available this far. A centre like the Medical College of Virginia, for example, should include a continuation education building, with lounges, conference rooms, auditorium, dining room, and a reasonable number of dormitory rooms. Here a program of postgraduate education should be set up to meet the needs of our graduates of each school and others having kindred interests. This means a variety of scheduled activities, some las ting a few days, others lasting a few weeks or even months, in which our staff and other specialists from the outside world participate as co-learners with returning graduates. Almost any emphasis in which any group is interested should be provided and so planned that many of the most stimulating contacts and discussions will be made informally, in the dining room, in the lounges, in addition to the more formal conferences, discussions, and clinics. Your college hopes to achieve this objective as soon after the war as practicable. Its success will depend to a large extent upon how well prepared our voung people are for this type of educational experience even before their graduation. It is be- lieved that when the continuation education centre begins to function it will stimulate a fine interest within the student body, preparing them for its maximum use in subsequent years. Theirs is an obligation that must be fulfilled through the T i) i i fl J] years until this great war is history. Then and then only, can they content themselves to attend the civilian population. That is die reason the United States Navy saw fit to take them and train them. This is Memorial Hall, a dormitory for nurses; formerly the Memorial Hospital. Dr. H. L. Sophomore Medical Class Class History April 5th, 1943 — We were handed a box of bones and told to have no fear. It was as simple as that. So were we, as we were to be constantly reminded. We settled down and started to breathe. Rex Tillotson became der Fuehrer. Then it came. TT and the boys went off to Camp Lee to learn the place of KP in a medical students life. They came back resplendent in khaki. It was not until later that some of the more dapper members were to be subjected to the indignity of Bell Bottom trousers. Schiaperelli couldn ' t have done better with those little chapeaux with the black bands, could she, George? Then came the heat wave — and as if that weren ' t enough, they had to throw in a little connective tissue and, I can ' t tell at this magnification, and I ' m just throwing this out to you for what it ' s worth. But it is rumored that the military program for freshmen was to be discontinued. And the verbal spanking along with Dr. Osterud ' s courageous attempt to console us with: Some people expect Cadillac performance from Ford motors. In some way Mrs. Jones ' immeasurable help, Dr. Osterud ' s devotion, and the innumerable cokes in the basement of the library and McGuire, we survived the summer. Slightly bedragled but alive. September and the nnals in Anatomy. 1 ne password became irtead and Neck. On to Chemistry — to learn how to fill a pipette. You invert the milk bottle seven times, NOT six, NOT eight, SEVEN. It is not PH but pH. Mr. Jackson I ' ll have you know that these experiments do not work for people who use that kind of language. Oh, you naughty boy! Add the Baron ' s bugs. It ' s very simple . . . They look like a bunch of grapes. But Ray Stone knows all about Athletes foot. Then came Christmas Holidays. Don ' t those gray hairs look distinguished though? And then there was the first time that we saw patients. Dr. Walker sent us over to the hospital to practice some physical diagnosis. What do you think is wrong with this patient? Why, his heart is on the wrong side. We were so proud of finding that, that it didn ' t occur to us until hours later to wonder why he was in the hospital. I guess we know a heart beat when we hear one, maybe. But I still don ' t like to stick my finger, it hurts. That is just the way the formula says to work it. Then who started that stampede by telling Thomas that there were only ten pharmacology books left in the storeroom when there were really eighty? Charley Llewellyn thinks paregoric is good for anything that ails you — What difference if the patient is a parasjoric addict. Mr. Barney, please bring me my roll book. D-Day! Business as usual. An air conditioned lab. For that Dr. Apperly is the favorite, even if we do have fallen arches because of museum lectures. Miss Swecker, have you ever felt a palpable thrill? No answer. Harvey Haag Day is over; the ranks of the bachelors is sadly de- pleated; Brooks is losing sleep wondering when this history will be finished (Ed. note, AMEN); and Dr. Evans just started a revolution by telling us that we were a pretty good class. We came together collectively from college campuses, army posts, and naval stations, with the distinction of being the first class to enter in uniform. Those first few days and weeks were a confusion of new faces, new tasks, and frat rushings. Rut by some miracle we managed to emerge finally, with a bag of bones, a ton of books, and a newly inspired zeal to give our best for our school and our profession. We have whittled away at cadavers. Peered through our micro- scopes at what seemed a never ending stream of minutia, passed through the complexities of Bio, learned much and been exposed to more. When we pause at the end of this our freshman year, we discover that through nine months of intense effort and application on our part, aided by the guidance, encourage- ment, and personal example of our professors, we have become an integrated part of the great work being done here at MCV. And so with rumors of that Sophomore year and memories of McGuire Hall and fourth floor Clinic threading their way into every thought, we bid you good-bye for a short vacation. D. N. Dickey Secretary-Treasurer We sing unto the glory of the Class of Forty-Four Within our bosoms deepest memory cherish evermore, We ' ve known of sorrow, tasted joy, and bitter was our lot, But still our heads are still held high, our spirits dampened not. For men in ' 41 there were who came to Richmond town, Men who sought the higher plane, a class of great renown, Let ' s call the roll and here now, the class of Forty-Four, Oh tell me does that mighty class still sound off with a roar? Ackerman, Allen, Burke, and Cave, Clement, David, and Furr, Dickey, Edison, Gardner, too. They ' re men who will endure. Getty, Goldstein, Grandis, and Harris, Herring, Heyman, and Long, Johnson, Kirshen, and Lassoff too. Unto the class belong. Micone, Mirmilstein, and Moore, Rosenblatt, and Reames, Reshevsky, Shull and Segillo, Are men with potent dreams; And never let you fear, There is Walker and old Woolard To keep guard from the rear. In ' 41 Prof. Negus pranked through Bio-Chemistry, We made friends with each carcass as we learned Anatomy, V. J. Ackerman Historian Prosthetics lab in Autumn time was where we hit our stride, The coecal cubes this class turned out were pointed to with pride. In ' 42 we lost a few, as Sophomores we became, Wise fools we were ' tis true and yet we worked ourselves insane. Simpson every day or so, would send us all to hell, With every verbal lash, we ' d come out righting with the bell. ' In ' 43 to fourteen men, we sadly said good-bye, We ground our teeth and jiledged ourselves, our class would never die. What tho ' we had been beaten, and our ranks were thinning fast, We said we ' d stick together all for one until the last. Into our very Senior year, and now in uniform. They grieved us and harrassed us, our sins were multi- form, But on we fought with bur and stone, and worth the nagging doubt. For dawned that September day that saw us getting out. So come clasp hands, you stalwart men, and raise on high your voice That you ' re a man of ' 44 within yourselves rejoice. For we ' ll stand fast, as hard as stone, our progress never halt. Regardless of the size of our class we wanted to make history. But quick. Take the clinic by storm was in our minds — the charge was on — the charge that carried us into strange surroundings. In spite of the conglomeration of red tape that sur- rounded us, the work in store for us took on a new light, very dazzling in some respects. Our work took on a new and gratifying significance. For now we would be performing our work that we had prepared for during the past two years. Now our inlays, amalgams, gold foils, and dentures, would be used for more than just exhibition Did we take the clinic? you ask. Well, not exactly. The fact that we had a lot to learn about dentistry soon displayed itself. However, we had secured a foothold and we vowed that it would not be shaken loose. We knew that we must gain all the experi- ence possible from the clinic so that in the near future we could step out into the world to serve our country, and after peace comes we will serve the world. Sophomore Dental Class Alec Epstein Historian Charles Barker Treasurer Class History This class has the unique distinction of being the first Army and Navy dental class to be enrolled at the Medical College for World War II. We entered as civilians and wound up as mates and In 1 43 we fought the battle of Camp Lee. There we went through the trials an d tribulations of the lowly private, and according to our sergeant, we were the lowliest he had ever seen. In the end all ended happily, for in 10 days time we left dear old Camp Lee. You may be sure that this was one time that every one was glad to see the portals of McGuire Hall. Our joy was short lived for immediately we were plunged into the battle of McGuire Hall. During this engagement we heard the light artillery of prosthetics, anatomy, bac- teriology and metalurgy; the heavy guns of anatomy and prosthetics and not to mention the engagement in which tear gas was used — that of oral anatomy. I think every one there had something to cry about. As in all the battles, there were casualties and as soon as most of the boys came through with flying colors, they were shoved into the battle of ' 44. In this battle, the heavy barrage was really laid down when the heavy guns of operative, C B, and prosthetics. It is our sincere hope that the casualties will be light and all will return for the battle of 1945. Paul T. Baker, Cramerton, N. C. Charles T. Barker, New Bern, N. C. Thomas J. Bell, Jr., Conway, S. Gi Sim Chappelll: Secretary C 1 a s s II i s t o r y Our class has the honor to be the first to enter the Medical College of Virginia in the uniform of our Uncle Sam. Of our class of forty-six, twenty-nine represent the army while fourteen uphold the navy. Once we were all together, no time was lost in getting under way in our chosen profession. The first quarter consisted of Oral Anatomy, Cross Anatomy, Prosthetics and Bio-Chemistry. It did not take us long to learn that all things are not so simple as they seem and ihat the mesio-distal is greater than the bucco-lingual, with some exceptions. The professors and fraternities were most kind and offered us every assistance to help straighten us out from the mad rush and confusion that surrounded us. At this writing the rush still exists, but with the passing of time, we are taking it more in our stride. In addition to studying dentistry, part of our time is spent in the army and navy training programs, under which we are preparing ourselves to serve our country to a greater advantage, and for this opportunity we are grateful. We are proud of our class for in it exists the friendly competitive spirit, which ultimately leads to better work and better men. Marvin W. Aldridge, Vanceboro, N. C. Morton O. Miller, Ph.G., M.D. To this distinguished gentleman, we of the School of Pharmacy would like to snow our admiration and respect in dedicating this portion of our yearbook. SCHOOL OF PHARMACY Senior Pharmacy Class Ralph C. Tolar President Charles G. Thomp Elizabeth S. Parsons Vice-President Secretary and Treasurer Class His t o r y Due to the fact that only one of the original half hundred students who made up this class remains, the history is somewhat vague and dim. But when we look over these pages in years to come, many happy and valuable me- mories will spring forth in our minds. Six persons proudly call themselves Seniors in Pharmacy. For a while it looked as though the one woman would be the only candidate for a degree in the fall. The National Emergency became critical, all of our men were in the eyes and minds of the draft boards. But luck remained on with them and they were allowed to complete this session. Let us look, briefly, into the past . . . As mentioned before, fifty students entered Pharmacy School as freshmen in the fall of 1941. Three were women. Mortor and Pestle Club, A. Ph. A. and various other organizations provided social life for us. This has continued throughout the years. The next year, brought forth five transfers to our ranks. We were the first sopho- more class to battle the heat of economics in the summer with books rather than with the beaches and the mountains. We entered our third year with firm determination that we could and would keep our school open even though the school roll had dropped tremendously. We did too! We laughed and played, worked and worried together until finals were over and we went home for Christmas. The New Year brought us a new year, the one which had been in our minds for so long. Each of us felt a little lost in the lecture rooms with the professors and all SIX mem- bers of the class. But our thoughts were on that day in September, a much greater day than the one in September, 1941. For on this day in 1944 MCV will become our Alma Mater and we say Good-bye to school days. Our class had been greatly reduced in the past two years, having suffered heavy losses to the armed forces. There were about thirty of us who entered the freshman class in July of 1942. Of that class only four of the original re- main. We welcomed several new students in our sopho- more year who came from other colleges to join us in the pursuit of our profession. These swelled the depleated rolls caused by the calling up of members of the army and navy reserve forces. The war has also affected us in other ways. We entered the school in the first class under the accelerated program and suffered under the heat of summer months. Despite this heat of those summers our burdens were lightened by the careful and painstaking guidance of our understand- ing professors. When we entered school, our goal seemed distant and almost unattainable because four vears is a long time. Now three of these have passed, seemingly, as if a few hours. As we go on to take up the role of seniors, our class is to be one of the smallest in the history of the School of Pharmacy. However, we feel that it will be one of the best. We will work even harder than ever before to attain the goal which we seek, that of pr acticing the art of Pharmacy. Robert David Anderson, Dante, Va. Eleanor Leah Boothe, Wakeficlil, Va. SCHOOL OF NURSING Senior u r s i n • Class Judy Watkins President Florence Hylton 1 ' ice-President Margaret Virginia Mitc Secretary Carrie Lee Dotson Historian C 1 a ss History Time has sped rapidly by since the arrival of seventy carefree ignorant, potential, Angels of Mercy at Memorial Hall, the largest class accepted in the history and the first to enter after the completion of the new hospital. We settled down to our studies of the arts and skills of nursing. We had scarcely started when the clouds of war burst, bringing a newer challenge and a deeper significance to the work we were to do. All too soon we found our- selves juniors with new responsibilities. Graduates were answering the call for nurses in the armed forces which re- sulted in newer obligations. We overcame the obstacles and assumed a new feeling of security and confidence in our work. At last we were Seniors proudly wearing our black bands. At this time the newly organized Cadet Nurse Corps was received and we could hardly wait to wear the uniform signifying our participation in the service to our country. Today we stand fifty-seven strong, united in one cause: To serve. Training has been during a difficult period, but in a period in which there have been more challenges and experiences for us. We know that we could have received no better training any where. Our ability comes from three years experience and study in a democratic and inspiring institution. Those years are of great significance in our lives and will affect our decisions in the future. We look to the future, so soon to be present, with ideals and inspirations, instilled by our faithful and never-tiring instructors and friends having hope and faith in our hearts that we may achieve our goal in life. Our work was hard, the classes long — But most of us made it, with time for a song. Soon we had been here exactly a year, Juniors now with little to fear. We learned to brave most things alone. In the afternoon reinforcements arrived with ac- counts of the new flag act of June 14. The men set about to collect material for the flag. That of establishing the Student Union Building. After many hard months of intensive work these few cut their budgets and saved money enough to earn the confidence of college officials who made up a substantial sum of money and gave it to us. In addition to this the Student Government kept its other duties and purposes that are set forth in the constitution as: 1. The promotion of college activities. 2. The promotion among the students of the Medical College of Virginia of a more brotherly feeling for ea:h other and more love of the college. 3. The settlement of all affairs which concerns the best interest of the student body. 4. The attainment of those things that go to make the college greater in every way. Indeed, The Medical College of Virginia is extremely fortunate to still have this privilege, for many colleges and universities have been forced to discontinue their pub- lications because of war-time shortages of materials and manpower. The staff of the X-Rav has attempted to portray this college year simply and com- pletely, so that in future years you professional men and women can look back and recall this hectic vear that was spent in preparation for service to your country and to your fellow man. Boyd -Issistant Business Manager William C. Winter Associate Business Manager Casper S. King Associate Business Manager Skull Bonn It has been my responsibility during the past nine months here at Medical College of Viiginia to edit the weekly pub- lications of our college, the Skull and Bones. Being elected to this office by the student body of our college, I have tried to be worthy of their trust by giving them the best student paper possible. The responsibility of editing our weekly publication is no small one. Heretotore the editor of the paper has had the bulk of the writing to do. By organization of a functional s taff, this responsibility has been shifted and the main pur- pose of the editor is now as it should be: to edit and con- struct the paper. The Skull and Bones was never intended to be more closely associated with one of our schools than with any other. However, during the past few years it has had as one of its chief complaints the fact that it leaned toward one school. During the past year I have tried to put out a truly representative paper — a paper which is of interest to students of the Schools of Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, and Nursing. I believe that undeniable improvement has been made along this line. For the first time in several years, the paper has had an abundance of pictures. I believe this should also be con- sidered a definite improvement. Many new features were added during the year, most of them meeting with the hearty approval of the entire student body. Therefore, I am inclined to believe that the Skull and Bones for 1944 has been an exceptionally good student paper when we take into account such disadvantages as the accelerated program, wartime shortages, etc. Students Arthur K. Black Business Manager William A. Neirman Editor-in-Chief have been given a well-balanced and representative paper; a paper with features of general interest; and a paper suggesting reforms here at the Medical College of Virginia. It has been the main purpose of this year ' s Skull and Bones to inform, reform, and entertain. If we have ful- filled these purposes, our year certainly must be considered successful. The accomplishments of the past year are due mainly to a functional as well as co-operative staff. To all the mem- bers of the Editorial Staff of the Skull and Bones I extend my thanks for your good work, co-operation, and support. You have made my work during the past year very enjoy- able, and at the same time you have helped me to give the students of all the schools a better paper. The Business Staff also deserves my thanks for their splendid co-opera- tion and support throughout the year. A great share of credit is due Dr. Sidney S. Negus, Professor of Chemistry at the college; he has been most helpful during the past year in giving your editor his per- tinent advice on many matters, and also in giving me inside news of the college. To him I extend my hearty thanks, and I hope he will see fit to help each succeeding editor along as he has helped me. It has indeed been a distinct honor and pleasure to edit your college paper; and that the responsibility and trust you placed in my hands has not been forgotten is my final thank you for placing me in office. VIRGINIA IS THIS PRODUCT COUNCIL ACCEPTED? This is the first question many physicians ask the detail man, when a new product is presented. MEAD PRODUCTS COUNCIL-ON-PHARMACY ACCEPTED: Mead ' s Oleum Percomorphum With Other Fish Liver Oils and Viosterol; Mead ' s Cod Liver Oil Fortified With Percomorph Liver Oil; Mead ' s Viosterol in Halibut Liver Oil (liquid and capsules); Mead ' s Cod Liver Oil With Viosterol; Mead ' s Viosterol in Oil; Mead ' s Stand- ardized Cod Liver Oil; Mead ' s Halibut Liver Oil; Mead ' s As- corbic Acid Tablets; Mead ' s Thiamine Hydrochloride Tab- lets; Mead ' s Niacin Tablets; Mead ' s Menadione in Oil. If the detail man answers, No, the doctor saves time by saying, Come around again when the Council accepts your product. ' If the detail man answers, Yes, the doctor knows that the composition of the product has been carefully verified, and that members of the Council have scrutinized the label, weighed the evidence, checked the claims, and agreed that the product merits the confidence of the physician. The doctor can ask his own questions, and make his own decision about using the product, but not only has he saved himself a vast amount of time but he has derived the benefit of a fearless, expert, fact-finding- body whose sole purpose is to protect him and his patient. MEAD PRODUCTS, COUNCIL-ON-FOODS ACCEPTED: Dextri-Maltose Nos. 1, 2, 3; Mead ' s Dextri-Maltose With Yeast Extract and Iron; Pab- lum; Pabena; Mead ' s Cereal; Mead ' s Brewers Yeast (powder and tablets); Mead ' s Powdered Protein Milk; Mead ' s Powdered Lactic Acid Milk No. 2; Alacta; Casec; Sobee; Olac. ALL MEAD PRODUCTS ARE COUNCIL-ACCEPTED No one physician, even if he were qualified, could afford to devote so much time and study to every new- product. His Council renders this service for him, freely. Nowhere else in the world is there a group that performs the functions so ably served by the Council on Pharmacy and Chemistry and the Council on Foods. Mead Johnson Company cooperates with both Councils, not because we have to but because we want to. Our detail men can always answer: Yes, this Mead Product is Council-Accepted. But today that old proverb has been out- moded with the modern facilities of life insurance. Yes, that ' s one of the fine things about life insurance — a man can put all his eggs in one basket!
