IIL 62254 ' 1 ? w Ladies and Gentlemen -MCK presents the season 1980! Somebody once said that the world was a stage, and all people were actors on that stage. That ' s why I chose to arrange this yearbook in the format of a TV season. The maority of students here have grown up with television, and it ' s been a good-or bad- part of their lives. Television seems to reflect life in a lot of eerie ways. As you look through this book you ' ll see the resemblance. The students, of course, are the cast -the actors and actresses that play the lives and experience the many facets of college life which are portrayed in this book. Every television show has a group of people working with and for the cast -the Executives, our Administra- tion, and the crew members, our Faculty and Staff. The whole iVlcKendree College situation is similar to a TV channel - we even have our own call letters - MCK. We have vanous TV shows here on campus, for example, The Wide World of Sports (or is that Wild?), Animal Kingdom, (guess!). The Big Event, lots of Candid Camera shows, a few Real People shows, Mod Squad, Masterpiece Theater, Dragnet, Get Smart, even Award Shows!! We have had a great season here at McKendree (maybe I should say channel MCK.) We tned to get a little bit of everything crunched into this book which took an Incredible amount of work. We seemed to have quite a lot of trouble on the network which resulted in a lot of events and organizations not being pictured. We had snags In communica- tions with professional photographers who were supposed to capture the Big Event -Homecoming -which was then held hostage by said photographer for many months, before being released harmed and severely weakened (see pages 81-96). This yearbook is one of the more expensive books In recent years. Each added detail or decoration on each page ADDS UP QUICKLY, but we felt that since your tuition money would be used in SOME way, it might as well be in a book that you would get to keep free of charge. So we tried to make it an enjoyable book at least, if not a great TV Guide. This is the first year for Advertisements in the McKendrean, and it was a real thnll walking up and down Lebanon ' s street begging antique-store owners to buy a 25-dollar ad. As you can see, not many did (ask Gwen Frederking how she feels about yearbook ads). We had planned on ten pages, raking in a cool $1,000, but $150 is better than $0. As you may or may not have known, an amount equal to tuition for 32 credits was divided among the four co-editors of the REVIEW and the MC- KENDREAN, around $705 for each person, which may or may not have been earned. I feel like this was a heck of a lot of money for doing something I like, so while I eagerly accepted this pay, I also tried to listen to everyone ' s ideas and suggestions for the kxjok. A yearbook may not be a great literary effort, but it is still planned as such and must follow a basic theme, so it was impossible to use all the ideas. I tried to sound ideas out on people (especially Barnett First since they were handy) and I did drop some of my most stupid ideas (although you may not believe that after reading this t)ook). I wanted everyone to be In on the progress all along, and many people were interested In helping, but it ' s very hard to keep a person working in the same direction as the rest of the book without some sort of supervision, and it was kind of hard for me to ask someone to help at 3:30 am, which was best the tjest time for me to create. The main help from others came in the form of sympathy and encouragement, ( Hey, I APPRECIATE IT!! ) So the book is finally here, we worked hard, I hope you enjoy and like it, and don ' t mention the word yearbook to me for the next twenty years. The McKendree Review got off to a shaky start with Anne Meyer giving up the job as Editor after a few weeks. The following issues were very controversial on campus, being accused of having a narrow scope of focus and being biased. Whether or not these charges were true, the 1980 Review will be remembered for being a good conversation piece. In the Spring of 1979, two people, Mike Acton Susi Whitehead, applied as Editor of the McKen- drean so they were chosen co-editors. Susi at- tended a Workshop in August at Silver Dollar City, Mo. Due to internal staff conflicts, the book progressed slowly and was published late in the 1980-81 school year. The McKendree College Women ' s Basketball team concluded the 1979-80 stint with a su ccessful 12-6 mark and a spot in the AIAW playoffs. The Bearcat cagers started the season defeating almost every foe that stood in their way, then a few injuries plagued the team and they faltered in a few late season contests. We ' ve improved, coach Luanne Lucy said. It just seems like this year we had people who could use their heads in practice to learn. The young members picked up the plays easier. They worked hard together. The women ' s basketball team graduates only one member, Kathy Hardesty, and looks to the 1980-81 season with optimism. baseball FIRST ROW: Mike Dinga, Steve Lee, Dennis Kreher, Brian Lindsey, Jeff Eschen- felder, Kevin Vandiver SECOND ROW: Ty Gericke, Kyle Fink, Kerry Baugher, Jay Sabo, Brad Barton, Rich King THIRD R OW: Assistant Coach Don Barton, Ron Martz, Steve Hauseman, Mike Dunnigan, Jeff Kinnigan, Scott Hilmes, Coach Van Smith. Coach Van Smith ' s Bearcat baseball team had several big moments this year on the way to an 18-16 record and a berth in the Distnct 20 playoffs. The Cats lost their opener 5-4 but Jeff Kinnikin pitched a two-hitter in the second game to lead the Bearcats to their first win, against St. Louis U. In a double-header at Blackburn, a 5-0 win in the first game was highlighted by Dunnigan ' s three-hit pitching and three hits (including a home run) by first baseman Scott Hilmes; and then came a 15-0 shellacking of Blackburn in the second game, as Ty Gericke pitched a one-hitter. Two wins against rival Greenville brought the Cats to 9 wins and 8 losses going into the Chicago Catholic Tournament. The Bearcats finished the month of Apnl with a 10-11 record. Four wins, two over Lincoln Christian and two over Illinois College, put them at 15 wins and 12 losses. Winning 3-2 in the first game against Lincoln Christian, the Cats bats exploded in the second game for an 8-1 victory. Mike Dinga, the Bearcat second baseman, nipped two doubles in pacing his team to victory. Four home njns by the Cats, two by Brad Barton and one each by Jay Sabo and Kevin Vandiver, led McKendree to a 19-8 romp in the first game (against Illinois College). In the second game, Scott Hilmes pounded a three-run homer in a nine-run sixth inning to lead the Bearcats to a 16-15 slugfest victory. The results of this hitting binge left the Bearcats with a good shot at the District 20 toumey at season ' s end. The Cats finished regular season play at 16-4. After losing to Lewis U., The Bearcats tripped Aurora from the tourney with a 6-2 victory. Andy Kassebaum ' s two thples helped ignite the Bearcats. The Bearcats lost to St. Francis 10-3 on May 14, ending the baseball season at McKendree. This yearbool took a lot of work, and here are the credits for all that work: Susi Whitehead, Editor-in-Chief Mike Acton, Photography Editor Photographers: (Photo Credits) Mike Acton (MA) Susi Whitehead (SW) Barb Lynn (BL) Brenda Maine Jim Pehle (BM) Elaine Laws (EL) Jeff Colclasure (JC) Marilyn Elder (ME) Gwen Frederking, Advertisement Manager Verna Jones, Research Help Pat Visintine, Typing Cindy Blackmer, Darkroom Help Bonnie Mill, Class Portrait Organizer Stories by: Ronnell Huie, Sigma Brenda Maine Jim Pehle, Sports Elaine Laws, Plays Graduation Pictures by BM JP Thanks very much to McK Staff and Administration (Boy, did they get sick of me bugging them for info!) Thanks very much to Mai1 Gabrenya (where-ever he is) for a good start. Thanks to Gayle Cordes, Herff-Jones Representative, for HELP and sympathy. Thanks to Ron Tremmel, Business Advisor, and growler at Editors. Thanks to all of McK for ideas, encouragement, etc. Some Homecoming photos were by Luttrell Photography (boo!) Class portraits by Sudlow ' s of Danville, II. Well, that ' s the credlts-if I left anyone out, I ' m sorry. This book wasn ' t exactly what I wanted it to be. A lot of events and people aren ' t pictured. For instance, the Golf team. And there were absolutely no shots taken of the Baseball team in action, and I regret that. A lot of Organizations that I wanted photos of simply weren ' t taken, and I found that out too late to do anything about it. I had lots of neat ideas -like a photo of each floor group, or individual photos of the Pom Pon girls, but Jan and Beth ' s photo negatives were missing. I realize a lot of the photos are from Bamett 1st and Walton 1st, but that was inadvertent. (If you want to be a star, get your next-door neighbor to apply as Editor.) I tried to put Photo Credits (pc _) because a good photograph means a lot to the person who took it, and I thought they shoukJ get credit for it. People say a yeartxxjk is better 10 years later, so in 1990 call me up and we ' ll talk about it. OK? Susi V ' 1tf For Reference Not to be taken from this room ■i ' m .-X-.,- , S , vlii 1. V 1 .
