;S c b, V % 1 wtH 4 DEDICATION McKendree College and the 1964 McKendrean Staff dedicate this yearbook to St. Louis, Missouri, on her 200th Anniversary, 1764-1964. Although McKendree College is twenty-five miles from the city, it has become part of the metropolitan area of St. Louis. St. Louis provides a place of cultural, religious, and social interest to students and faculty. In the 200 years since her founding, St. Louis has grown from a small trading post into a large, modern city. McKendree College is likewise trying to advance from a small school to a larger, more cosmopolitan one. Both have acted as gateways of advancement - St. Louis as a gateway to the West in many areas, McKendree as a gateway to education in the Mid-West. With pride in both the City of St. Louis and our own McKendree College, we thus present this book. McKendree College - The Greatest and best in the Middle West. Such support by the alumni, churches of the Southern Illinois Conference, and other friends of McKendree is unprecedented in the history of the college. According to President Max P. Allen, ... these two successful campaigns have assured us at Mc- Kendree that if we continue to serve the young people who are coming to us in ever increasing numbers, we will be able to secur the additional support necessary to house and educate them in the finest McKendree traditions of quality that led Theodore Roose- velt to refer to McKendree as the oldest and best in the Middle West. Charge! Philo - Home Sweet Home We always scrub the floor at Lambert Field with toothbrushes! And, not so fast! Hey! Three musketeers! Student Discipline Committee? Sure I like fresh air. McKendree College has numerous teas and receptions during the year, many of which honor special guests and occasions. There is always a lot of chatter, tea, and cookies shared by all. This picture is of the reception following the dedication of the new Circuit Riders Hall on December 7, home- coming weekend. As a student for three and one-half years I have witnessed progress. The planning and success of the campaigns to raise funds show that people realize the value of a small school. As a native of St. Louis, I feel this city has also been making strides for- ward. The progress shown here at McKendree and the progress made by St. Louis is equally important to Illinois, Missouri, the Mid-West, and our Nation. As Editor of the 1964 McKendrean I hope this book will serve as a lasting memory to students and friends of the College. Dale A. Fertig, Editor.
