You'vc got to keep on growing. One little deed won't keep on go- ing. Seniors Thank Mr. Ellsworth Much of the art work in this special issue was also under the guidance of Mr. Ted lillsworth. We, the seniors, wish to convey our deepest appreciation to Mr. Ellsworth for his help in niaking this issue, one that we will always remember. In appreciation of his special work and accomplishments for the Senior issue as well as his untiring work with the staff and students in the job of photographing for the Record, a special declaration of thanks and acknowledgement is due Mr. Ted Ellsworth. The entire senior class wishes to thank him for his efforts, and hope for his continued service to McCly- monds. At last has come The parting hour To all McClymonds Seniors. VVe who graduate Feel deep regret. Yet, this is the time For which VVe long have VVaitcd. Graduates Asked To 'Be the Best' I should like to remind you, grad- uating seniors, that you can't all be' captains of a ship, but there is still need for a good crew. You can't all be pines on the top of the hill, but you can be a brush in the valley. If you can't be a brush, you may he a bit of grass which brightens the highway of life. If you can't be a highway, then just be a trail. If you can't be the sun, be a star. If you can't be a lighthouse, be a candle. But, be the best of what-ever you are. Elwood V. I'll miss Mack and friendships which I will never know again. I'll miss the early morning. call to school-the rush before the bell- the gaiety and laughter of .my com- rades. To express any feeling at leav- ing this behind, would require more than rhyme or famous quotations, for a school such as McClymonds could not be dismissed with any common words as are the cares of the day with the fall of the night. So I can't say goodbye, I'll just say so long. So long to my friends whom I will later meet in our world experiences, so long to the teach- ers who will carry on Mack tradi- tions and their own work, but never will I be able to dismiss from my mind McClymonds, which repre- sents more than the three R's in our education. ' Yes, Parting is such sweet sor- row. True, there are many ways Open, Letter To the Faculty Dear Faculty: It is not very often that praise or gratitude reach you. It is still seldom that we, the students, offer you a word of thanks or appreciation. Through the past three years you have endured our ceaseless talking, ignored our apparent stupidity, and accepted smiling our illegible home- work, unintelligible answers, and the trite jokes which you must hear, year in and year out. Unconscioiusly, we have looked to you for knowledge, accepting the things you said as truth. We have I formulated our opinions though the spectrum of your teaching. We have compiled a philosophy from the a respect for knowledge by your ideas you presented. We have gained sincerity to your profession. I For three years you have watched us grow, mentally, physically, and spiritually. You have seen your words take root in some students, wither away in others. You've known bright success and sad dis- appontment. Now we are stepping into a dif- ferent realm. If we are young men and women prepared to meet it with wisdom and courage, a large part of the thanks is due you. If we are not, the blame lies within ourselves. We wish to extend our deepest gratitude to the faculty of McCly- monds. THE SENIOR CLASS, JANUARY 1957. to tell of our regrets at this time. The last three years have passed so quickly that l can hardly believe that the time has come for you to leave us. VVe will miss you and I know that for me, that school will seem somehow empty without my seeing one or another of you in the halls and various classrooms. Ilowever I realize that you must move forward to other goals and my hope is that you will do so with the feeling that your stay here at McClymonds has been both a re- warding and profitable experience for you. I have watched you grow socially and academically, as well as phy- sically, and would hardly know you now as poised and able seniors, from the eager and Highty group of low tens I started with. During your stay with us here, you have learned to work with others and to know capacities and capabilities, and I am proud of the records that you have achieved. My only wish that you will make full use of what you have learned here at Mcfllymonds to achieve success and happiness in your future lives. Sincerely, llavid llelm Everyone Goes When The Wagon Comes This is the hardest task that I have yet been forced to face during my happy days here with you. In the past three years you have done much for me. You have been my friends, and for the gearter part, constituted lily interests and affairs. Now I leave you to face a -greater world, full of more complex prob- lems. It is my hope that the things you have taught me here will make n1e a stronger and more useful citizen in this world. Four years ago, when most of us came to Mack we used to envy the high seniors and wished that jan- uary Z5, 1057, would hurry and come. january 25 would have been a day anyone of the present high seniors looked forward to with anxiety. liut now that it is a matter Record Head Says of days away, we are wondering if it is as wonderful to graduate as we thought it would be. The thought of graduation is a wonderful one as well as a sad one, because we can feel we have ac- complished something in' our 12 years of learning. It is also a sorrow- ful one. Sorrowful because we will leave behind friends and teachers who we have grown very fond of us during our stay at McClyn1onds. I, as associate editor of the Record will miss Mack very much, since all the things that I have had the plea- sure of doing have brought great rc- turns to me in personal satisfaction and enjoyment. I will surely always remember my happy years here at McClymonds High School. Billy Reed Associate Editor Farewell To Successful Terms as Editor lfVith the ending of the term so close at hand, graduation is the one thing which occupies the minds of the high seniors. On January 25, many of us will begin to wonder if we really want to leave school as much as we think we do now. Good- byes are words which are terribly hard to say, but that is what we will he saying to our school, and our former classmates when gradu- ation night rolls around. As editor of the McClymonds Record for the past two terms, I have had some wonderful times, remembrances of them will stay with me always. I doubt if any editor could have asked .for a better staff than I had for the past year. No donlit several issues of the Record would still be down at print shop if the staff had not gotten together to aid the common cause--getting the paper out. There have been times when we all haven't gotten along as well as we should, but that is only natural. Well this is thirty for meg I would like to thank everyone for the fine cooperation during my edi- torship. he responsibility has been heavy at times, but it has been more fun than work, to my way of think- ing. It is my hope that Walter Morris, your next editor, has as much enjoyment during his stay in this office as I have. The colleges we enter will be larg- er. There will be more buildings for us to explore. During the first few days we may feel lost. Everything will seem strange and different. In time we will become accustomed to our new surroundings and every- thing will not be so unfamiliar and we will have forgotten that feeling of strangness. As we go on, our character will be developed so that we will be able to take not only the easy things and pleasures of'life, but also the knocks. Y The things that we achieve in our senior high will help us to overcome the obstacles which we must face in the future. In a short space of time new stu- dies will have become part of our routine, We will have explored the avenues of friendship and new in- terest and found many things to' keep our interest. . I Senior Edition 1957 McClymonds High School, Oakland, Calif., May 27, 1957 Mr. Ellsworth It seems strange to be writing an article for the Senior Issue of the Record after having been on the production end for so many years. Seriously, 'I have not had the chance to meet too many members of the class of june, l957, in my Ofiiee this year in any sort of official capacity, for virtually all of the things that you have done for at least most of themj have been good things. You have proved yourselves to be loyal and worthy Mackitesi. In the years to come, come back to Maek and let us hear of your future triumplisg but above all else, heed this one admonition: Keep up the good fight, forge ahead con- stantly. and settle only for the best that is in you. All of you Mackites remember the Spirit Hag motto: We Will Do It! That's your promise to us. Ted Ellsworth Mrs. Drew Farewell to these three years at McClymonds-the good times, the bad times, the successes, the disap- pointments, the fun, and the tears. -all these bring new challenges and greater responsibilities than most of you have ever known. You will be ready to meet them. You are not just ordinary boys and girls. You are young men and women, mem- bers of a select group who hnished what you started. Two hundred and seventy-two entered McClymonds in September, 1054. You are the 130 who will get your diplomas. Gretchen K. Drew .-A he ' A Senior Poem By James Dorn Parting brings sorrow it's true, But it's one of the things in life we must do. Through the struggles have been pretty rough, Mr. Elwood V. Doc Hess And our trials have been pretty tough. VVe've enjoyed our stay here at Mack, And the sweet memories which we have endowed, Can't help but almost always come back. We give thanks to Mr. Hess, Mr. Ellsworth, and Mrs. Drew, And to our counselors for helping us through. We've all had our troubles and Mr. Hess To H12 Mackites: June 14, your graduation day, is rapidly drawing near. As you think about it you probly will have mixed emotions, you'll be happy and proud that three years of hard work is almost over and for most of you they have been happy, successful years. I Vou'll be just a little sad too. You'll be leaving McClyn1onds, a school you love and are proud of. This l know because of your friend- liness and fine things you have done for your school. ' I want to remind you once more that you are graduating from The School of Champions on the field, of champions in the classroom, and champions in culture, refinement, and dignity. You are going out into a world that wants you and needs you. Many line opportunities will await you. Make the best of them. Don't hesitate, go straight ahead. There is only one path to success. To reach the top you will need determination, hard work, and will have to stick to whatever you start. Remember our motto. We Will Do lt. Good luck, and I'll miss each of you very much. Your friend Doc, stress, But it seems that they always knew what was best. Our teachers were all so very sweet and nice, So to them we give our thanks, For enduring our most vicious pranks. .1 4-be 4. , - ' - 53 'A 1 r elf' t. x' is . get We 1- .fi..:. iif4'e T-ling 'Tf3'r'i ' .. . . H12 Counselor Miss Ruih Anderson The time has come for the coun- selors to write a message of farewell to the senior class. We do so with mixed feelings of pride and regret. We are very proud that you are successfully completing your course of study here at McClymonds and are about to graduate. It is always difficult to say goodbye to friends and you are our friends. The future holds great promise for the youth of our country and we 'believe that you are prepared to meet that chal- lenge. ' Personally, I have been very proud of you. Some have achieved in athletics, some in scholarship, Others have held positions of re- sponsibility in our student body. Each has left a record in the annals of our school that will long be re- membered. As you go forth into the world, may success crown your achieve- ments. For many of us, going to college will be our next step, for others, the Armed Forces, and still others, the job. When we entered the foyer of the school in September, 1954, we thought it would be a long time before we would be marching down the aisles of the auditorium, uniformed in our caps and gowns. After our three years of hard work, the time has finally arrivedj Although some of us had ups and downs, we hitched our wagon to a star and fought our way through, and now we are about to receive those precious sheepskins. L We'll forever remember McClymonds: the friends, the les- sons, the teachers, the activities, and the fun. Memories of McClymonds will never fade from our hearts, they will for- ever recall fondly our dear old Alma Mater ........ Farewell. The .lune Graduates of l957 4 A , ,ya ,Mfg at .KK V J J 4,v 1.
