M. A. H. S X , J,.,- . ' I. 1' 1 x 1 . MR. LANGE A ZVVOH' A ITIZENS of Mechanic Arts are particularly proud of their president, Mr. Dietrich Lange, nationally known naturalist, author, and educator. ln his leisure time Mr. Lange may be found hiking, canoeing, and studying birds, trees, flowers, geology, or physical geography. Hunting he does with a camera. Suddenly his straight, wiry frame stan-ds erect, his deep-set piercing eyes have discovered something. Out comes his camera to record his findings, an unusual bird nest, an out-of-season flower, an odd arrangement of stones, a stately moose looming up silently between fir branches. Mr. Lange's first book, The Hand Book of Nature, was published in l898. To supply the boys of his own school with books which would be profitable as well as interesting reading, Mr. Lange next wrote a series of adventure and ln- dian stories. Before coming to Mechanic Arts, Mr. Lange served as principal of Hum- boldt High School, St. Paul, and as superintendent of the St. Paul schools. Mechanics would be a strange place without the brisk step, the snowy head, and the admonishing hand of its chief executive. lts citizens see him strid- ing up and down the halls, chatting, directing, advising. And many a returning graduate has been heartened to have Mr. Lange greet him by his first name. Truly he practices what he preachesw Be human before you're a teacher! E. Hillard. He receives all complaints calmly, does what he can do, and forgets what he can't do. He has complete charge of the complicated process of program making from the first charting of a new semester's curriculum to the final adjusting of over-crowded class rooms and red-eyed girls who just can't get along with that teacher . Calmly he serves eighth period sentences to tight-lipped stu- dents who have dared to interrupt the reverie of bookworms. He is at various times executive, law-maker, judge, but most importantehe is at all times a friend of Mechanics. Billy, books and flowers are his hobbies. Billy and he are the best of pals with common interests and no wondereBilly is his son, seven years old, popping with questions. ls this the reason his father must keep his wits sharpened? Mr. Hillard's unsated craving tor books is manifested in his constant reading of the latest books as well as old masterpieces he has not yet read. He reads to his son for his own as well as for his son's enjoyment. He is the proud owner of a very beautiful garden, having hoed, dug, planted, watered, and watched with interest the progress of his handiwork himself. MR. HILLARD Page 19
