He was also chosen unanimously to the NAIA All-District 20 team. Gary averaged 22.8 points and 8.5 rebounds per game. Haverman was also named to the Southwest Baptist All-tournament team. Despite their rel however, they received a NAIA District 20 post-season playoff berth. GOLF VOLLEYBALL The bearcat volleyball team had- its ups and downs dur ing the 1980 season, but they learned a great deal and gained experience for the 1981 stint. The road came to an end on Parents ' Night at the Bear- cat gym, when Washington University of St. Louis was the opponent. The ' Cats continued to play well and appeared to have gained momentum to beat the strong visitors, but Washington University came bacl and took the Bearcats in four games, finalizing their record .at 7-16 The IVlcKendree College golf team advanced to the Na- tional Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) na- tional championship tournament in June, by capturing the IMAIA District 20 title May 4 iii Jacl sonville, Illinois. Dale Jacobs, a senior member of the McKendree College golf team from St. Louis, Missouri was the overall District 20 medalist, shooting a 78. McKendree College golf coach, John Randall was named District 20 Coach-of-the-Year. WA BASEBALL BASKETBALL Coach Harry Statham ' s Bearcats had an outstanding 1980-81 season, a stint that may be the best ever at Mc- Kendree. Finishing the season 1 in District 20, the ' Cats won their way to the District finals, but fell one point short in their bid to the Kansas City tournament. McKendree College basketball mentor, Harry Statham was named the National Association of Intercollegiate Ath- letics (NAIA) District 20 Coach-of-the-Year for 1980-81. WOMEN ' S BASKETBALL McKendree College ' s women ' s basketball team started the season with two tough losses to Lewis and Clark Com unity College and then to Kaskaskia Community College. But their future began to look brighter and they finished the season posting a 11-9 record. Coach Van Smith ' s baseball Bearcats completed the most successful season of his 10-year coaching reign, fin- ishing the 1981 stint with a 26-16 record. Timely clutch hitting, combined with great pitching from one of the best hurling staffs in the St. Louis area, helped the ' Cats roll to several doubleheader sweeps during the season. An at-large berth in the NAIA District 20 playoffs saw the Bearcats seeded fourth. The ' Cats finished the tourna- ment fourth, posting two wins and two losses. mr SOFTBALL The Bearcats Softball team had a busy schedule last sea- son. The ' Cats faced a rebuilding year and closed the sea- son with a respectable 18-14 record.
