Student Con- gress, of course, consists of representatives from all the classes. Campus Program Board is respon- sible for student activities and sponsors all the films, speakers, dances, concerts, and other social events of the year. Perhaps the greatest challenge to the student government came about when it decided to cancel interdorm for two weeks. The students were vehem- ently opposed to this decision and reacted with initiative and referendum. Although students are generally apathetic toward student government, this was one area where strong feelings lay. $m H ' fi ' S: APOGEE ' S RTAimENTTT S tf nH« ttheiaces artgallerv! Rackham Award 1st Place Kirk Galloway, a junior art major won the Best in the Show award at the Regional Council on Interinstitutional Cooperation (CIC) Travelling Art Exhibit. Galloway ' s oil painting, untitled, was se- lected from over 70 works of art, including weaving, sculpture and photograph. The CIC is a consortium of junior colleges and four-year institutions in the St. Louis Metro East area, formed in 1974 to foster cooperation among member schools. The first award, $300, is named in honor of the CIC ' s founding president, Eric Rackham. This was Prof. Fleming ' s last year at McKendree as a full time staff member and Chairman of the Division of Science and Mathematics. After nearly 30 years of teaching at McKendree, we will always have fond memories of Prof. Anyone who has ever had a class in Voigt Science Hall will remember him; in fact, there aren ' t many people who have graduated from McKendree without having a class with him ! Remem- ber Botany class field trips, thousands of question sheets, a shaking finger and falling by the wayside , long hours of lab over a smelly cat, water the plants please , the saga of the tropical fish, busy secretaries with question sheets, slides of ascospores to jellyfish to be examined, understand? , hot summers in Voigt, sorting out slides, clean-up sprees, lectures with re- membered experiences, a lot of caring about what happens to the students, don ' t fall by the wayside now--keep up, understand? , more question sheets, a twinkling eye and grin, someone who ' s always there, lights off and shades up ' cause it ' s time to lock up Voigt-- are the John lights off now? , working hard in Friday afternoon labs, bet you can ' t tell me. . . , collecting moss, what kind of a tree is that? , a pat on the back, dedication. Prof was a teacher that really cared; truly dedicated to teaching and knowledge for its own sake. Who could forget? Understand, now? Grace Welch--professor emeritus. That is the title McKendree College is bestowing upon her, as she re- tires at the end of spring semester, 1976. This title represents fine and outstanding service to the college, and the love of those whom she is leaving. Grace Welch teaches Speech, Theatre, and English with great enthusiasm. She always enjoys her classes, and looks forward to them. Her main love, however, is the theatre at McKendree. In the past years, she has directed many plays, from 16th century comedy (Moliere ' s THE MISER), to contemporary comedy (Simon ' s BAREFOOT EN THE PARKl, to heavy drama (Lawrence and Lee ' s THE NIGHT THOREAU SPENT DM JAIL). It has always been her goal to provide the col- lege community with a well-rounded theatre program, exemplifying the various ages and styles in which theatre has evolved. 1 President Murphy A new president isn ' t an everyday occurrence On May 22, Dr. Julian Murphy officially became the 29th president of McKendree College through The Presen- tation of the Charge by Mr. Edward Bott. The year has undoubtedly presented Dr. Murphy with many challenges. Perhaps two of the more salient dealt with the Madalyn Murray O ' Hair issue, and the dis- missal of Dr. Owen as Dean of Academic Affairs. Cries for Murphy ' s resig- nation came from the school ' s Methodist affiliates for letting a confirmed atheist speak on campus. He stood firm in his conviction that college is a place for all points of view to be heard. The dismissal of Dr. Owen by Murphy caused a great deal of concern on campus. Students and faculty felt that his grounds for the dismissal were unjusti- fied. He stuck by his decision. Murphy has been damned and exalted. This is a sign of his presence, and that he is taking definite stands. Stands that are popular, unpopular, and those that are met with mixed emotion. But let it be known. They helped under all circumstances. When the tragic death of Sue Schneider occurred this spring, hands and hearts went out to those who were closest to her in an effort to help them in some way through their grief. The sororities and fraternities on campus lend helping hands through their many service projects that serve the college community. Not only do they help others, but the sisterhood and brotherhood promoted by these organizations among their members let them know that there is someone concerned and willing to lend a helping hand. For those who need a hand, help is waiting in the offices on the hill, student affairs, the student union, and by all those running and maintaining the campus. Lf help is truly needed and sincerely sought, it will be found. Many things of this year will fade away in our memory. Yet there will always be memories that linger, that stand out. Those that will be most remembered are probably those we have of someone reaching out to us, lending a helping hand. d Susan Schneider, a senior student at McKendree College, was fatally injured in an auto- mobile accident on the night of April 22. Susan, who was very active here on campus, was a math and music major. Her other interests included the McKendree College Choir, Sigma Zeta, and the Religious Life Association, of which she was the secretary. She had already been accepted for an assistantship at Eastern Illinois University for the coming fall. Her death leaves a great emptiness in the lives and hearts of her family and friends. J Our country has grown and prospered now for 200 years. There have been the good and the bad times, the rough and the pleasant times. Through it all we have grown and ma- tured both as individuals and a nation. McKendree has been around for 148 of our nation ' s 200 years. It too has faced the good and the bad, the rough and the pleas- ant. It has grown and developed, and sent grown and developed men and women as ma- ture individuals to the challenge of society and the nation. Many rose to and above the challenge strengthening our nation and pro- ving the value of small private colleges to the nation. The theme this year may have been Hands helping hands , but to McKendree, that is a timeless theme. The faith and confidence in oneself and others that is instilled in a person in an atmosphere of concern and helpfulness becomes a per- vading spirit in that person ' s life. That spirit is carried over into life long endea- vors and the spirit is felt by those who come into contact with it. In this manner it pro- liferates among the people of a community. A hand offered in friendship and concern may seem insignificant at the time. How- ever, knowing there is concern present, and a hand waiting to help can make all the difference in a time of personal turmoil. As long as the spirit of concern and willingness to extend a helping hand exists, we will ma- ture, grow, and become strong as individ- uals, a college, a community, and a nation.
