Senior debate team: Ken Ralph CABOVEI, Lane Savitch IBELOWJ, and Betty Bandli KBELOW RIGHTJ. DEB TERS IN Starting in November, the Meadowdale debate team, under the supervision of Mr. Mike Ayers, at- tended a series of tournaments, beginning with a two-day meet at Western Washington State College in Bellingham. Two Meadowdale teams went into action-a senior team with Ken Ralph laffirmative and negativel, Lane Savitch Caffirmative, both pic- tured at rightl, and Betty Bandli Cnegativel junior team members: Beth Hailey and Randy Barnard Cnegativel, and julie McDonald and Eileen Havens Caffirmativel. The controversy was over the draft. Besides debate, there were other events at the Bel- lingham tournament. Sylvan Palmer, Randy Barnard and Eileen Havens competed in impromptu-a 6- minute speech with no preparation, and perhaps the toughest of the individual events. Bruce Ramsey and Lane Savitch each memorized a ten-minute oratory word for word-creating an eye-opening presenta- tion of polish and emotional appeal. Ken Ralph, Warner Miller, julie McDonald and Beth Hailey prepared oral interpretation, a dramatic reading of selections from literature. Warner Miller competed in an entirely new category, original poetry, which perhaps calls for more creativity than any other event. The Meadowdale team won valuable experi- ence, if only one trophy-a finalist trophy in oratory that went to Lane Savitch. , 146
