Girls Basketball Team LEFT TO RIGHT Barba a Mldgley Helen Sm th Girls' Basketball Last fall when the general call for basketeers came out, sixteen eager girls hit the hardwood floor of the basketball court. Coach Danny Billigmeier, again at the helm, displayed the confident, satisfied air which any coach would have upon being greeted with such an array of talent. That pair of deceptive left-handed forwards, Myrna Leir and Lois Vance, with agile center Doreen Hoyt proved the spark for the front court, and aggressive Clata Harding rangey but graceful Irene Smith, shifty Marlys Midgley and reliable Merilyn Aasand proved able guards Behind these veterans came some promising aspirants headed by Delores Bergstad Maxine Conant, Barbara Midgley Phyllis Bonnet Helen Smith, and a seventh grader, Lola Anderson In December Doreen Hoyt s transfer to Silverton Oregon compelled Coach Billigmeier to reorganize his squad. Irene was shifted to the front court and Delores Bergstad who had demonstrated ability at ball hawking was shifted to bolster the back court It was a disorganized team that met the undefeated Courtenay team on our floor, The Blazerettes took a disappointing defeat, followed shortly by a surprise defeat at the hands of Kensal In February, with a slight break in the weather and the alleviation of the threatened coal shortage basketball was again resumed The team worked hard to perfect their game for the approaching county and district plays By mid February confidence had been restored when the Blazerettes handed Warwick a defeat of 63-2 Lois Vance had perfected her left handed hook shot and displayed perfect floor work by terrific feinting and passing Irene s pevot shot rebounding and skill followed by Mryna Leir s accurate fast firing proved that the front trio was operating with great efficiency The trio was definitely reinforced by sparky fleet footed Lola Anderson a seventh grader and the veteran guards Clara Marlys Merilyn and Delores In the clutches Maxine Barbara Phyllis and Helen were proving that they were able to give good account of themselves to keep their team in the winning coluxnn Max ne Conant Clara Harding Lo s Vance Marlys Midgley Lola Anderson Delo es Bergstad Marilyn A s nd Irene Sm th 30 I I I .
