Class History Silence hung like a blanket over dear old M. H. S. It was the morning of Commencement Day. The great school building of yellow brick gave an almost imper- ceptible shake. The moment had come when the caravan of '34 was to leave its oasis of four years and set out into the vast desert, whence we know not. Gathered for the last time as a class within the sheltering walls of its dwelling place, as a feeling of sorrow for leaving, and wonder for the future settled on each one, all began to look back over the past years, everyone adding his tale of reminiscence to the general story. 'Remember when we were Freshmenfspoke the first, and what an awful feeling it was to come into this building, not knowing where to go or what to do? The only consolation was that no one else knew either-and how proud every one was of our new school building! Of course being such small children we weren't given much chance to show our ability but I remember how elated I was when a few others and myself were picked to sing in the chorus of the first operetta 'The Gypsy Roverf We never dreamt that we would have to give it a second night because the auditorium was so packed! I'll never forget that first party we held in the spring in the new gym, put in another. A'We decorated, which had never been done before, and gave prizes, and all of the fellows wanted to learn to dance. We didn't do much else that year, but we certainly were proud because we would be the first class which had spent all four years in the new school building and would be graduated from there. UI believe I liked the Sophomore year best of all, a third said, First we had a dance, the nicest we ever gave, I think. I was in AMiss Cherry Blossom' the operetta too, and we always had so much fun at rehearsals. You know, being in those operettas was good practice for our Iunior and Senior years. I first became interested in Dra- matics at that time. Our spring party was held in Nlay and remember what a crowd we had? The decorations were in pastel shades and we did work hard to make it a success! You forgot to mention the maga- zine sale, added one member. That was work, but it was lots of fun. We were divided into teams and did we workl The team that won was award- ed a box of Milky Ways. Worth working for, I thought! A tall boy stood up and exclaimed in his inimitable fashion. Ah yes, my dear classmates, but how can you call our Sophomore year our finest when you think of our Iunior year? Why, by that time we were old, wise and re- spected and no one could help but recognize the talent, the perseverance. the initiative, and the originality of our worthy group, when you think how quickly we got hold of the problem of rings. We took it by the horns, so to speak, and in no time the ring commit- tee had made its choice, put it before the class, voted and ordered our rings and when we flashed 'em on the school theylall applauded, A burst of laughter went forth at this flowery speech. X7 Yes we sure were in a hurry to get them. But just think, my dears, we will ever afterward be identified by them, reminded a quick witted girl. Then, very appropri- ately, we gave a Depression Dance, remember? Everyone came in old clothes and I think we charged ten cents a person or something like that. That was fun! What came nextaoh, yes,--the operetta 'ln Old Louisiana, -remember the beautiful stage setting? l'll never think of that operetta without recalling the applause of the audience when the curtains parted, revealing that beautiful Southern Colonial home. Many of us took part in that. lt was my favorite operetta. The two biggest events of our junior year, though, were the junior Show and the Prom, interposed another girl. How we slaved to put over that junior revue, 'About Townl' No one realized the work it contained. We wrote, directed and staged it all by our lonesomes-and it was good, too, if I do say so myself! Almost before the show was over we started planning the Prom, and oh, the trips we took to Harrisburg and all around the countryside for crepe paper, programs, favors, and a million and one other things. We decorated modernistically in silver and green, the Senior's colors. I spilled punch on my dress and stepped on it but I had a grand time, especially when I got in line twice and got two boxes of Martha Washington candy, fthe favors, you know.j Several others told of various events which had happened to them during the junior Show and the junior-Senior Prom, but all agreed that both were the most outstanding ones ever given. It seemed like no time before we became Seniors, didn't it? queried a boy on the outskirts of the circle. We felt rather lost being the oldest, and supposedly most dignified class in the High School. I think we carried it off well, though, all except the dignified part-- A laugh from the class never daunted him as he continued reminisc- ing, A'Not to be outdone by '33 our football team carried off the Conference Cup to keep our show windows well filled and then, not satisfied with that, they had to bring home the West Shore laurels in basketball. When was our Class Party? That was at Christmas time, don't you remember? answered the girl beside him. But I always speak of our party and our class play in the same breath, because about that time we picked 'Holiday for the annual Senior play. Miss Francis had a time pick- ing the cast,-she had so many from which to pick. To me, 'Holiday' is one of the brightest spots in our Senior year. It was a success financially, too. Not long after that 'The Outlaw King' was given. 'That operetta was very different from previous ones, also equally as good! No one can say we didn't have dramatic talent in our class! We were coming close to the end, then, and how I had to hustle to write our Term Report for History and Basehore Essay, and all the usual things that pile up at the end of the year such as book reports, etc. How did you enjoy the Prom, Winnie? HI thought it was grand. I enjoyed it so much. The gym looked so nice and they gave lovely favors. How anxiously and yet how sadly I looked forward to Class Day! And when it came it was over so quickly! The glorious day at Hershey and the banquet and everything-oh, it was like a dream! Well, we've come to the end now-and tonight with our Commencement Exer- cises we'll come to the parting of the ways. Let's hope that M. H. S. is as sorry to see us go as we are to leave. Slowly the group broke up to await the evening exercises. As each went his way he picked out the most outstanding event of his four years of High School and pondered over it a while. It was not without sighs and a few unwilling tears that for the last time they gathered in the auditorium as a class to hear the last words which were to send them forth into the world. Slowly, as the last word of the Commencement exercises died away they rose and each made a final tour of the familiar halls he had learned to love. M. H. S. looked sadly, yet gladly on, feeling that she had done a good job with this class of '34 and sighed inaudibly as the big triple doors closed on the last of the departing Seniors. Class Prophecy lt was a cold winter's night in December, 1954, and I was seated, half asleep. beside my radio reading in desultory fashion a collection of Martha Bowman's latest dog poems, just put out by Adams, Ritter and Crumlich publishing company. The radio ran on wildly in its own sweet fashion, as radios will, with the shifting scenes in one grand blur ftelevision is taken as a matter of course, you know, since its perfection by Prof. Gordon Gearhart, eminent scientist, and his brilliant assistant, Prof. Myersj. Suddenly, however I was fully roused by the voice of a new announcer. The words were familiar enough- And now the Peerless Anlogyro Co. take great . . . but that voice, where had I heard it? Suddenly I remembered, as visions of the high school I attended so many years ago, rose to my mind with its essembly programs in charge of Student Council President. Impatiently I adjusted the receiving apparatus!yes, it was Donald Failor, not changed greatly in appearance but risen from assembly chairman to one of the leading radio announcers of the time. And now I take great pleasure, ladies and gentlemen, in introducing the guest of honor at this banquet, Dr. Wilmer Faust, just back from his expedition into the wilds of Saturn. I gasped, as the orchestra struck up a triumphal march. But wasn't there some- thing familiar about that leader? It couldn't be-yes, it was, the old maestro himself, Lloyd Trimble. Among the members of this inter-nationally famous band I recognized the violinist as none other than Lester Derrick. But what was the announcer saying now? . , . and among this throng of celebrities may be seen Catharine Simpson, darling of movie fans the world overg the Honorable Leroy Pealer, judge of the Supreme Court, Mlle. Mildred Allen, who creates tomorrow's fashions today, and the noted physician, Dr, Weigle, who has just discovered vitamins x, y, and z. And look out. everyone, for we see that Ensminger, the columnist who hears all, sees all, and tells everybody is in our midst. Dr. Faust and his party are just entering the banquet hall. With him are his cameramen, Bair, Bahn, and Koser, who risked their lives climbing out to the very edge of Saturn to take pictures of jupiter and Neptuneg Wid- der, Bender, and Bushey, who were taken along to teach the fundamentals '22 of agriculture to the natives of Saturn and were so successful that we now get fresh fruits and vegetables every week X from that planet: Dorothy Porter, Mar- ian Wetzel, Mary Hertzler, and Helen Weigle, who took down in shorthand everything said and done on the trip so that it can be preserved for all time by the famous historians, Duncan and Pateef' just at this moment, to my great chagrin, my obliging radio began to sputter and crack violently, and for five minutes I worked with it futilely. At last it cleared once more and I saw that a , ' ooking man was just stepping away from the mike. ZX And that, ladies and gentlemen, was I. R. Richwine, candidate for President on the Scientific-Radicalists' ticket, who said a few words explaining why his party has no platform. But what have we here-the All- Universal Girls' Athletic team-Rupp, Louden, Hopple, Hoover, Hake, Guyer, Dinely, and Brunner, who have broken all records ever set. The sprint-king Cy Faust, is also at our partyg Iacoby, world's champion wrestler: Vogelsong, contender for the boxing title, and 'Pop' Ifrey, well- known football coach. The famous psychiatrist, Dr. Snelbaker, author of Are You Insane? can be seen dancing with Albert Stansfield, Mayor of the nation's commercial center, Shiremanstown, while Miss Isabel Williams who has helped so many of you through her Advice to the Lovelornu column, is chatting with Norman Hunter, author of What the Well-Dressed Man Should Wear and When. And folks, his necktie must be seen, to be appreciated. And now. if I am not mistaken, the banquet in honor of Dr. Faust and his party is being served. The banqueteers are to be entertained by Iohn Nester, basso-profundog Mlles. Levy and Dornbaugh, leading sopranos of the Super-Metropolitan Opera Co.: the famous adagio team of Fegan and McLaren: the leading contemporary pianist and composer, Rita Mosher: and Peggy Unger, tap dancer extraordinary. Your favorite blues singer--Claribel Crowl, Harold Shade, who has developed a new technique in crooning, and Grace Kistler, organist, may also be persuaded to help with the enter- taining. The toastmaster is the city's most successful business man, Mr. Mervin Weber, of the firm of Weber, Yohn, Yarlett, and Taylor. Speakers will be Milton Grouse, President of the Gouse, Rupp, and Smith Airlines, and Secretary of Agriculture, Martin, who has left the agricultural affairs of the nation in the capable hands of under- secretaries Breckbiel and Renard in order to be here. Mayor Rinehart will present the guest of honor with the keys to our fair city and . . . At this point my radio decided to get playful once more and, much to my disgust, I was forced to miss some of the broadcast. But perseverance won in the end and I was able to hear the conclusion of the program. And still they come, folks, so while the banquet is in progress let's take a look at some of the crowd arriving to hear Dr. Faust's address after the banquet. We're telling you, you don't often see such a gathering of celebrities. Most of the cast of '4After Dark , the new musical comedy by those well-known writers, Whitman and Stone, is present, including Helen Eckels and Winifred Drawbaugh who used to be mere models for bill-board advertisements, and the chorus composed of former stenographers and school-teachers, Dena Miceli, Ianet Goetz, Mary Elizabeth Rupp, Anna Seyler, Bernice Sweger, and Aletha Wells. all discovered by the producer and made famous over-night. We also see Miss Seifert, of the select Seifert, Brandt. and Renecker School for Girls. Not far away are Dorothy Cline, Iosephine Krone, Geraldine Sadler, and Louise Rhoades, popular air hostesses, and we notice that Elizabeth Frey, Marjorie Shaull, and Catharine Shettel, head nurses of New York's largest hospital, have managed to find time to attend our celebration. And now, ladies and gentlemen, our master of cere- monies is introducing the first speaker of the evening. Take it away, boys! At these words I snapped off the radio and sat back, filled with memories of high school days which the Big Broadcast had called back. And, as I thought over what I had heard, I came to the conclusion that our class of 1934 had indeed lived up to all expectations and had done well and gone far in the world. A three act comedy- Holiday tells the story of the Seton family, where money is their god. The two sisters. Linda and Iulia. are totally different. Iulia like her father, Edward Seton, a financier, loves money, luxury, pretense and unhappiness, Linda has a different viewpoint, she enjoys the simpler things in life. When Iulia brought home Iohnny Case a rising young lawyer, but with no fortune or social background, Linda realizes that here is a man with mutual thoughts and ideals. Edward Seton, and later, Iulia, cannot understand Iohnny's rather radical ideas about enjoying life when one is young, and working later if the need arises, At the New Year's Eve party, graced by the Seton Cram's two disagreeable cousins, and Nick and Susan Potter, Iohnny's ideal couple, Iohnny understands how unsuited Iulia and he are for each other. Iulia prefers the luxurious stability of her home, to the love and companionship of Iohnny. Immediately Iohnny leaves for England, Very soon afterwards Linda finds consolation in travel and perhaps in finding Iohnny. For the first time during dramatic production of M. H. S. there has been a change of stage set. The first and third scenes took place in the Seton drawing room, lavishly furnished with Grandfather Seton watching from above the mantel. ln the second scene Linda has her New Year's Eve party in the old nursery, her special room, with its atmosphere of childhood. WALTER ENSMINGER, WILMER FAUST, NORMAN HUNTER Bold Robin Hood and his loyal outlaw band made Sherwood Forest ring with their merry shouts and songs of glee. The same daring Robin led the boastful Sheriff of Nottingham on many a futile chase through the verdant forestg but the sheriff and his warrants only provoked a joke to the foresters as they carried out their scheme of taking from the rich and giving to the poor. Robin was just as romantic as he was bold. In his forest home and at the castle he risked his life to see his love, Lady Marian. By plans of Prince Iohn, Marian was to wed Sir Norman and when Robin was finally captured Marian consented to accept Sir Normans love if Robin were set free. During these events we found Marian's lady- in-waiting, Lady Dorothy in an infatuation with a Pilgrim, Sir Gilbert. But Richard returned from the Holy Land. Robin was freed and his title and rank of Earl of Huntingdon restored. His golden Some Day came at last and all of Lady Ma1'ian's dreams came true. The two opening games of the season with Central Y. M, C. A. and New Bloomfield proved to be rather easily won, neither team giving Mechanicsburg any trouble. In these games an untried line had trouble carrying out assignment, but gained enough ex- perience to season them for harder games to come. We came out on the long end by a score of 34-0 and 59-0 respectively. Steelton always a struggle. With an array of brilliant running backs and a green line functioning like veterans, Mechanicsburg ran over Steelton for three quartersg 15 first downs to 3 tells the story of Mechanicsburg's brilliance. But in the last quarter the superior weight of the Steelton team enabled them to put over three touchdowns in the last six minutes of play, to win 19-6. The Middletown game looked easy when Culp broke away in the first few minutes of play for a touchdown. After that Middletown came to life and it was anybody's game. Middletown threatened continually with a lateral pass but could not penetrate the goal line. Mechanicsburg scored again in the fourth quarter to win 13-0. Mechanicsburg caught a 'ATartar in Gettysburg, expecting to win this game easily, Mechanicsburg was caught flat footed and was far out-played by Gettysburg in the first half both in defense and offense. With 23 seconds to go Mechanicsburg scored on the brilliant timed pass, Bair to Klindinst for the score. Bair scored the extra point on a plunge to tie the score 7-7. The Shippensburg game decided who the best team in the conference really was. With Mechanicsburg carrying the fightirom the opening whistle Shippensburg had little time to do much damage. The first half ended with Mechanicsburg on the two- yard line. lt looked like a tie until Iacoby started skirting the ends, changing the score to 12-6 in our favor. The New Cumberland game proved to be an easy victory for Mechanics- burg. ln this game the reserve team got a chance to prove its worth. The main attraction of the game was numerous long runs. The game ended 20-0. The Chambersburg game was the coldest and one of the easiest of the season. After the varsity made a few touchdowns the reserves came pouring in, carrying on the work as well as the varsity. The game ended as Cham- bersburg scored. The final score was 31-7. At Waynesboro we were outscored but not outplayed. Fourteen first downs to three shows clearly how Mechanicsburg functioned but penalties to the tune of 130 yards, especially on long runs took the sap out of Mechanics- burg. The game ended 6-1-1 after Waynesboro had recovered a block kick for a score, and a 30' yard run scored again for Waynesboro. Carlisle was the game 13 seniors were looking froward to. Carlisle made things look bad by scoring in the opening minutes on a recovered fumble and a brilliant lateral pass. But when Mechanicsburg got hold of the ball there was no question of the better team. After that Mechanicsburg scored at will both on runs and passes. Carlisle for the first time had caused their rival no trouble. The staggering score was 33-6. This game ended football history for 1933. Front row-Culp, Stahl, lacoby, Trimble, Crumlich. Back row-Vogelsong. Fish, Faust, Stough, Failor, Mower. Boys, Basket Ball This year Mechanicsburg entered the Southern Pennsylvania Conference in basket- ball and did as well as could be expected. In the West Shore League, a league in their class, Meehanicsburg ended in Hrst place. To attain this position, Mehaniesburg won ten out of twelve games. I The Closest game of the season was with Shippensburg. After two extra periods the score ended 28-28, The high scorer of the team was Captain Iacoby who proved to be an able leader. The other three seniors, Crumlieh, Failor, and Faust did their part in making the season a success. Although four Valuable men will be lost through graduation, there are four capable veterans and a promising reserve team to build a team for next season. HOME l-lanover Enola . . Newville .
