Or maybe you have thought about being the lead guitarist for a local club band. Maybe this is a dream of your ' s. If so, then maybe you should meet Mike Newby. Newby is currently a senior at McKinney High School. Yet, there is more to Newby than just being your everyday high school student. You see, Nev by is a talented guitarist. Of course, it should come as no surprise for two reasons. One, is that he has been playing for about ten years. The second is because his father plays and some of the tricks have worn off on him. As of right now, Newby does not work. He spends most of his time working on his favorite hobby, which is, of course, playing and improving his guitar skills. When asked what his plans for the future are, he will tell you that he plans to further his education and eventually become a professional musician. It seems that he has a good start on becoming a professional musician since he has already played in five bands. The band that has seemed to receive the most attention is Domain. Newby and his drummer, Mary Edlin, formed Domain around the end of 1986 and early 1987 and it has had growing success ever since. Now maybe you are asking yourself, What does he do when he ' s not playing guitar? According to Newby he enjoys listening to his favorite band, Metallica. Newby also enjoys watching Faces of Death. Newby also enjoys art, which is his favorite school subject. So maybe the future is going to be bright for this seventeen year old guitarist as he continues to progress in his search for a career in music. Imperial Boogie Masters Entertain Fans You may have seen three guys walking around school in red and white striped Co sweatshirts. Or maybe you have heard these same guys doing their stuff. Or you mig have seen these guys at a pep rally, a dance, or at a Dallas teen club. These guys are the i and coming rappers of the new rock age — The Imperial Boogie Masters. The Imperial Boogie Masters is a group consisting of Larry Young, Daniel Boyd ai Brodrick Johnson. They have been rapping together for three years. Young has bei rapping since he was seven, Boyd since he was nine, ajid Johnson since he was nine. They have performed in teen clubs all over the Dallas area. They have also performi in Oak Cliff, Richardson, Garland, Piano, McKinney, Frisco, and Farmersville. Th have also held shows on the McK-inney Square, won several talent shows, performed the McKinney High School dances, and at several pep rallies, including Homecomir They have been featured on radio stations such as 90.9 F.M. They said that most of their friends are not jealous of them, but they believe that the are some positive and some negative people in every crowd. Their parents are all for tl career that they have chosen to seek and wish them luck and success in what ever th ' try. Young, Boyd and Johnson practice at least ten hours a week, practicing two hou every day after school. Two hours of using your mouth constantly can be tirii sometimes, but we stick to it, said Young. And they must stick to it. Your body, n only your mouth, must be in good physical shape in order to rap. Every week they crea a new set of dance steps to go along with their raps. All of this practice has paid off, because in October, they were asked to make recording at a local recording studio. This was a big step up from just being small tin operators. They were very excited about the change of pace and they felt that thi deserved it. The road has not always been paved with success and fortune. There are a lot of I downs but you have to keep going, said Young. There ' s a lot more than meets the ey It takes a lot of hard work and it ' s a long struggle, but you know, that one day, you make it to the top. Behind the stage at their performances, they feel a rush of anticipation and excitemer Once we get out on the stage, we get used to it, and don ' t even realize the audience iso there. You just get out there and have some fun, said Boyd. They plan to kei performing locally until they make a record. Once the record breaks they have hopes concerts, a world tour, videos, and then possibly movies. In other words, a long recordii career is ahead of them. The Imperial Boogie Masters could have a future in the music game. To further tl career they already have, they must perform with readiness, concentration, and a litt bit of luck. As Boyd said, Bless the mic for the gods. mL - wmiB ' i liiiiSp ' ——-- ------------ ' 1 II amec MU i ' pe tcuCUe pcut 5 w 4CC _ 5 roniiny Winburn, Ross Cium ocn faces. Happenings 4. Mini Mag District Realignment Moves Mc Kinney to District 9- AAA A tLvtry two years the U.I.L. realigns districts across the state according to the student pop- ulation each day. This year there were major changes occurring in District 5-AAAA. Beginning this fall, McK- inney will be listed under District 9-AAAA with Allen, Highland Park, which dropped from 5-A ranking, Rockwall, Dennison, and the Colony. Coach Ron Poe feels the Lions will face some of the toughest in the state. The realignment of District 5-AAAA was made in order to eliminate the east and west zones. Due to the elimination of zones, the district champion will be named on the tenth game of the season instead of the eleventh as in the past. k.ifir VJ x. ' vK- ' . STUDENTS GAIN LAW EXPERIENCE IN MOCK TRIAL COMPETITIONS The Mock Trial Club was designed to give students an inside look at law. It also gives them an understanding of legal issi and the judicial process. Jennifer Raulston reported in the December issue of Mane Events that although the mock tri sound like a lot of hard work, there is also fun involved. Jim Pritchard, club sponsor, led the group in competition held in McKinney at the Collin County Courthouse in Februa Each School is given the same case study and was required to prepare a presentation to the plaintiff or defendant. Scholarsh were awarded to members of the winning team, regardless of age, to be set aside and used at the college of their choice. Mock Trial participants from MHS included: Michelle Carrasco, Ann Gaiban, Juanita Ramirez, April Smith, Daniel Stews Jennifer Stewart, Camille Swift, Christina Villanueva, and Billy Vita. The team was coached by Mr. Pritchard, chairman of 1 Social Studies Department at MHS, and Mr. Joe Luce, advising attorney. The 1 987-88 Mock Trial Team had an exciting year. It was the first year M.H.S. has had a mock trial team. Teams across 1 state of Texas are given the same case to prepare. Each team must have two student lawyers and at least two witnesses. T lawyers this year were: senior — Jennifer Stewart and freshman — Michelle Carrasco. The witnesses were: senior — Billy V and freshman — Daniel Stewart. Christina Villenauva was alternate and had to prepare for lawyer and witness. The team h to prepare for both plaintiff and defendant. Each team found out five minutes before the competition, which side they m argue. The M.H.S. team advanced to the quarter-finals before getting knocked out of the competition. National Honor Society visits Mary The McKinney High School Chapter of the Natf Society is an extension of the original charter e through Boyd High School in August of 1952. The 1 Honor Society ranks as one of the oldest and most prei national organizations for high school students. The McKinney chapter is a service organization with the intent of bettering both our school and our community. This year ' s service project involved peer tutoring assistance for high school students who are either failing a subject or wish help. Peer ' tutoring gives the honor student a chance to share his knowledge with his fellow st udents, and thus gives the teacher a better opportunity to work individually with failing students. The Honor Society attended two enrichment field trips this year. The first trip, on December 8, to The Science Place in Fair Park to see In Search of the Mary Rose: Henry VII ' s Lost Warship exhibited and to view other museum exhibits in the Fair Park area. In April, a field trip was planned to the Fort Worth museums and the Omni Theater. In order to pay for these field trip, presentation pins, and graduation pendants, National Honor Society members conduct a fund raiser during the week of homecoming, October 25-31. October 3, 1987, the Royal Pride Drum Line won its third consecutive Outstanding Drum Line award at the P E S H. Invitational Marching Competition, setting a precedent that may be titled a tradition. The drum line, a unit ot the Royal Pride Marching Ensemble, is under the direction ot Paul Stephens. , , . . n In the fall of 1985. when the drum line, under Captain Ronny Harris, first won the trophy, they had little idea as to the affect it would have the future efforts put forth by members ot the line. In 1986, under Captain Tim Gerron, the drum line im- mediately took the attitude needed for a second victory. Need- I less to say, the hard work paid off and the title remained in I McKinney. Also in the fall of 1986, the Royal Pride Drum Line I competed at the North Texas Drum Line Competition. Although I - they did not place in the top three or win any individual awards, their outcome was personally pleasing. Since September of 1987. the practice hours of the Royal Pride Drum Line doubled those of the previous two seasons. Working under Captain Bart Spraberry and Assistant Captain Curt Smith, the drum line won the P.E.S.H. competition once more. As this particular contest has become more popular, the competition has grown tighter. This year the drum line competed against some of the area ' s top 4AAA ' A lines such as Denison, Rockwall, and The Colony. Nevertheless, the Royal Pride Drum Line has become more complex, more technical, and, above all, more musical. The majority of the material which the line performs is orig- inal. The dire ' ctors and students account the wide variety of musical possibilities and select tunes to perform. The arrange- i ments are then written by Drum Major Karl Schindler and I director Paul Stephens. This process assures the line of having | unique stvle and repertoire. Through the course of the past few years the drum line has grown in size and dedication. This year the line boasts eighteen members, the largest m McKinney ' s history. Among these students are three seniors, four juniors, five soph- omores, and six freshmen. All have worked equally hard, and all should be given equal credit for the success so far this year. , xt .u t- On November 21, 1987, the Royal Pride Drum Line competed at the North Texas Drum Line Competition. The McKinney marquettes have evolved from a drill team in the 1960 ' s to a dance team in the 1980 ' s. The Marquettes began their year in the summer. Practicing long hours prepared the dance team for camp. During camp, they participated in five days of learning jazz dance routines. The final day of camp was for team evaluation. Of approximately 46 teams attending camp, the Marquettes were one of six to earn the title of Grand Champion. The beginning of the school year was the most strenuous for the squad. The Marquettes performed at each football game, and enjoyed participating in the half-time acfivities. After football season, the team practiced for a long time for their Spring Show. Appealing dance forms, such as tap, jazz, ballet, folk and modern styles were included in their routines. Also performing in the show were the Harmony Singers and the MHS Stage Band. The Marquettes ended their year with a grand banquet. New Marquettes were inducted into the team, and others were honored with various awards. The awards were a reminder to the team members of the important aspects of being a Marquette, and the unique experiences each person shared. Lastmg friendships were formed. The qualities of discipline and responsibility were instilled in all members by their willingness to work hard, practice, learn, improve their abilities, and have fun. This is one of the many things you might have heard Holly Holland yell this year. Freshman cheerleader Holly Holland has been leading crowds on with cheers of victory, not only in high school, but also in the junior high for two years and in the Tiger League for four years. Born in McKinney on the second of August, 1 973 to Barbara and Dickie Holland, Holly has been successful both in her cheerleading and her studies. Holly ' s hobbies include cheer- leading, dancing, swimming, and talking on the phone. When asked how she feels about cheerleading. Holly replied, Cheerleading has been one of the most exciting parts of my life. It gives one a chance to support our teams and school. It ' s a wonderful way to meet new people and make new friends. It ' s a lot of hard work, but the fun outweighs everything else. What are Holly ' s plans for the future? I plan to go to college, but I haven ' t decided which one yet. Wherever she winds up going, Holly will probably continue to hold on to the true school spirit she so proudly holds now. The freshman cheerleaders had to make an adjustment for the 1987-88 year. They went from having eight members on their squad for two years in junior high, to having only six squad members a§ a freshman squad. They made the ad- justment with ease, and have turned into one of the best freshman squads ever! _ — Robin Youngblood r ' Cheerleaders. FBC Youth go to Hawaii foi On July 7th, 1987, a group of fifty-six youtfi and fourteen sponsors from First Baptist Ctiurcfi of McK- inney left for r lolokai, Hawaii for a mission trip and chioir tour. Tfie group left for DFW airport at 6:15 Tuesday morning and arrived back on Tfiursday, July 16tti. Tliey spent most of thieir nine days on tfie island of Molokai, fiolding Backyard Bible Clubs, Bible Sctiool, and working on the minister ' s house. The Backyard 3ihle Clubs were located in remote areas away fr. 7 town. In these clubs, some of the youth were , olved in activities such as singing, Bible study, c- is, and recreation with children from tod- dlers to sixth graders. At the church, more youth were holding a Vacation Bible School. While many of the youth were working hard with the children, others were scraping and painting the preacher ' s house. Some also worked in a small store run by members of the churc h. The group also put on a musical called The Wit- ness at a park in Kaunakakai. Everyone participated. There were several lead parts and a chorus. The choir put on a mini-concert at the church. Many hours were spent in preparing for the trip. The youth had a lock-in for small workshop classes on crafts, recreations, memory verses and Bible study. t luch time was spent preparing the musical, The Witness. ' ' The group rehearsed for their home church six times before leaving on the mission trip. While in Kaunakakai, the group worked, but also had relaxing times such as a hike to the waterfalls in the mountains. A luau was given by the church. Some of the youth enjoyed picking pineapples, coconuts, and mangos. After their work in Molokai, the group enjoyed a well- deserved stay on the island of Oahu, where they again performed The Witness for a small church. They stayed in Honolulu for two days. On the first day they toured for about nine hours, and on the second day they relaxed before heading back to the mainland and home to McKinney. 1.
