That person could be none other than the Bookstore’s own textbook manager. Mr Gene Patty Since coming to the Reservation in 1965. Patty has been spreading good times and cheer all over the campus. But there's more to the man than just textbooks! Did you know that Gene Patty is a former McMurry stu- dent. class president and member of KIVA social club? And. not only was he a photographer for the TOTEM and WAR WHOOP, but Gene Patty helped produce a prize-winning film for the international film festival in Switzerland How about that? Patty spent 21 years in the Coast Guard before retir- ing as a Chief Journalist Gene Patty then began his work at McMurry as Sports Information Director in 1965 But. a man with so many talents can't stay in one place too long. Patty later became a McMurry admis- sions counselor and the director of the media center, before taking his present position in the Bookstore. When he's not marking the prices in textbooks. Patty is at home working with his two favorite hobbies: photography and models (the kind you build, not take pictures of!) The Westover, Texas native has had photographs and articles published in several national hobby magazines. So. for all the fun that Gene Patty and his banana trick have created on the McMurry campus, we hon- orably dedicate the 1979 TOTEM to one of McMurry's greatest friends. The Confusion Of Can registration be fun??? Surely not' What's so fun about standing in line for hours, filling out hundreds of forms all with the same information, and paying money TO the business office??? But it can be fun After all. registra- tion is the first complete gathering of everyone back from summer vaca- tion. And. isn't it fun to look like a fool in front of a Polaroid camera as your official student ID is made? And. admit it. it is really fun to walk back through the crowd, going back to Station Three to get your housing card. All it takes to have fun with registra- tion is to uh well uh well, maybe it is better to register late. Registration can even be fun for work- ers like Carrie Wjddington jnd Donna lean Anderson who get to register ear- ly (above) Standing in line is all part of the game as the religion professors hunt for the correct computer cards, (left) Rocky Cosart hopes he’s at the right table to sign up for Aerobic dance he's not? 16 Activities Slimes ' Bckah James and Belinda Sladck want to be involved with all the Home- coming fun. including the “painting of the braves. One thing about McMurry: EV- ERYBODY gets to participate in the fun!!! So. while all the first-year Indians are learning the combina- tions to their mailboxes and the tech- niques of making beds, they also get to participate in Sliming. The only official uniform of a Slime is the Slime beaney which includes all the pertinent information about the new student. Besides avoiding the cam- puses grass areas, the Slime get plen- ty of spelling exercise with the var- ious “buttoning techniques. Slime aren’t people to stay in the background cither. The highly tal- ented Slime Drum Corps made pub- lic appearances at every home foot- ball game. Until the Slime Olympics. McMurry upperclassmen have a form of low life to boss around cam- pus. But. it isn't long until everyone is a member of the wild’n’crazy McMurry student body!!! Sliming: “Fun” for Freshmen? Activities -• 17 Pi Phi - H.E.I. But. apparently the non-alcohol and non- smoke atmosphere of-MeMurry’s Social Hall attracts the 250 weekly customers. Furnished and operated by the MeMurry Student Government, the facility is a weekly gathering place for MeMurry students and many other (often very interesting ) visitors The Social Hall enjoyed it's last year in it’s Radford location. But. with Sliming, the end is just as fun as the rest of it. On one wonderful Saturday in October, the Cheer- leaders staged the official 1978 Slime Olympics. The freshmen and anyone else who happened to show up participated in a variety of athletic events” climaxed by the muddy Tug-A-War. It was a tough battle with the losers ending up covered with mud (The winners didn’t exactly stay clean!) f reshmen do the darnedest things, don't they'’ What's the fun of losing a tug-awar if you can't waller a little in the mud ’ Two freshwomen anticipate the ending of the Slime Olympics (That's when they aren't Slime anymore ) Fun In The Mud!! The Caf. therefore, is a daily center of fun and fellowship. Whether its chicken-fried jello or noodle surpise on the menu, there’s never any shortage of conversation and good times. Its a place to sit with your friends and on the other table from your enemies. The caf is a place to stock up on bread and cola, as well as find out the latest news from your best bud- dies. The caf is not necessarily a place to cat. (In fact, sometimes that’s the best option!) Iris Graham is a place to gather and gab. But. an occasional roll or orange drink doesn't hurt!
