Before they had begun post-season play, they had been ranked 11th in the state. Three members of the squad, juniors Lori Junker, Barb Klingelhoefer, and Linda Parker were named to the NAIA District 20 (State of Illinois) Team, and were also voted All-American. The 1985 McKendree Bearcats soccer team started off the season with high expectations, and they fulfilled those expactations easily. New head coach Bob Cordes brought 18 new players to McKendree this year, among them the best talent in this area. Three of those new players were All-State in high school. With only three re- turning players from last years squad, Cordes was able to shape almost an entirely new team, one noted for its goal-tending and the explosiveness of its offense. The men ' s basketball team ended its sea- son with a semi-final playoff game loss to St. Xaviet, 53-52. They reached that game by defeating Rosary in a first round playoff game held here at McKendree. The loss to St. Xavier was a disappointing way to end a season, but it was one of accomplishment and success. During the season, the team ex- perienced many highs and a few low points. The team finished with a record ot 22-11 and saw their coach reach a well-deserved milestone in his career. Many players contributed to this successful season. Rick Stumpe is the only loss to graduation. Rick is an aggres- sive player that has a never say die attitude. He can rip the net faster than most and his constant hustle earned him re- spect around the district. He averaged 18.8 points per game and will be a hard player to re- place. Roger Kingston is the defen- sive specialist on the team. He never scores a lot but contrib- utes far more than what is no- ticeable. He is the type of play- er that takes an assist over pos- sible points. When there is a pressure situation you can bet that Coach Statham will have him in the lineup. Kingston is a junior this year and so will also be back next year. Dave Mordhorst is the ju- nior center that had a sub-par year because of a late injury. Dave is a fine outside shooter and is quick on his feet. He is looked upon to play many roles on the team. He also plays an enforcer role in the middle. He is the team captain and is one of only two two-year start- ers. Walter Rogers is a freshman guard that is a pleasant surprise for the team. When John Bat- son became ineligible, Walter had the task of running the team. This was a difficult situa- tion for the freshman. He han- dled the pressure very well and supplied a scoring output that wasn ' t expected. Walter is a good player in all aspects of the game and is expected to de- velop into a force to be dealt with. Rick Ross is a seasoned vet- eran that brought stability to a young team. He is primarily a rebounder but has had some good scoring games. He took Coach Stathem and Ken Cople another win. over the starting position vacated by Mord- horst ' s injury. Rick is also a fine ballhandler for a big man and is a versatile player. He averaged 7.3 points per game and 7.5 re- bounds. Morrie Fraser has proven to be an excel- lent shooter and a good defensive player. His playing time increased as the season pro- gressed. Fraser came into games and took up some of the scoring load as he had a good offensive output late in the se ason. He will be looked towards next year to replace Stumpe as an outside shooting threat. Larry Mueller, Brent Dudeck and Dave McFarland all played reserve roles on the team. These three players worked hard in practice despite getting little playing time and showed their dedication to the team. Another valuable member of the team is Jeff Krat Thornton, the manager. He played an important role by keeping the team ready for each game and was responsible for keep- ing the team laughing. RCATS: (Front) Dis Bullock. Dearyle R Keirn.Janis Welsch. Basketball Oh, SO CLOSE Front row: Dave McFarland, Larry Mueller, Manager In the past few years the McKendree J.V. team was considered a pushover and an easy win for a visit- ing team. This past year it was changed. The team came out hot and won their first game of the season at Rend Lake College. The game was an overtime affair with just four players playing for McKendree at the end of regular play and overtime. This win sent a warning shot around the league, that McKendree would not be just another easy win. After midseason, disaster struck when four Varsity players were cut from the squad due to bad grades. The J.V. season was immediately canceled and five players from J.V. joined up with the Varsity and helped complete a winning season for the team. Walter, Morri, Larry, Brent, and Dave helped the team during practice and kept the team spirit high. Walter and Morri later went on to start a few games for the Varsity Team. It was an especially good year for lovers of Shakespeare as Riverside Theater crafted two character scenes from some of his best loved plays; and the Chicago Shakespeare Festival brought its delightful and hilarious TWELFTH NIGHT to campus. The first full season in years of all-McKendree pro- ductions started off with Jim Leonard Jr ' s moving and funny THE DIVINERS. Randy Blakely played the re- tarded boy with remarkable powers, and Jeff Noblin. also the theater ' s tech director, played the preacher who tries to help him. The cast included Je(( Edwards, Lori Lowry, Deb Pullin, Jeff Bowen, Martha Ferrell, Melissa Kaegel, Dan Kasten, Christine Jones, and Jeff Thornton. Stage manager was Tanya Wright. Springtime brought George Bernard Shaw ' s bestloved comedy ARMS AND THE MAN to McKendree in a breezy and colorful production that featured Christine Jones as the proud Sergius, and Melissa Kaegel as the ambitious servant girl, Lauka. Dan Kasten, Diane Zielke, Ron Lyons, Jefftdwards, and Jeff Thornton rounded out the cast. Carol Guth was stage manager. Both student productions set attendance records and were superbly directed by David Brailow. « McKendree Invitational Students from thir- teen Southern Illinois area high schools gath- ered on the McKendree campus for the 13th McKendree Model Unit- ed Nations sessions in November and March. Spring Sports ' -live Baskerville The 1984-85 McKendree Bearcats baseball team had a successful fall and spring season this year. Al- though their official schedule didn ' t start until early March, the team played several games in the fall to gain experience and to get used to working together as a team. Even so ... we feel that this book is a true representation of the 1984-85 school year. As editor my path has crossed many individuals who have made my job a pleasurable experience. Among the many are Dr. Rob Ariosto, who assumed the position of advisor during our darkest hour, the staff, Deb Bethard, Craig Kassing, Peggy Rawlings, and Carol Guth, who helped in bringing this book to you. I wish to extend an extra special thanks to the following. Bill Krueger, who after serving as his manag- ing editor of the Review, taught me how to deal with the administra- tion. Paige Mettler, my roommate, who helped me cope with a great many problems and put up with my many ROTTEN moods. Last but certainly not least, I wish to thank Jim Thompson who has been my rock through out my editorship. He not only gave me tremendous support but also helped me through the trials and tribulation. I Love You JCT! You are one in a million. I hope that in 10 years you, the student body, can look back at this book and remember the special year you spent at McKendree. God Bless You! Denise M.
