Constructed in 1856, the chapel houses the nation ' s oldest bell. McKendree is one of the few colleges in the United States that uses a bell to call students to class. Happy Birthday, Chapel! The 1955- ' 56 school year was a very busy one for the women of Alpha Omega. Rush week. Home- coming, pledging and initiation made the time between classes pass very quickly. Representing AO on campus this year were Sandra Schupbach. President of Student-Faculty Council for two semesters; Kay Clark and Carol Fritz, Co-Editors of the 1956 McKendrean; Louise Simmons, Junior class candidate for Homecoming Queen; Marylou Jenkins, May Fete Queen; Judie Gutekunst, Editor of the Circuit Writer; Mary Lois Sauer, Secretary-Treasurer of FT A; Kay Clark, First Prize for Essay in Circuit Rider Contest; and Sandra Schupbach was chosen for Who ' s Who. The spring banquet, the May Fete and all the graduation traditions highlighted the latter part of the year. CLIO September again- -the campus was asceneof lively activity, beginning with Rush. With classes under- way, Clio was kept busy by Homecoming, the Amanda Glenn Oratorical contest, open house, and many social activities. Repr esenting us on campus were Bette Wadsack and Alice McPherson elected to Who ' s VVho ; Donna Faye Roper, Vice-President of MSM and President of FT A: Barbara Bradshaw, 1955- ' 56 Home- coming Queen and Treasurer of MSM; Lois Johnson, Secretary-Treasurer of Kappa Chi. Other positions held were Frances Mitchell, Vice-President of McK Club; Phyllis Teal, Secretary- Treasurer of McK Club; Carol Goings, Editor of McK Review; Kaywynne (Weiler) Adams, First Prize in Amanda Glenn Contest and First in the Circuit Writer Contest; Sandra Beasely, Freshman Homecoming Queen candidate and Alice McPherson, Senior class candidate. The latter part of the year found us working on the May Fete and the spring banquet. May came quickly--the end of another successful year. Working together in a common bond has formed us into a strong, active chapter. We are proud of the achievement of Philo and hope that future years will be as bountiful as the preceeding have been. Philo leaders were found in every phase of campus life. Walter Storey was Vice-President of Kappa Chi; Don Wood was elected to Who ' s Who ; and Don Metzger, Associate Editor of the McK Review. We were fortunate in having two capable presidents at the helm of our society during the school year. Don Wood was president during the first semester and Ron Stoltz took command for the second semester. With men like these to lead us and men such as our members are to participate, it is understandable that we have enjoyed a successful year. After a flurry of freshman entertainment, Platon- ians set sails for another year on McKendree campus. During the year our members were active in a great many campus organizations, acting as leaders as well as members. Homecoming was soon upon us and we found ourselves faced with the job of making a float. After many headaches and long hard work, we were ready. FinaUy the big day came and we were proud and happy as we paraded with the rest. Plato was represented on campus by Tom Gensler, President of Pi Kappa Delta; Wayne Gartside, Vice-President of Veterans ' Club; Virgil Wadsack Who ' s Who and Treasurer of the Veterans ' Club; and Jim Birmingham, Vice-President of FT A. McKendreans receive honorary degrees. McKendree quartet sings at Little Chapel dedication. The JV ' s also got into the act, tying for first place in their first season in the Greater St. Louis conference. Coach James E. Collie ' s basketball team rolled up a 23-6 record (11-1 in league play), won its last 14 straight games, qualified for an N.A.I. A. play- off, and ran its home court winning streak to 29. Last year ' s baseball team came from way back to gain a loop tie with a 5-2 record. The wrestling team picked up a lot of experience- -if not many victories. Is it the cover, the pages depicting life on campus, the in- formation about faculty and students, and patron pages? A yearbook is all of this and more. It ' s a lot of work, late hours in the Journalism room with Jo, assembling copy, doing write ups, planning, revising, and making the final mats. There have been dis- agreements, feverish activity, and a lot of fun too. The editors could not have possibly completed the final copy of the McKendrean without the combined efforts of our complete staff. Miss Kinder, Wally, from Artcraft Studio in Belleville, and Don Brown, Com- mercial photographer in Lebanon. Thus we offer you this--the completion of our com- bined efforts--The 1956 McKendrean. |IHWWW«fwW ' •■J WP INTER-COLLEGIATE PRESS Publishers Cover Monutot f urers Book Binders FACIORY HOME OfMCE Kansas City m mM - a m I m x r y n i ((.■W ' t - rii- i . -..• -..- ' ' ■a!«K«B«afo ' ' .: . s P i6$ - U .gt ' tL_ ' : I T Lifr ■C Mvti r .JL ' • T .
