THE FUTURE -- 3840, 000 ANSWER TO MAYFIELD ELEMENTARY SCHOOL 'PUPIL BOOM'
16 Classrooms and a "CAFETORlUM" Feature Modernistic Building
On December 10, 1957, the voters approved the proposition for a new school which we hope
will be ready in the fall of 1959.
The new institution will contain sixteen classrooms, including four kindergartens and three
classrooms for each of Grades 1,2,3, and 4. ln addition a cafetorium will combine an auditorium
and a cafeteria. Other rooms include a gym, health rooms, offices, kitchen, janitor's storage,
boiler room, and teachers' quarters.
Some four hundred fifty pupils from kindergarten to fourth grade will attend the new school.
The faculty and staff will number seventeen. There are at present forty-five teachers and staff
members in the Mayfield Central School with James W. Smithers as Supervising Principal.
The present school, now bursting with all grades, will remain in use for students of grades
five, six, junior and senior high, or grades five through twelve. The Mayfield Central District
e mb ra c e s an ar e a bounded on the north by Sw'eet's Crossing, on the south by the town of
Progress, on the west by Easterly and Phelps Street, and on the east by the Kennyetto Creek.
One of the important features of the new building will be that the central core will be
sufficient for future expansion. The enrollment of the present school is one thousand pupils
with an anticipated increase up to one thousand two hundred andfiftyby 1965. During the past
few years the enrollment has increased steadily at an average rate of forty per year. The
district operates seven buses, all of which makes two trips both morning and afternoon. The
busses travel three hundred miles a day and transport eight hundred and forty children both
in the morning and afternoon.
