In the year 1917 the Congress of the United States enacted a program of aid to vocational instruction whereby the Department of Agriculture established in schools across the country both the Future Farmers of America and the feminine counter-part of this organization-The Future Homemakers of America. The Millcreek chapter of the latter, sponsored by the active Miss Parini had a busy season with many activities such as miniature footballs for the annual Save-An-Eye-Game and maintaining a candy, packing Christmas baskets and dressing dolls for needy families as a Christmas project, and entering a kitchen planning contest. On a state wide level, fifteen girls represented our F.H.A. at a Region A meeting held at Indiana State Teachers College, and later on in the year four more gained the privilege to attend another at Pittsburgh through diligent work and outstanding progress. I In its purpose to teach the young women of today the basic fundamentals of home- -making like baby care, sewing, family management, and meal planning the Millcreek F.H.A. has succeeded admirably thanks to a great extent, of course, to its sponsor Miss Parini. 85

FUTURE FARMERS OF AMERICA Row 1: J. Payne, Advisor, R. Adams, A. Edwards, T. Curtiss, A. Reed, J. Ames, D. Kallenfbach, D. Woods, E. Adams, G. Bowers, R. Moon. Row 2: L. Copeland, A. Senger, J. Sprague. Row 4: R. Vash, R. Bogue, C. Moon, L. Haas, C. Alenbacher, M. Anderson, A. Fields, P. Payne. As the name implies, the Future Farmers of America is a county school organiza- tion found in the United States, Hawaii, and Alaska, having as its goal the development of efficient, intelligent farmers and citizens. Covering grades 8 to 12, the F. F. A. in Millcreek follows only the strictest parliamentary procedure and each member is himself an accomplished parliamentartian capable of handling the presidency or chair- manship. Since the purpose of the club is not only to develop successful farmers, but good, in- telligent citizens as well, they have many and widely varying activities to raise money land sometimes just to have a plain old good timej ranging from selling Christmas trees to playing a mighty rugged game of basketball. The Project is rated very highly in the eye of a student. As the name indicates, this is a project undertaken by each stu- dent-a record of his adventure in husbandry. It keeps track of such things as work hours spent on the job, capital invested, profit returned, and utilization of agricul- tural developments. Monetary rewards are received by the students preparing the pro- ject book deemed most worthy on the basis of intelligent agricultural practice and neatness. Come December, it then goes on to Harrisburg to vie for national honors. In early January the three members receiving the most points, which are derived from the project book and V-arious awards, are sent to the F. F. A. State Convention. Upon payment of their expenses, others often go too. This 4-day convention is an ex- perience that the boys look forward to with great anticipation. The activities result in the building of good character, broadening the knowledge of agricultural problems and the creation of staunch, worthy Americans. 84
