WHERE WE WENT On i8 November MC KEAN departed Long Beach on the first leg of her transit to WestPac, arriving in Pearl Harbor on 23 November. MC KEAN left for Subic Bay on 26 November accompanying the nuclear powered USS ENTERPRISE CCVA CND 65l and USS BAINBRIDGE CDLG CNI 25l, ar- riving on 8 December, completing one of the highest speed, long-range transits ever made by a conventional destroyer. MC KEAN got underway for DaNang, Viet- nam, on I7 December for anit-PT boat training in preparation for her assignment to Search and Rescue CSARI operations in the Gulf of Tonkin. 0n 22 December Mc KEAN relieved USS FLOYD B. PARKS CDD 8843 as Northern SAR shotgun destroyer and helo inflight refueler. MC KEAN re- mained on SAR station until 25 January con- ducting a record breaking one-hundred in- flight helicopter refuelings in this thirty day period. MC KEAN arrived in Hong Kong on 25 .lan- ,ti , . - Q5 , it If Q . h wwe C' ' A 4 In A lively, but sad departure uary for six days of rest and relaxation. On 2 February MC KEAN returned to Subic Bay for a thirteen day upkeep period with USS ISLE ROYALE CAD 295. NIC KEAN left for I Corps Area of South Vietnam on I7 February for three days of Naval Gunfire Support, then returned to Northern SAR station on 23 February for another eighteen days of inflight refueling of SAR helicopters. MC KEAN returned to the gun line on I3 March for two days in the IV Corps Area and ten days in the II Corps Area. 0n 27 March, MC KEAN arrived in Subic Bay for a short five day upkeep period, depart- ing on 2 April to conduct Anti-Submarine Warfare exercises with USS RAZORBACK CSS 394i and USS CHANDLER CDD7I7l. MC KEAN returned to the gun line on 6 April for a week in the III Corps Area. The gun ship MC KEAN fired over 4,000 rounds of 5 f38 caliber proiectiIesduringherNGFS missions in support of allied operations in South Vietnam. Arriving in Subic Bay on I4 April, MC KEAN made final preparations for an Internal Survey Inspection on 20-2l April. MC KEAN got underway on 24 April as a representative of the Seventh Fleet in the annual Coral Sea Celebration held in Australia and New Zealand. 0n 8 May MC KEAN arrived in Melbourne for five days of RER after brief fuel stops at Manus and Brisbane. MC KEAN visited Auckland on I7 May for an additional five days of celebrating the Battle of the Coral Sea. On 22 MUY MC KEAN departed New Zealand and com- menced her final leg to CONUS with fuel stops at Pago Pago and Pearl Harbor. MC KEAN arrived in Long Beach on8..lune, com- pleting an almost seven months WestPaC cruise. After a six week period of leave and uPl499P MC KEAN left Long Beach and on 20 July arrived at the San Francisco Bay Naval Shipyard at Mare Island for a four rf10f1I'lI extensive shipyard overhaul.
