While some of the old tra- ditions are still around, many new prece- dents have been set. The enrollment saw an increase during the 1982-83 school year and an even bigger increase this year. Buildings have been assigned new uses and major renovations have taken place. Al- though these changes have been occurring, we ' re not always aware of what is going on around us, unless we are directly involved. Take time to look again, you might just see something . . . interesting! Right: Freshman Ken Coplen looks on as twins Dave and Kevin McFarland find their true identity. McKendree Soccer player Greg Bean tries his hand at a new sport. [Opening On a break from classes, Dr. McGuire accompa- nies a prospective McKendree student (his 2 year old son) to the Greek Week Fair. J.T. Opening M 3 Keep Looking . . 4 M Opening Because McKendree is a small college, the students have the advan- tage of knowing almost everyone. Even though there were over 230 students living on campus this year, the students still seemed to know at least a little about the other students around them. But there were always those that seemed to pop out from no where at the end of the year. — Keep looking for those hiding students. The tradi- tional Homecoming Day Soccer Game, Parade, and the evening Queen ' s Coro- nation took place once again. Although the weekend was plagued by Fall rains, there were clear skies just long enough for the Bearcat Soccer Team to finish their game, and for the parade to make its way through Lebanon. Student Life 59 MSO an offer you can ' t refuse For the second year in a row, Student Affairs and Admissions combined to provide new students with an excellent opportunity to meet other new students and get acquainted with McKendree. A team of 1 4 McKendree students were chosen to plan activities and to help and guide the new students through their 1st week. The New Student Orientation Commitee for 1983 consisted of: Sonnie Botwinski, Scott Clements. Lisa Crumley, Bonnie Droste, Jeff Edwards, Robbie Hale, Maggie Herr, Connie Maxfield, Terri McKinley, Nadine Nuzzo, Vicki Seiberlich, Craig Short, Tim Stanberry, and Jeff Trammel. A variety of activities were planned for the week. A dance was held featuring the local band Scanners . The students spent a day at the Bi-County Y.M.C.A. testing their strength and agility, and establishing a feeling of trust in each other. The N.S.O. Committee served a formal Italian Dinner, and an Almost Anything Goes Competition was held in the gym. The students seemed to find out more about each other than they really wanted to. Overall, the N.S.O. Committee put together an entertaining and informative orientation which allowed the students to start the year off in good fashion. April 7th. you would have seen three very enthusiastic McKendree art students, Debbie Pullin, Vieki Seiberlich, and Jeff Jones, painting a 19X4 Buick Skyhawk at the J.C. Penney entrance inside the St. Clair shopping mall. Why ' . ' From April 5th-7th. teams of students from the St. Louis area colleges and universities, sponsored by Buick and the May Centers Inc., were competing tor scholarships by painting Olympic designs on 12 new automobiles. The winners would be awarded a SI, 000 scholarship and second place would receive a $500 scholarship. Shoppers and other interested parties voted for their favorite design McKendree ' s Team worked king hours on the color rendition that had to be submitted before the actual painting could begin. On April 5th, the students began transferring their designs onto the white Skyhawks. Both Dave Ottinger and Jim Drake. McKendree ' s Art directors, were on hand giving moral support and guidance. On April 1 8th. Buick issued a check for SI .000 to McKendree College. It was a job well done. McKendree won the competition and took home the gold ! L£ V CHARIOT LA. ' 84 l iy imltnidunm!. In October 1981, Alexander Wild} gave his family farm near New Athens, valued at approximately one million dollars, to McKendree College. The college used a portion o ' this gift to renovate the I S6K Old Science Hall into much needed office space. The newly renamed Alexander Wildy Hall is serving as office suites for several administrative staffs. In memory of her husband who was a former McKendree College trustee, Mrs. Muriel White of Laguna Hills, California, donated a substantial gift to create the Robert F. White Memorial Mall located between Alexander Wildy Hall and Pear- sons Hall. Mr. and Mrs. White were long-time residents of Sullivan, II. This year ' s record of 5 wins, II losses and 2 ties can be attributed to a number of season long Problems. Perhaps one reason for their dissapointing year was a shortage of play ers. The Bearcats had only 1 6 members which limited the number of fresh players to relieve the starters. The team also experienced early season injuries and the roster was subjected to change because of a number of ineligible ayers. The Bearcats will have some returning members and quite a few new players to start off their 1984 season. Terveer, Klingelhoefer, Monroe, Junker, Parker, Holzinger and Patton, the team was able to take the N AIA District 20 Championship for the second year in a row. This was mainly attributed to the young and inexperienced players. Returning members, Terry Heern, Dave Mordhorst, Greg Rennegarbe and Paul Seiberlich gained some experience playing together the previous year, but problems arose when newcomers Coplen, Batson and Stumpe were brought in to fill in the team. The Cats had to pull together and learn to work as a squad. Their record improved as the season progressed and the Bearcats proved that it isn ' t too often a team w ins 1 8 games and ends with a losing season. The squad maintained a spirit of determination throughout the season and ended with an 18-19 record. They are looking forward to the return of a strong nucleus next year and with it, a winning season. The season was highlighted with a trip to Florida for the Bearcats Christmas Break Tournament in Cocoa Beach. This year ' s Pom Pon Squad consisted of 6 Freshmen. The precise beginnings of the several parts of the academic regalia are hard to deter- mine. Nonetheless, since the medieval students enjoyed the status of clerics during their university years, it has been concluded that their attire found its inspiration in the clerical dress of medieval times. It appears that the gown may be an adaptation of the robe of their friar or priest, the hood of the ftiar ' s cowl, and the mortal board cap of today recalls the skull cap of times when tonsured heads needed protection against the drafty classrooms of medieval times. ?, academic attire first become common for When McKendree College was in her seventh decade of exit began to appear in (he 1890 ' s in the United Stales. Its use has college and university functions and its pattern highly uniform. THE GOWN. There are three gowns: the bachelor ' s, master ' s and doctor ' s. The bachelor ' s is a yoked, closed-front garment, with long pointed sleeves. The present master ' s has long, closed sleeves slit just above the elbow permitting the forearms to protrude. The doctoral gown has full, bell-shaped sleeves. The gown of the doctor is trimmed with velvet panels running down the front and three velvet bars on each sleeve. Black is acceptable trimming for all gowns of the doctor; however, the color of the panels and sleeves may be varied, indicating doctorate held. THE HOOD. The hood was seemingly first worn over the head and attached to the gown. When the skull cap was introduced, the hood was retained but detached. Today it is worn aroung the neck, draped over the shoulders, and hangs down the back of the gown. Each degree (bachelor, master, doctor) has its special hood, which varies in length, and, in case of the doctor ' s, in pattern. The colors with which the hood is lined arc those of the institution which granted the degree. McKendree (observe the hood of (he honorary degree being granted), for example, is known for the white chevrons on a background of purple. The colored velvet binding on the hood, in different widths for bachelor, master, doctor, may suggest the degree or the major area of study represented by the degree. THE CAP. The mortarboard has become the generally accepted headdress in the United States institutions of higher learning, whereas many European institutions still retain their own distinctive style of cap. The doctor may wear the gold tassel on his mortarboard On the other two (master, bachelor) black is perhaps more common, however, the color is often varied.
