Add hard work to this desire and the result is usually a successful season. The 1985 McMurry Braves were certainly not lacking in either of these two areas. They were young and enthusiastic lacking only in exper- ience. It was this lack of experience which hindered the McMurry football team. But enthusiasm and hard work led to an Indian victory over Sul Ross to close the season with a record of I- 9. If desire, enthusiasm, and hard work are indicators of how the 1986 season will turn out. then look out for the Braves. FOOTBALL Braves: Young And Enthusiastic Pictured above Paul Rrizmdine. Jerry Richardton The true value of the sport is ultimately measured by what was learned rather than what was won.” — Bill Elias, Jr. MCMURRY VOLLEYBALL Improved And Unified Me Murry's volleyball team did exceptionally well in 1985. tieing for second in the conference race. These women showed improvement and unity throughout the season, yet lacked in experience. The season ended with a record of 9-14. a win over Tarleton was the biggest thrill of their season. jonya Brooks was named 1st Team All Conference and Freshman of The Year. They also had three team members named to the Academic All Conference list. r i 198 INDIAN BASKETBALL Continous Improvement The 1985-86 Indian basketball squad preformed ex- ceptionally well. Their overall record was 15-16. They showed continous improvement throughout the sea- son. with strong leadership coming from seniors Butch Bearden. Jeff Johnson, and Doug Gordon. Each member of the team played a vital note and made his own contribution in the team's success. The Indians went to the semifinals in the district eight tournament. X LADY INDIANS Tom Landry once said. A vital team characteristic is the ability to overcome adversity. Any team acquires experience and endurance as it learns to fight back. This in turn builds the kind of character, which seldom crumbles at a time of crisis or testing. The McMurry women were young and inexperi- enced. They went through much adversity, but grew stronger because of it. Next year will continue to be a growing and learning experience for the Lady Indians, but they are on their way up to the top. MEN TRACKSTERS It was an upsetting season for this years men's track team. They were working for the TIAA title for the 3rd year in a row. But with circumstances beyond Coach Shackelford's control Tarlton snuck by with the title. Due to unpredicted injuries and other problems McMurry fell behind Tarlton II points in the conference meet. We still knowi and Tarlton does too. that McMurry still has the best Men's track team in this conference. XM Sports 1 LADY TRACKSTERS The lady tracksters pul up a fight again this year at the conference track meet, but «till found themselves short a few people and points of Tarleton. Strong performances in the running events helped them place a strong second behind Tarleton. The lady Indians track team left no doubt that they will be a team to contend with in the future and maybe even a threat to long running conference title holder. Tarleton. 206 Sport McMURRY TENNIS TEAMS McMurry was represented very well this year by a fine group of men and women tennis players. The men's team made an excellent showing again by repeating their title as Conference Champions plus qualifying five for the All- Conference team. The women's team, however did not fare so well. They only qualified one for the All-Conference team and placed third in the Conference Tournament. The women are showing continuous im- provement. Sport 309 McMURRY GOLF TEAM Bob Hope once said. If you watch a game. It’s fun. If you play it. it’ recreation. If you work at it. it’s golf”. The McMurry golf team knows that this is true. After a devastating season last year they came back strong this year to take the title of conference champs. As a result of their victory they brought home not only the trophy, but also Coach Oldenwald with a very short haircut, fulfilling his promise to the team. This team shows a lot of promise for the years ahead. They represented McMurry well and will continue to do so in the future. X 7 Sport 3W 1985-86 ATHLETIC AWARDS BANQUET On May 2nd. 1986. after the cheerleader put in weeks of hard work and planning, the athletes of McMurry College came together To celebrate ... be recognized .. say good-bye And join hands in our alma mater. 1985-86 INTRAMURALS The Intramural program at MeMurry College allows the students to get involved and to participate in friendly competition. And competitive it was! The games ranged from football, basketball, volleyball, and softball to ping pong, horseshoes, badminton, and pickleball. The competition was thick with all the social clubs entering at least one or two if not all the events. The number of independent teams was high this year and the GBUTS. Cole Slaw Bangers. Pink Indimidaters. Romeos. Scuff Pups. Gumbies. and even the Over The Hill Gang proved to be tough in the Intramural Battles. A few disagreements, a little practice, intense concentration, some friendly smiles, a lot of laughter, a bunch of fun, and friendships shared is what Intramurals is all about.
