With only two letter men reporting, prospects tor a winning basketball team were dim at the opening of the 1943-44 season. Hopes were further darkened by the loss of Bill Osborn for half of the season due to an ankle injury, and the loss of Novotny, the other veteran, to the Navy in January. With a squad consisting of one senior, one junior, one sophomore and four freshmen plus one letter-man; Meadow Grove was represented by a team that, although on the short end of the score, never gave up and showed continued improvement throughout the season. High spot of the season was tho game with Neligh in the Cornbelt tournament where the underdog. Meadow Grove, lost to the seeded Neligh five in a fast and exciting g me considered by many the best of the round. In recounting the season, special mention should be made of the play of Bill Osborn, high point man of the squad, whose play in the Corn-belt tournament made him unanimous choice of the coaches for the honor team. Prospects for a winning team in the years to come are very bright, with the return of six of this year’s lettermen: Jimmy Ferry, Darrel Schurman, Elwood Schinck, Dean McClatchey, freshmen; Don Ballard, sophomore and Dick Rodekohr, junior.
