The second ship in the FF-1037 class, USS McCLOY was built in Avondale Shipyards, Louisiana, and commissioned in Charleston, South Carolina on 21 Og. tober 1963. She is named for Lieutenant Commander John McCloy, who was awarded the Medal of Honor twice during his naval career. His first award came as 3 result of his participation in the landing force that attempted relief of Peking, during the Boxer Rebellion. He received his second award for valor during the occupation of Vera Cruz in 1914. The ship's crest of white stars on a blue field and motto Above and Beyond signify the coloring of the Medal of Honor and requisites for its achievement: conspicuous gallantry above and beyond the call of duty. After commissioning, USS McCLOY reported to her homeport, Newport, Rhode Island. Since then, she has played a major role in testing and evaluating state-of-the- art Anti-Submarine Warfare QASWJ sensors and weapons systems and has become the premier US Naval combatant participating in law enforcement operations. Although the ship continues to operate primarily in an ASW role during NATO and fleet exercises, she has found great success in supporting the US Coast Guard's Caribbean law enforcement efforts. Over the course of three employments in this role from November 1986 through September 1987 McCLOY has distinguished herself b Y making four seizures, the most by any US Naval combatant For th ' . ese superior accomplishments, the ship and her crew received the Coast Guard Meritorious Unit Commendation, presented by COMMANDER COAST GUARD DISTRICT SEVEN There are many newer and larger ships in the United States Nav but none ' y more dedicated in the service of their country. McCLOY and her crew have continued to live u to th ' ' ' p eir motto, Above and Beyond in their quarter of a century with the Atlantic Fleet. 64
