Above: S.G.A. members £ in the Homecoming Pa- rade. 1987-88 marked the beginning of what could be a new trend for Student Government at McKendree. This year ' s S.G.A. had a banner year, accomplishing many of the goals which previous student governments failed to reach. These included the setting up of a satisfactory communi- cation network between students and administration, di- rect, active involvement in all matters regarding students, and the fulfillment of certain student needs in a variety of areas. Persistent involvement and a bit of marketing brought S.G.A. out of the shadows and into the forefront of campus life, identifying it as a strong student influence at McKendree. S.G.A. accomplishments supporting this include a reorganization of S.G.A. ' s internal structure, formation of a student administration parking committee to research possible solutions to the parking problem, in- put into the Deneen Center and Bearcat gym renovations. Vice President Artie Vangampler takes a nap. slow: president Tom Forsvth speaks for the student body at the Convocation Center Groundbreaking. distribution of a major survey, the results of which aided in the implementation of a latin honor system and a geog- raphy class to be offered next year, several meetings with administrators regarding the new security system, and strong recommendations which helped protect student rights. In addition to S.G.A. ' s active role in campus politics, it also dealt with students needs in a smaller arena, under- taking tasks such as requesting maintenance of the clock on second floor Voight, requesting installation of pencil sharpeners in Carnigie Hall, requesting a dictionary in the computer room, and contributing to the fixing of loose stairwell tiles in Baker Hall. S.G.A. even dabbled in some programming, contributing to Day Purple, sponsoring a revolution dance celebrating the 200th anniversary of the signing of the United States Constitution, and taking third place for its Ollie North Float in the Homecoming Pa- rade. The 1987-88 Student Government Association capped off its successful year with the election of its membership for the next year. Comprised of some old and some new mem- bers, the primary goal of the 1988-89 Student Govern- ment is to do more things better next year. ! Resident ' s Life Left. On campus living requires special at- tention. Often extra care must be tak- en to ensure the best possible living accommodations. Resident Assis- tants are assigned to each hall floor and to the suites to provide student support and student voice. Each RA sponsors two student programs throughout the year to enhance stu- dent life. Left. Baker 1st has a pizza- slumber party. Peek-A-Boo . . . Guess Who! Theater At McKendree This was a landmark year for McKendree College Theater. Alpha Theta, the oldest existing Illinois chapter of Alpha Psi Omega, the na- tional honorary theater fraternity, was re-activated thanks to the hard work of Melissa Kaegel, president, and Jeff Bowen, treasurer. Chris Jones was elected vice-president and Betsy Sutton secretary. Also inducted this year were Bob Luetkenhaus, Randy Blakely, Jeff Winget, and two McKendree graduates, Dan Kasten and Eb Pullin. Dr. Brailow was made an honorary member and sponsor. But as always, the plays were the thing, and we had three rousing suc- cesses. The fall production. TAR- TU FFE, was a modern-dress version of Moliere ' s 1 7th century satire of re- ligious hypocrisy. Audiences roared at Preston Croslin ' s slimy Tartuffe, Randy Blakely ' s gullible Orgon, and Chris Jones ' s smart-tounged Dorine. Also featured were Jeff Winget, Bet- sy Sutton, Jeff Bowen, Becky Piper, Ginger Cox, Julie Cervantes, Jamie Lochhead, and Tim Montgomery. Bob Luetkenhaus designed the set and lighting. Dr. Brailow directed. The play broke both box office and attendance records. In the spring, Michael Cristofer ' s THE SHADOW BOX moved audi- ences to laughter and tears with its sensitive portrayal of three terminal cancer patients and their families and friends. Randy Blakely gave a ster- ling farewell performance as Joe, Steve Ebbs debuted as Brian, and Dr. Garbrielle Rowe nearly stole the evening as Felicity. The excellent cast featured Melissa Kaegel, Jeff Win- get, Becky Piper, Peggy Steele, and Jacque Cummings. Bob Luetkenhaus designed the set and lighting. Dr. Brailow directed. The last show of the year was the an- nual performance by Iowa ' s River- side Theatre, which this year present- ed Jules Feiffer ' s HOLD ME, featur- ing Jody Hovland and Ron Clark, with cameo appearances by Melissa Kaegel, Chris Jones, and Steve Ebbs. The comedy revue brought back memories of the premiere production of the re-vitalized McKendree Col- lege Theater: FEIFFER ' S PEOPLE, spring 1983. This was a gala year for the theater, but its ending is sad, as we lose so many valuable members of the class of 1 988. Melissa. Finally, the 1 988 McKendrean is finished, hopefully you will enjoy our work. Despite the fact that we had never before worked on a yearbook, had no idea what to do or where to start, had no real staff to help, and were off to a late start, we did our best to capture the best of McKendree in the 1987-88 school year. Anyone interested in helping us improve the book next year is more than welcome to help. This book is what the students make it and once again, only a handful of students made any effort to ensure that there would even be a book. When only a few people help, a lot is missed. More help is needed to make a better book and to make the work more fun. Keep smiling!
