This year our cover features Sacred Wind”. «1 sculpture by 1967 alumni Terry Cilbreth. The TOTEM STAR-' expresses its sincere appreciation for Mr. Cilbreth s work and dedication. Sacred Wind: Guiding our Way Prairie winds lift the wings of the hawk and the love of our brothers. Lift our spirits to soar with the Hawk. 2 l« nu t umn Tradition Many times we wonder, how much is a tradition worth? Does it only have meaning to a past long gone? But as Homecoming approaches, we feel like we are a tradition ourselves, like we are making the traditions. As the sun comes down and the tipis are erected, a sense of belonging and of great pride is felt. We begin to think that we are a part of something that started a long time ago. Those that come after us will be part of ourselves tomorrow. McMurry's tradi- tions will be with us for the rest of lives, not only as a memory, but as part of the education and knowledge that never ends — like traditions. 4 — Homecoming 0UM1 URRy fTTTTT « iik m Homecoming — 5 Homecoming Spirit Mt Murry kepi up with ils lr.ulilion.il Homecoming Spinl «is the freshmen again r,in the show. For some, it's off to school to begin graduate work, and for others, careers in the real world” will soon start, but for all, it's the beginning of a new era of their lives. 195 graduates heard from commencement speaker Dr. John C. Stevens, who told them that 1988 is a great time to live. Cadet Allen Guy Brannan was com- misioned during an Army ROTC Commissioning Cere- mony. and honorary degrees were conferred upon Mr. Wiliam W. Davis and Mrs. Dian Graves Owen, both of whom have been involved with McMurry College for sev- eral years. In the fall this year. Dr. Philip Fenn spoke, and in the spring, known educator Dr. Ernest Boyer was the guest lecturer. The Chanters sing at the morning lectures, the Band performs at the evening lectures, and both events count as College Series credits for all students. These chances begin with Women's Interclub's Rush Tea, then Coke Parties given by each club in the spring. The Rush Parties follow. All of these give the ladies the opportunity to meet the members of each club so that they can decide which club is best for them. Preference cards and bids are signed, and the women are swept into the fun, and many times busy, world of pledging. Spring Presentation ft ft- N. ■ |vV'. Editor Leslie Kinlen Staff Writers Roy Lyn Dennis Tommy Kidwell Vick Maldonado Brent Ostos Russell Robinson Andrea Rose Photographers Kevin Bearden Damon Sypcrt Advisors Gary Ellison Loretta Fulton Despite having a small staff, the WAR WHOOP kept up its tradition of excellence again this year. Under the leadership of Loretta Fulton, the staff turned out a quality newpaper bi-weekly, except, of course, during school holidays, Dead Week, and final exams. Students and faculty alike submitted articles and letters to the editor to be published within its pages. Staff members had to keep on top of things to know when things were happening and where, and to keep their eyes and ears open for anything that might interest their readers. WAR WHOOP — 159 1987-88 TOTEM: used his sculpture Sacred Wind as the emphasis of our cover and as our theme. We also opened the book with Homecoming, as we have done for the past several years. After a year of hard work, a book was finally finished. Things were tense when deadlines rolled around, and there were times when we thought we'd never make it. Head- lines and captions didn't always come easy, and copy seemed even more dif- ficult at times. Pictures were some- times hard to find. Creativity eluded us after days of working on page after page after page, sometimes late into the night and on weekends. Even- tually, though, everything fell into place. The copy and headlines were finished and in the computer, the pic- tures were cropped and captioned, the layouts done. Now we can finally tell you all of our secrets. Our cover and Dedicatee Patrick Bennett are now published for all the world to see. Hopefully, we've captured all the moments you remem- ber from this year and have put them down in writing as well as in pictures for you to look back upon in the years to come. The TOTEM Staff now presents to you the 1987-88 TOTEM, Sacred Wind”, with the wish that we've suc- cessfully summarized this year on campus for you. It's your book now and we hope you enjoy it!. Kevin Bearden look through picture Shan Rote volunteered her help wherever it watt needed. The TOTEM went through a lot of changes this year. Cary Ellison greet- ed us as our only advisor (last year we had 3) and our office was moved to Radford, but the biggest change of all was our departure from our former publisher of 17 years in order to change to Taylor Publishing Compa- ny, a Dallas-based publisher. With the help of our new publishing represen- tative |erry Clark, we did all of the word processing and indexing on a computer system from the publisher, all of which had previously been done by hand. We did keep some of our traditions, however. Once again, our cover was designed by someone from McMurry. Here H where pffind out who you really are; you learn to love and treasure those lingers of yesterday who become friends for life, and most of all at time flies. It has been my greatest pleasure to captivate time and jeze it forever in this yearbook. The memories that the TOTEM Staff have captured in this book will be with us foreecrfrozen in time, because time does fly. Nora E.
