We at Mclieesport High School have had the priv- ilege of receiving both physical and cultural training. We have had the opportunity of studying under competent teachers, all the subjects necessary for accredited academic trainingfthe biological, physical, and social sciences, as well as courses in manual and business training. In all probability, some of our Adventures in Scholar- ship, as yinal examinations, have not been altogether pleasant. But, such adventures have prepared us for our life after graduation. As we have had to overcome obstacles in our attempt to gain knowledge at school, so will we have to cope with like situations after graduation. The many fine thoughts and bits of wisdom we have gathered here should aid us to meet every crisis in life. May our school ever remain true to its fine ideals and its high scholastic standards! 4' f , -f f 26 Lighting the Candle of Leadership 27 FRESHMEN AT SHAW CLASS OF 1951 Four long years lie ahead of you. U u o If N Friendships are the best books in the library of life. Our school may be thought of as the library, and our stu- dents as the books of friendship. By combining these books into many volumes, we can readily get a mental picture of our clubs. Many activities, such as plays, dances, musicals, debates, chapel programs, have been sponsored by our clubs. One of the shelves in our friendship library contains volumes of songs, namely, our glee clubs. All these groups have done much to entertain and uplift the student body. Other important volumes to be considered are the orchestras, bands, debate and dramatic clubs, and the stu- dent council. Herein every student is given an opportunity to exhibit his ability in the field of music, art, debate, and student leadership. Another section of our friendship library contains f l volumes of interesting adventures, recorded by the staffs of the Yough-a-Mon and the Red and Blue. Both have reflected a true school spirit. The A team came out on top with six wins out of six. The A team consisted of Esther Beck and Joan Rotheram, aHirmative, Dolores Lescinski and Peter Sternlieb, negative. The second debate tournament of the season was held at St. Benedict Academy. Here again McKeesport's A team came out on top with six wins out of six. On December Sth the University of of Pitts- burgh played host to 24 schools. Six wins out of six was the result for McKeesport's team. The annual session of Student Congress was held December 11 and 12 at Sacred Heart High School. joan Rotheram was elected Speaker of the House. Dolores Lescinski, Peter Sternlieb, and Esther Beck were candidates for outstanding speaker in their respective Houses. Sternlieb came in second in the Senate. Others who attended the Congress were Paul Whitehead, Melvin Penner, David Kalkstone, Robert Curry, Merle Buckler, joan Campbell, and Robert Bolt. The first tournament of the New Year took place at West View High School on january 9th and 10th. McKeesport came in third, winning 8 out of 10 debates. Those interested in the various speech fields had an opportunity to display their skill at a speech tournament at St. Xaviers. Our outstanding speaker there was Pete Sternlieb, who came out first in extemporaneous speaking. On january 51 a debate tournament was held at Greensburg High School. McKeesport won the gavel in the A section. Apparently, the McKeesport debate team had a widespread reputation, for Coach Helen Mal- seed was invited to send a team to Canton, Ohio, and to Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Because of a small hindrance called money, the team was not able to accept either invitation. February 7th brought another speech tourna- ment, this time at Donora High School. Once more Pete Sternlieb came out in first place in ex- temporaneous speaking. Florence Wanetick placed third in poetry. Esther Beck was second in orator- ical. At the Monessen Speech Tournament held on February 12, McKeesport had six people who stayed until the final round. Pete Sternlieb won second place in extemporaneous speaking. Valentines day meant a big day for McKees- port's Debate Club. They held their annual tour- nament which was a success. The gavel went to Shadyside Academy. On February 28th the semi'fina1 speech tour- nament was held. Those who participated were Richard McFadden, Dolores Lescinski, Peter Stern- lieb, Melvin Penner, Florence Wanetick, Joan Campbell, Marilyn Mercur, Esther Beck, Robert Bolt, and Merle Buckler, The finals in Speech were held at Duquesne University on March 6. Dolores Lescinski won second place in oratorical declamation. Also on March 6, Shady Side played host to a debate tournament. McKeesport won the gavel in the A division. The National Forensic debate finals were held at Geneva College in Beaver Falls on March 12 and 13. The varsity consisted of Esther Beck, joan Rotheram, Dolores Lescinski, and Pete Sternlieb. The alternates were David Kalkstone and Nancy Hennis. Nineteen schools participated in the finals, the subject of which was: Resolved, that the Federal Government shall require arbitration of labor disputes in all basic American industries. McKeesport High won both the affirmative and negative contests. St. Vincent Academy was sec- ondg Donora High School rated third. It was a hard fought, clean struggle all the way with Hackett, Tremont, Bocetti, and Michalski starring throughout the game. McKeesport 26 Charleroi 6 Twice-beaten Charleroi High came -back with a vengeance against McKeesport providing very stiff opposition for the Tigers who made four touchdowns to win by a score of 26-6. The tricky Cougar offense played rough with the McKeesport line during the first half. At the beginning of the second quarter the Tigers began to roll. There- after, McKeesport scored in every quarter, with Hackett, Tremont, Michalski, and Payne leading the attack. McKeesport 30 Jeannette 15 Jeannette was an easy victim for the Tigers, who won their ninth game by the score of 50-15. This was the annual Dad's Day game, and close to 11,000 fans watched McKeesport jump into an early lead. Again, it was Hackett's stellar passing that resulted in the scoring. The last quarter saw the McKeesport reserves carrying on for the Tigers. Jeannette scored twice during the quarter. McKeesport 14 Wilkinsburg 6 The Tigers ended their perfect AA card with a 14 to 6 win over Wilkinsburg. The 7500 rain- soaked spectators proclaimed this game the best of the year. McKeesport's first score came in the in- itial stanza when,, following a Tiger eleven-play drive up the field, Hackett went over the goal line. A second quarter deadlock was broken when Herr of Wihcinsburg raced around- left end for six points. Late in the final quarter, McKeesport crashed over for the second score. McKeesport 13 York 0 With sixteen seniors leading the way, the Ti- gets completed their unbeaten, untied season with a 1.5-0 win over William Penn High on snow and mud covered Small Field at York on November 15. Battling the weather, as well as the York eleven, the Weiglemen -scored touchdowns in the first and third quarters to gain their eleventh win of the year. Because of the weather conditions, the Tigers had to resort to ground plays. McKeesport 14 Miami 54 Six weeks after the York game, the McKeesport Tigers journeyed by air to Miami, Florida, to play a benefit game in the Orange Bowl, Christmas night. Somehow, the Tigers failed to get started during the first half. At the end of the half, Miami led 27 to 0. The second half was somehow a dif- ferent story. McKeesport scored two touchdowns by Yamnicky and Bergman. John Koesy and James Dooley proved a fatal scoring combination. INDIVIDUAL SCORING HONORS T.D. Con. Total! A Resume Although the boys were outclassed in practically every contest, they never fail- ed to give their opponents a tough fight. The paucity of victories was largely due to the fact that our opponents were old at the game. This was McKeesport's sec- ond year in soccer composition. Jack Bergman's stellar play was one of the high lights of the season. He per- formed brilliantly as goalie and as forward. Other outstanding players were Phil Rogers and Rudy Leonardo. The pre-season games clearly indicated the possi- bilities of a winning aggregation, even though our boys lost to Wilkinsburg, Mt. Lebanon, and Ford City. But, when the section games began Mc- Keesport was practically unbeatable. In rapid suc- cession, the Tigers defeated such arch rivals as Homestead, Duquesne, and Clairton. Only once did they falter-the second game with Munhall, when the latter won by the score of 54-39. McKeesport was again assigned to Section Six, along with Clairton, Donora, Duquesne, Home- stead, Monongahela, and Munhall. The opening sectional game with Homestead at Homestead wss surely a thriller, 41-40. Duquesne, our next op- ponent, was greatly outclassed, 47-26. Coach Campbells basketeers followed these successes with victories over Clairton, Donora, Mononga- hela, and Munhall. The first half of the season showed a perfect record for the Tigers. Our super- iority soon became well established, although Du- McKeesport 10 14 14 15453 quesne tried valiantly to upset the team, the close score, 42-40, indicating the hectic battle. The out- come of the sectional leadership was clearly known when we defeated Monongahela for the second time. The closing game with Munhall was really an anti-climax contest and a loss. The last game gave the Tigers a season's mark of eleven wins and one loss. Now, all eyes focused on the elimina- tion contests in Pittsburgh. If there is to be any kind of individual recog- nition, every player should be mentioned. Cap- tain Misenhelter was outstanding in his passing and setting up plays. Tremont stood out for his shooting and passing. Allen, Lelfard, and Thomas were uncanny in controlling the rebounds. Thom- as was truly a ball-hawk. Allen was the leading point-getter. Lelfard got many rebounds, and seemed to make the team click from his pivot po- sition. Payne and Come, frequently seen in the lineup, kept things at a fast pace. Elimination Round One McKeesport scored a decisive victory over Charleroi, 53-40, in the quarter final playoffs be- fore a packed Pitt Stadium, March 1. The Charle- roi Cougars threatened all the way, but the super- ior playing of the Tigers staved off a defeat. Allen was high man with 17 markers. Trement scored 16 points.
