TUDE COUNCIL lst row: N. Sawdeyg M. Latimer, N. Fishery J. Prindleg J. Yochini, Presidentg C. Christenseng A. Kettenacherg K. Prindle, N. Rose. 2nd row: D. McChesneyg J. Van Geemg G. Our student body was represented this year in the Student Council by six seniors, five juniors, four sophomores, three freshmen, two eighth graders and two seventh graders. Elected President, Vice President and Secretary-Treasurer were Jim Yochim, Carol Christensen, and Jean Prindle in that order. In an endeavor to better the school, the Student Council invoked a system of hall monitoring designed to prevent confusion and extraneous noises in the hall, and to keep students from skipping class. Where before if a student wanted to go to the of- fice he had to go all the way up and get permission from the teacher-now he merely has to go up to the teacher, obtain permission, have her fill out a slip indicating the destination, day, period, and the student's name, and show the pass to every hall mon- itor on the way. If he were caught in the hall without a pass, he would be sent to the office, so one can well see the merit of this system. This year they also wrote a new constitution establishing the apportionment of representatives of the various grades to the Council, the school colors, the motto, and the seal. High on the list of accomplishments of this progressive organization was the suc- cessful Alumni-Varsity game played to raise money for the March of Dimes. A dance followed the game. It is achievements such as these that have made the Student Council so indispensable in our school scene. 76

ASSEMBLY COMMITTEE In order to give the student body a voice in the selection of our school assemblies, Mrs. Hahn organized the Assembly Committee which elected Will Humphries as chairman. Typical of the organizational abilities of this committee was the extemporaneous program of the pre-Christmas season. The A Cappella presented a variety of musical selections pertaining to the season and some of the individual talents of the school in- cluding the faculty were called upon to favor us with their renditions, many of which were selected by popular request from the audience- A few months later we were surprised by another assembly on Abraham Lincoln presented through the kind courtesy of the Lincoln Insurance Company, 1109 G. Dan- iel Baldwin Building. In an attempt to apportion the assemblies over a long period of time, we had an- other one the next week, which was sincerely appreciated by the entire student body. Dr. O. W. Wermingham entertained us with a wonderful lecture illustrating the ne- cessity of a firm code of morals and the folly of ignoring this necessity by relying strictly on the carnal to provide a happy life in these troubled times. Once in a lifetime coups like these characterized the Assembly Committees ac- tivities carried on in spite of the very adverse circumstances imposed upon them by the extremely crowded conditions which necessitated using the auditorium as a study hall. lst row: C.
