Saunders, Russell Tate, John Nardo, David Spencer, Ralph Hutchinson. Coach Nardo presents trophy for best back to Stan Worlen and Cecil Davis, who tied for the award. 84 FO0T Captain George Morris and Alternate Captain Buddy Browder calling the toss Coach Johnny Nardo's 1951 Tornado will never be forgotten at McCallie. This powerful squad held their opponents to approximately one touchdown per game and less than one hundred yards rushing in an over-all average. The boys, who came back September first for early prac- tice, were rewarded with the Mid-South C am- pionship. Led by Captain George Morris and Alternate Captain Buddy Browder, the team showed lasting spirit and fight while they walked away with many honors. Cecil Davis, Blue half- back, led the city scoring parade with 91 points while Stan Worlen, his running mate, was close behind him. Five Tornado grid standouts were honored by being selected on the Chattanooga Times All- City prep team. They were: Buddy Browder, Hugh Eichelberger, Larry Bradford, Cecil Davis, and Stan Worlen. The team record was eight wins, with one tie, against no losses, the best record at McCallie in over ten years. McCallie 183 Notre Dame 6 The Blue Tornado captured its lid-lifter from the Notre Dame Greenies by the convincing score of 18-6. In a stands-packing game which was rated as a toss-up for weeks before the kick- off, the untested Blues downed a strong Irish squad sparked by a full team of post graduates. R L Z Cecil Davis started the scoring from the one- yard line after Stan Worlen had twisted 68 yards on a punt return to set up the score. The Greenies showed strength early in the game, but McCallie used a combination of box and T plays in an attempt to catch the Notre Dame line napping. Thus, after the Irish had tied the score at 6 all, the Tornado began to outplay the hard fighting Irish who had expected only box formation offense. Cecil Davis, on a mouse-trap play, scored the second McCallie touchdown in the second quar- ter. The score remained the same with McCallie ahead, 12-6 until, with eight minutes remaining, Mike McAdams crashed over from the one. A creditable showing was made by Jim Hud- low who was at all times cool in his punting role. Especially helpful were his punts that rolled out of bounds inside the Notre Dame five despite the rain-soaked ball. McCallie 523 S.M.A. 6 Scoring in almost every conceivable way the Tornado rolled over the cadets from Sewanee Military Academy, 52-6. The game, played on Patten Field, gave Cecil Davis two more touch- downs, but Stan Worlen led the scoring with THE ENDS Kyle Testerman, Charlie Huff, Budy Browder, Wayne Miller. three 6-pointers before the meatball squad took over to give the boys a rest. Sewanee's score came against the fourth string, but Dee Hardin quickly made amends for the meatballs when he stole the ball from an S.M.A. back and galloped 36 yards for a touch- down. Penalties were heavy with McCallie los- ing 115 yards by rule of the referees. McCallie 323 C.M.A. 0 On the road the Tornado continued to roll as they took their third conference victory from an outclassed C.M.A. squad, 32-0. As in the pre- vious contests Stan Worlen and Cecil Davis were the big guns for McCallie. On the very first play of the contest, Worlen took a hand-off on an off tackle quickie and raced 70 yards to pay dirt without being touched. Early in the first quarter a McCallie fumble on the 15 set up Columbia's only scoring oppor- tunity, but a rugged McCallie line set them back sharply, and they were held for downs. The hard playing Tornado really began to roll in the sec- ond quarter and amassed over 150 yards rushing behind crushing down field blocking. Toward the half, Cecil Davis suffered a broken blood vessel in his foot in a head on collission with a C.M.A. man and was helped from the field. T Cole ploughs through the mud to score against Murfreesboro. THE CHEERLEADERS Howard Bumgardner, Joel Blackford, Henry Bond, Robert McGregor, Tom McCallie, Whitney Colburn. McCallie 425 City 13 Swirling to their fourth consecutive victory, the Blue Tornado rolled past City High, 42-13. Led by the swivel-hipped racer, Cecil Davis, who scored three touchdowns, the Blue men rolled at will after they Hnally began to move as City offered unusual resistance for most of the first period. Once the Tornado began to swirl it was easy to predict the outcome of the fray as Cecil Davis waltzed across the twin stripes for three six-pointers on runs of 13, 28, and 15 yards. These dashes helped raise Davis on the year's scoring parade into a tie for second place in the city. Thornton Cole chipped in with his two big touchdowns to give McCallie an increasing lead, and Ashton Therrel produced the other on an 11-yard thrust through the center of the line as the Blue meatballs saw much action. McCallie 323 Murfreesboro 7 Though the rain presented quite a problem, the mud-covered McCallie men seemed to have that extra punch to get over the opening hump. Rated as the top team in the state, the Tornado, playing on Patten Field, shellacked last year's state champs by 32-7. After a much contended battle for the most yards, Thornton Cole finally THE TACKLES Frank Toothaker, George Morris, Hugh Eichelberger, Buddy Wellman. 87 THE BACKS Tomy Ayres, Thornton Cole, Stan Worlen, Ed Loughlin. broke the ice for McCallie and the score re- mained 7-0 until late in the second quarter Mike McAdams carried the ball for a McCallie touch- down and 14-0 lead. With Davis, Tommy Ayres, T. Cole and McAdams eating up yardage and the Blue line opening huge holes, McCallie hit their old stride in the second half with t'Nub Cole accounting for three. McCallie 315 K.M.I. 7 Playing in the coldest football weather of the season, the red hot Tornado continued its blis- tering pace by downing a strong Kentucky Mili- tary Institute team by the convincing margin of 31 to 7. Paced by a hard-charging line and a Covey of Cecil Davis injured as he sets up a TD against Darlington. The McCallie Cheering Section-Finest in Town. fleet backs that wouldn't be denied, the Blue after a shake start on defense, scored in eight plays covering 63 yards. The Blue piled up three six-pointers in the first quarter adding the others during the third quarter. McCallie 13g G.M.A. 13 Playing by far their best game of the season, G.M.A.'s upset-minded team came through to THE BACKS Mike McAdams, Jimmy Hudlow, Cecil Davis, Bob Bridgman. The Tornado rolls against T.M.I. hold the powerful Blue Tornado to a 13-13 count in Atlanta. Playing before a packed house on the Georgians' home Held, the teams treated the crowds to some of the best blocking ever run in those parts. Both teams were sharp. Two touchdowns run by McCallie men were called back by penalties, and one G.M.A. touch- down came as a direct result of a pass interfer- ence penalty against McCallie. McCallie 563 T.M.I. 0 In the T.M.I. tilt the varsity squad found a breather as the HBH boys did most of the work. As the score indicates, the cadets were com- pletely out manned, but showed stubborn deter- mination to the last whistle. Stan Worlen scored three times to become third from the top in the city-wide scoring parade. Line play was excel- lent with Eichelberger, Morris, Browder, and Huff stopping every attempt. McCallie 273 Darlington 7 A quartet of Tornado backs, cleared by crisp blocking in the line, ran wild in Rome, Georgia, to give McCallie its first Mid-South flag since The trainers work to get Davis back in against Darlington. Stan, the Man, puts McCallie close to pay dirt in opening minutes of Darlington game. CENTER AND GUARDS Hubert Clemmer, Tommy Raulston, Larry Bradford, Lewis Fowler, Blaton Smith. A Blue runner in the clear against T.M.I. it 1948. Cecil Davis, Thornton Cole, Stan Worlen, and Jim Hudlow scored for the Blue. Cole set up Worlen's 2-yard plunge with a pass interception. Hudlow's tally came on an intercepted pass also. In an afternoon worked by fierce play on both sides, McCallie's line turned in an especially noteworthy performance. Guards Lewis Fowler, Tommy Raulston, and center Larry Bradford not only held the center of the line air-tight, but kept the Tiger center continually off balance. Undoubtedly when looking back over the sea- son one decides the- spirit did it. BA KETBALL The 1952 edition of the McCallie Blue Tornado basketball team again had a very successful term. In the Mid-South Tournament, held in the Davenport Gymnasium, they lost to Castle Heights, 46-51, in the semi-finals, but bounced back to beat Baylor for third place the same night, 38-36, on Tommy Ayres' two foul shots in an overtime period. Kyle Testerman was named on the second All-Tournament team. Kyle set two records during the season, having a total of 458 points and a single game total of 32. The team, led by Coach Russ Tate, compiled a total of 17 wins against 9 losses for a percent- age of 554. They scored 1298 points for an aver- age of 49.8 points per game and had the distinc- tion of beating each team they played at least once. The team was moulded around four return- ing lettermen: Captain Buddy Browder, Alter- nate Captain Cecil Davis, Jim Ensign, and Thornton Cole. Led by Stan Worlen, the team dropped its first game of the season to C.lVl.A., 43-64. Undaunted by this loss, they bounced back the next day to down City, 51-39, with Kyle Testerman basketing 20 points. Next came the Times Cup Series in which the Tornado placed second behind Notre Dame. In the opening game, led by Stan Worlen's 14 points, they conquered S.M.A., 55-40. On the following night, the Blues fell prey to a strong combination from Notre Dame, 57-47. Kyle Tes- terman and Buddy Browder were outstanding for McCallie with 15 and 14 points, respectively. In the first game after the Christmas holidays, the Tornado avenged its loss to Notre Dame by subduing the Greenies in the Davenport gym, 56-37. The game was highlighted by the spar- kling play of Kyle Testerman who pushed through a record total of 32 points. Four nights later, the team ventured to S.M.A. and downed the Tigers, 55-41. On the following week-end the Blues were upset by G.M.A. at College Park by 51-52. Ed Lough1in's outstanding floor play was tops for the Tornado. On the way home Captain Tate's boys stopped by Darlington and dropped the Tigers, 45-41. Buddy turned in an excellent performance, hogging almost all the rebounds. CAPTAIN BUDDY BROWVDER ALT. CAPT. Tom Ayres was outstanding for the home team. Bouncing back the next night, the Tornado dropped Central, 35-32, as the second string, led by Jim Ensign, Wayne Miller, Don Williams and Howard Bumgardner, played the second half and completely outmanned their opponents. The team had five players to score over one hundred points in the season. They were Ply- ler, Capt. Dantzler, Clemmer and King. And they had one player who scored the astonish- ing number of 234 points in Dee Hardin. In 21 games they won 19 and lost 2. Captain Sam Campbell, the Tornado soccer team was composed of only a few returning lettermen and a large number of inexperienced boys, but Coach R. L. Mc- Callie did a grand job in molding this group into a winning combination. Even though the record compiled by this team was not the most outstanding one in the Mid-South, nev- erthless at the end of the season, McCallie was feared as much as any team in the conference. The first game of the season was played at Lebanon. Tennessee, against Castle Heights, and the Blues got off to a jittery start. Half of the first team was playing its first game of varsity ball, and they naturally made mistakes. The experienced Castle Heights team downed the fighting Tornado bv the score of 7 to 0, but much needed experience was gained. On January 28th, the team jou1'ne:yed to Rome to meet the Darlington Tigers and played a ne game while losing to the Tigers by the score of 3 to 2. There was a marked improvement in the playing over the game of the previous week. Dan Crates played an exceptionally fine game, kick- ing both goals and handling the ball expertly. Castle Heights came to Alumni Field for a return game, and it was a close contest all the way, Heights scoring the only goal of the game in the third quarter. Quinn Calla- way played an outstanding game at goalie, and the entire team showed more balance than in previous games. Crates again showed skill in handling the ball, and Tad Johnston a.so turned in a fine game. After the three defeats, two of them heartbreakers, the Tornado men were hungry for victory in their next game. which happened to be with Baylor. The confident Red Raiders had some wind taken -out of their sails to the tune of 1 to O. Smith Murray, subbing for Gordon Darnell, who had been knocked out in the opening seconds of the game. played by far his best game of the season. With the score tied at nothing to nothing in the last nuarter, Murray kicked the only goal of the day, to give the Blue its first taste of victory. Tommy Ferguson and Bill Hall played heads up ball, and Paul Steward, playing in his first var- sity game, did a splendid job. On a trip to Asheville the following week-end. the Blue again played heads-up ball and won by the score of 2 to 1. Dan Crates did the scoring for the Blue, making good two free kicks. Coach McCallie was well pleased by the show- ing of the entire team. The next game was with Baylor on their field. and with Johnston and McGregor back in the line-up after a brief illness, the Tornado looked for a victory. However. Baylor fought with everything they had and defeated the Blue by the score of 2 to 1. Dan Crates again kicked McCallie's only goal, and Johnston, Fowler. McGregor, and Darnell played a fine game, fighting to the Final whistle. In the final game of the season, held on Alumni Field, the Tornado defeated Darlington by the score of 3 to 1. Every boy on the team had revenge on his mind, and their inspired play showed it. The Tigers were swept off their feet by the great playing of the entire team. This was a good ending to a season which had been rather disappoint- ing to the members of the team. L. McCallie. for their splen- did comeback after the slow start they had. Next year the team will be under the leadership of two co-captains, Tad Johnston and Dan Crates. Both of these boys are experienced players, and they should lead the team to a fine season. There will be a good group of returning lettermen next year, and a very good team is expected. SWIIWMI Although lacking indoor facilities of its own, the 1952 McCallie swimming team turned in a creditable record under the tutelage of Coach Ed Lundien and Co-Captains Scrappy Moore and John Edwards. Opening the season on February 12, Tornado tank- men journeyed to Lebanon where they lost to strong Castle Heights, 49-26. Although the team lost, there were several bright notes for the Blue. Scrappy Moore splashed his way to a new 50 yard freestyle record of 25.8 seconds, and John Edwards swam the 100 yard breaststroke in 1.18, just three seconds short of the school record of 1.15. David Moore placed in the backstroke, and Langston Holland and Joel An- derson scored in the distance events. On the three succeeding Saturdays the team lost to CMA, 55-43, SMA, 54-20, and CMA again, 42-37. Scrappy Moore continued to carry the load in the freestyle dashes while David Moore, his brother, and Bob Dedman held down the backstroke events. Johnny Adamson, a newcomer, turned in several ex- cellent 150 yard individual medleys. George Putnam was the lone diver on the team, and his performance aided the Blues immensely on several occasions. The season was culminated with the annual Mid- South Swimming meet at Emory University in At- lanta. Here the Tornado turned in a magnificent per- formance, determined to succeed. Scrappy Moore started it off in the 50 yard freestyle by breaking his own record with a new time of 25.3 seconds to clinch second place. Then the freestyle relay team, com- posed of Scrappy Moore, David Moore, Langston Holland and Dan Rather, set a new school record, swimming the 200 yard distance in 1:46.3. Bobby Ded- man, Billy Garrett, and Johnny Adamson in swim- ming the Medley Relay, placed fourth. This gave the Blue a total of 20 points and fourth place in a Held of five. Although they didn't capture the first-place trophy, they certainly came through in the traditional McCallie spirit from start to finish. THE 1952 SWIMMING TEAM Kneeling: Dedman, J. Un- der the tutelage of Coach Russ Tate the cinder- men also placed a close second to Baylor in the Baylor Relays, falling short of the crown by only one point. The Blues opened their season by defeating St. Andrews at McCallie on March 28. Thornton Cole was high-point man for McCallie, with 15 points, scoring firsts in the 100 and 440 yard dashes. Cecil Davis and George Dowdy followed with 12 and 11 points, respectively. It was an all McCallie finish in the shot put, with Browder, Dowdy, and Hunnicutt placing in that order. Dowdy also copped first position in the discus, with Bob Allison and Buddy Browder running a close second and third. In the high jump Frank Taylor and Cecil Davis found themselves in a three-way tie with Bill Yarborough of the Saints, at 5 ft. 4 in. Bill Roberts dashed his way to first place in the 880 yard run with Billy Thompson and Charles Lloyd a close second and third, re- spectively. The 880 yard relay was won by a McCallie combination consisting of Bruce Cleve- land, Raymond Walker, Jimmy Vann, and Tom- my Ferguson. In the Baylor Relays, the Red Raiders main- tained a comfortable lead throughout the meet up until the two concluding events. The Blues, however, began to close in as the tourney prog- ressed. As Saturday wore on, the Blues began to reach out on the Raiders, but failed to close the gap between them. When the meet ended, McCallie was third behind Baylor and Darlington in that order. All in all the Blues turned in a creditable sea- son. With a total of three triumphs out of four starts, a second in the Baylor Relays, a third in the Mid-South, and three new school records set by members of the 1952 squad, this year's ag- gregation is to be praised for its splendid per- formance. Others on the team were Peter Steward, Rufus Sherrill, Neil Taylor, and Malcolm Williams. All of the netmen tumed in successful seasons with Ted Car- ley winning nine matches which was the biggest total. The Tornado's first match was with St. Andres, and McCallie won, 9-0. The next two matches were with SMA and Darlington in that order: the team won over SMA by a score of 5-3 and beat Darlington, 6-3. An- other 9-0 score was turned in when McCallie beat GMA. The first defeat came from Baylor on their campus by a score of 7-1. but the netmen immediately bounced back into the winner's circle by beating Darlington, 4-2. This was followed bv a second defeat, this time at the hands of MBA. Again the team came back and beat Coach Bob Wood's team from Sewanee, 6-2, and they followed that win with still another one over TMI. A second time Baylor stopped Mc- Callie by a wide margin between the two scores, but Castle Heights fell beneath us by 5-2. BA EBAZZ The 1952 version of the Blue Tornado diamond contin- gent enjoyed a season which, although it won no cham- pionship, compiled a good won and lost record and showed high spirit in every game. Led by the batting of Ed Loughlin f.412l, Gene Robbins f.343J, and Lewis Fowler 13423, the Blues won eight games and lost five. An early season encounter with Central was dropped by the close score of 4-3. The Tornado got away to a fast start, winning four of their first six games. After losing to Darlington, 4-2, de- spite the pitching of Ed Loughlin and Dee Hardin's home run, the team came back to down Notre Dame by 4-1 be- hind Loughlin and then overpower Georgia Military Acad- emy in two games, 9-8 and 4-2, winning on the heavy hit- ting of Lewis Fowler and Scrappy Smith, and also the tight pitching of Ed Healan and John Lewallen. Continuing the string of wins. Healan again came through on the mound edging Sewanee Military Academy by 6-5, the winning run scoring on Bunny Perkinson's infield hit in the final inning. Following this inspiring victory, the team traveled to Riverside, where they split a double-header, losing the initial encounter by 7-6 and winning the final by 6-1. Cap- tain Jim Ensign turned in a fine six-hit pitching perform- ance in the contest. Next the Tornado staved off a last inning rally by Notre Dame to win behind Loughlin, 8-5, with the help of a tremendous home run by Lewis Fowler, as well as a long triple and single in four times at bat. Journeying to Columbia Military Academy with high hopes and a 6-2 won-lost record, McCallie was dealt a CAPTAIN JIM ENSIGN LEWIS FOWLER ED LOUGHLIN ED HEALAN SCRAPPY SMITH 112 N V one HARDIN L BUNNY PERKINSON GENE ROBBINS JOHN LEWALLEN JIMMY HUDLOW severe blow by a twin defeat at the hands of Columbia, 6-5 and 4-1. The team was hampered by Ed Loughlin's ab- sence in this series. By losing again to Darlington, 10-3, championship chances vanished, but the season was closed out in fine style with successive wins over Castle Heights and Sewanee Military Academy. The former featured Loughlin's home run, triple and single and three-hit pitch- ing by Jim Ensign. The latter contest sparkled with good pitching and hitting by Healan. All through the season fine leadership was provided by coaches Dave Spencer and B. J. Saunders and Captain Jim Ensign, who, when not playing a superb game at first base, was lending his good left arm to the success of the pitching department. Throughout the schedule of games, Coach Spencer encouraged the boys and brought out the best in everyone. Dee Hardin supplied fancy glove work at shortstop and slapped out timely base hits. Bobby Wheeler was a prom- ising fielder at third, and Bunny Perkinson, Mike McAd- ams, Lewis Fowler, and Ed Loughlin furnished adequate outfield protection. Gene Robbins sparkled at bat and field- ed well at second, and Jimmy Hudlow performed capably at both third and second in a reserve status. Fine catching was supplied by Scrappy Smith. Altogether it was a successful season, and great prom- ise is held for next year, as four of the regulars are return- ing with a good year's experience under their belts. At a final meeting of the baseball team, Scrappy Smith was elected captain and Dee Hardin alternate-captain of the 1953 squad.
