Errors, injuries and inexperience told the tale for the Tribe as they weathered that plague that is euphemistically known as a rebuilding year.” After an impressive opening-game win against Tarleton State, the Indians were bushwhacked eight straight times. Winning a game appeared to be the Redskins’ own form of Mission Impossible as they would consistently self-destruct” at crucial times in the game. But in the final game of the season, the Maroons gave the miscucs a holiday and closed the campaign on the upswing by topping old rival Howard Payne. 75 76 Although the season itself was disappointing, the perform- ances of individual team members provided Indians’ fans with a bumper crop of thrills. Senior quarterback Richard Puckett concluded his collegiate career by coming within five yards of establishing a new school record for single season passing yardage. Matt Chalmers came to McMurry as a passer, but last sea- son he switched to the receiving end of the game, and the junior from Gainesville quickly established as one of the best wide receivers in the Lone Star Conference. Chalmers simply eradicated all previous McMurry records for pass catching as he snared 53 tosses for a total of 777 yards. 77 Junior tailback Archie Smith came on strong in the latter portion of the season to rank as the best Indian runner in over a decade. Smith gained 890 yards on 216 carries for a 4.1 aver- age. Fullback Chuck Anderson made his mark in McM annals when he ripped off a 91 yard burst from scrimmage against Stephen F. Aus- tin. That jaunt gave the burly fullback posses- sion of the record for longest run from scrim- mage by a McMurry player. 1969 was the year that McMurry netted its first season statistical leader in LSC competition. John David Williams, sophomore kicking spe- cialist, led the league in punting with a 44.6 yard average. That was sufficient to earn the Leverett’s Chapel boomer the number wo spot in the nation. 78 79 As a result of their performances during the season, three players received special recognition. Freeman Lamkin, the Methodists’ giant offensive tackle, was named second team All-Lone Star Conference, while offensive guard Bill Doane and defensive cornerback Van Grady were first team selec- tions on the All-Texas College Team compiled by the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. Seven players donned the Maroon and White for the final times this year, and their departure will leave sizeable gaps in the Indian fortunes. Puckett, Doane, Jerry Andrus, Sandy Staley, Steve Bowman, Willie Davis, and Robert Rivera concluded their eligibility and passed their war bonnets on to fledgling warriors. For all of the things that the 1969 McMurry football sea- son displayed, it proved conclusively all of the cliches about the gridiron sport. Truly, football is a game of inches. It is a game of breaks. And it is a game of hurts. If the Tribe's younger members and its new initiates are equal to the challenge, the football clouds on the McMurry horizon could be bright ones indeed. 80 Fighting Indians Bottom rote: Nick Wells. The latter showing was good for a fourth place loop finish. The most potent gun in the Tribe offense be- longed to Randall Caussey, senior guard from Sweetwater who climaxed his college career with a brilliant season and a hatful of honors. The slender bomber carved his name into the school record books in two departments. Caussey canned 33 points in his final outing against Tarleton State to become the leading single season scorer in McMurry annals. 84 ACC and McMurry battle it out under the basket. A HPC Yellowjackct stretches for the ball as Nelson shoots. 85 A real scramble for the ball takes place at the Angelo State game. Caussey's total of 588 bettered the old mark of 583 held by Preston Vice. He also surpassed Vice by constructing a 23.5 point per game average, a total that upped the old standard by more than a point. Caussey's efforts were rewarded when he was named first team all-Confcrence and first team all- NAIA Region IV. Three other seniors completed their eligibility for the Warriors this season. Charles Tabb, sidelined at the opening of the season with a glandular in- fection, came on strong after missing the first six games of the season. By the end of the campaign, Tabb was dazzling spectators and intimidating op- ponents in his accustomed fashion. Joe Bob Brewster grabs a basket. Johnny Ray Watson soars above Angelo player. Immediately upon the conclusion of the basketball sea- son, Tabb signed a pro football contract with the Cleve- land Browns, who feel that the McMurry muscleman has a potentially bright future with them in the Amer- ican Conference of the National Football League. Willie Nelson, a four-year starter, capped his term in a Maroon uniform with his best scoring season. Every- one knew that Willie could play airtight defense, and this year he supplemented that characteristic by un- loading soft, arching jump shots in his inimitable style. Nelson reached a personal point high twice this year when he bucketed 29 points. Cain looks for a sure pass receiver. 88 David Cain, four-year Tribe lerterman, was a valuable sixth man for the War Party. Cain, a senior center from Pampa, helped bail the Redmen out of several tight situations. Some future Indian stars made their marks this year, and their efforts give McM followers bright hopes for the future. Sophomore Johnny Ray Watson, 6'6 thin- man from Lorenzo, led the Indians in rebounding in his first season as a starter. 90 Watson also displayed a fluid outside shot that won the praise of visiting professional scouts. Charlie Tabb leap for a basket. Willie Nelson eyes two points against HSU. Sophomore Mark Johnigan became eligible at se- mester and immediately assumed a starting berth. Johnigan showed promise of adding much needed strength on the boards for the Tribe. Robert Hick- man saw spot duty as a starter during the early season and was a valuable replacement during the latter stages of the year. Junior dynamo Edward (Deda) Jones thrilled Mc- Murry fans with his racehorse defensive play and his long-range accuracy from the field. Coach Hershel Kimbrell will be looking for these boys and other team members to fill the empty sneakers left behind by Caussey, Tabb, Nelson and Cain. The youngster from Wylie is already recognized as one of the premier pole vaulters in the state. Last season, Parris finished second in the NAIA national meet, and just to prove that his showing was no fluke, Rickey began this season with a bang by win- ning the college division of the Astrodome Indoor Meet with a vault of 16 feet even. That mark stands as the best ever by a Lone Star Conference athlete. One of the leaders of the McMurry track squad is junior Larry Lefcvre. Beset by leg problems last year, the Sag- erton sprinter gave evidence early in the season that he was ready for his best year ever in an Indian uniform. Lefevre established a new school record in the 440 yard dash by ripping off a 47.8 clocking indoors at the Astro- dome. Mike Hughes Robert Bradley, sophomore sprinter from Munday, is a man of many talents. In addition to running the quar- ter, Bradley anchors the sprint and mile relays. Other mainstays of the Tribe outfit are sprinters Leon Riggins, Mike Hughes, Darrell Selke, Jerry Await and Doug Robinson, and high jumper Lynn Caton. And since there’s not a senior in the bunch, things can only get better for McM track. 96 Track Schedule Jan. 23-24 NA1A Indoor Championships Kansas City, Mo. Unique and a source of pride to Method- ism is the ability of the band to present a complete Worship Through Music” service in the churches. The 1969-70 Indian Band was led by Eddie Harrison.
