McKENDREAN McKENDREE COLLEGE 1987 vol. 73 Cover Design by Theresa Eschman rV. -. '  , .  -■ McKendree volunteers help the incoming students check in during NSO. NSO Last fall, lower campus bustled with the activities of NSO or New Student Orien- tation. Student Affairs and Admissions combined to provide new students with an opportunity to meet oth- er students and get ac- quainted with McKendree. A team of McKendree up- per-classmen was chosen to plan activities and to help and guide the new students through their first week. This year ' s motto was Together As One . Many games were played to help everyone to get acquaint- ed. After reaching McKendree at the beginning of the semester, the first priority is to unload the car. ■■■ ■•ISaaiL A Security officer, Stacia Swisher, helps direct traffic behind Baker Hall. The sessions are the only high school Model UN gathering in Southern Illinois, and are one of the largest Model UN conferences in the nation. The Model United Nations sessions ore conducted in the same manner as an official UN session with committees writing and voting on resolutions and forwarding them to the General Assembly for passage. The McKendree MUN program is run by McKendree students under the supervision of Dr. David Ahola, Dr. Pat Folk, and Dr. Bill Haskins. McKendree Continues to Grow McKendree showed evidence of growth this past year. A new greenhouse extension and tennis courts were opened in the fall, and plans for the Convocation Center got off the ground. A ribbon cutting ceremony was performed on Friday, October 3, to officially open the new green- house. Students and faculty had begun work by raising funds and finalizing plans during the spring of 1986. Students managed to raise most of the money needed for this project. Volunteers dug the foundation and begun build- ing the greenhouse during the summer of ' 86. Dr. McGuire plans to use the greenhouse for seed banking. Endangered species of plants will be grown in this pre- serve along with a wide variety of other plants for botany students. The greenhouse is also designed to act as a passive solar heating system for Voigt Science Hall. The new greenhouse is open to every- one in the campus community. V Dr. Richard McGuire watches as Mrs. TenBrink cuts the ribbon marking the official opening of the greenhouse. Students are now able to play tennis on campus. The long awaited courts were built across from the Suites during the sum- mer of 1986. Plans for the new Convocation Center began to take shape this year. Fund raisers were held to help pay for this large project. It is estimated that about a third of the $5 million bill has been raised. The Center will include a new gym, complete with swimming pool and weight room. The build- ing will also house an auditorium and a theater. The tennis courts and Softball diamond are already in place. Plans also include a soc- cer field. A young McKendree College Lady Bearcats volleyball team finished the 1986 season with a 21-13 record after a 3-6 start. The Lady Cats placed third in the district finals, losing to the even- tual champion St. Francis 15-7, 15-5. Coach Jean Scheller attributed youth, a rugged schedule and the pre- vious year ' s success as the reasons for their slow start. The Lady Cats lost only one regular season game in October, defeating schools such as St. Louis Uni- versity and Washington University. McKendree won their own tournament to end the season, raising their record to 19-11. The Lady Bearcats won two match- es during pool play at the district play- offs, over National College of Educa- tion and St. Xavier. Senior Lori Lehr and junior Sharon Bodi were selected to the All-District team. Lori Lehr and Pam Goestenkors were the squad ' s only seniors. Jean Scheller and her Netters look for very successful seasons ahead. 78 1986VolUyL aU Bearcats OPPONEWr RECORD SEPT 5-6 ST. FRANCIS INVITATIC 1AL 1-3 10 UNIV. MISSOURI -ST. The McKendree College Bearcats soccer team had an extremely sucessful 14-4 sea- son, falling one game shy of winning the play- offs. A 2-1 loss to rival Sangamon State in the district finals ended a superb campaign for the Bearcats. McKendree outscored their op- ponents 62-24 during the season. The Bearcats opened the season with an emotional 4-3 victory over Missouri-St. Louis. The McKendree squad could not find the net in the next two gomes against Park College (0-2) and Sangamon (0-4). The Bearcats then broke loose and won eleven straight games, including a remarkable eight shutouts. They won memorable overtime victories against St. Francis and Lindenwood, and also won the exciting Homecoming game against Rock- hurst 2-1. 80 Due to the district point system, the Bearcats were ranked second in the play- offs behind Sangamon even though they had a better winning percentage. After McKendree disposed of National College of Education 3-0 in the first round of the playoffs, they had to travel to Springfield for the district finals. Four players were named to the All-District first team: senior goalie Rick Branding, junior forward Rich Reineger, junior forward Marc Ma- hat, and sophomore Chris Bee. Branding was one of the top goalies in the country with 1 shutouts and a 1.3 GA average. Reineger led the Bearcats in goals (22) and total points (52) for the third year in a row. Mahat led McKendree in as- sists (9) and scored 10 goals. Bee impressed the coaches around the state with his defensive play and ball handling. 1986 Soccer Bearcats oepoKm SCORE SEPT 6 «nv. The club set regular season records in wins (28), fewest losses (4), total points scored (3,357), average points (104.9), and NAIA ranking (8th). The Bearcats led the nation ' s four-year col- leges in offense. The squad was also second in the nation in scoring margin with a 21 .0 mark. The season also saw head coach Harry Statham win his 400th career win against Greenville College 1 1 1-69 on November 14. He is the Winningest active coach in Illinois, and second only to legendary coach Ray Meyer of De- Paul. His current career record is 427- 188. The Bearcats were ranked number one in the district all year, were in the NAIA ' s top twenty poll throughout the second half of the season, and had one of the highest Dunkel ratings in the country. Fahey, Hunsinger, Donette Wheat- ley, and Sue Gilmer all scored dou- ble figures for the season. Despite major setbacks such as lack of student participation and finding the yearbook office twice emp- tied into the stairwell to Upper Pearson Hall (to make room for an orchestra for banquets), the book was finished by the final deadline. A lot of time and effort were spent on producing the book, often at the expense of homework and sleep. This is a publication for the students written by students. It would be a shame to lose it. One person cannot put together an entire yearbook. Hopefully, an Editor is found for next year to carry on and continue to improve this publication. I would like to thank my entire staff — Melissa McPherson. She stuck with the yearbook through to the end of the school year. Special Thanks go to Michelle Stacey-Doyle, Doug Denni- son, and Deb Bethard. They kept me going with their support when this task seemed impossible. Last year ' s Editor, Deb Bethard, traveled back to McKendree to help when deadlines began to get too close for comfort. To Robbie Hale and Bill Krueger: Three Time ' s the Charm!
