MQ, -C THE IOURNALISM CLUB OF MAUMEE HIGH SCHOOL PRESENTS Y 1 1 Y i-IE lf!!! IEFLECIVI LOWELL GALLAWAY Editor GEORGE BUANNIC Business Manager Nothing is more satisfying than remembering. With this in mind the Reflector Staff proudly presents the I9-47 annual. Photographs, drawings and prose are here to assist you in recalling your years at Maumee High School. CUIITEIITS FHGULTV STUDEIITS GLUBS TEIIIIIS HDUERTISEIIIEIITS DEDICIITIUII lt is to Marion L. Lawrence that the 1947 Reflector is proudly dedicated. Mr. Lawrence retired this year after thirty years of active teaching. During these years, twenty of which were spent in Maumee, Mr. Lawrence proved himself an able science teach- er. At one time, he was superintend- ent and principal at Monclova and principal at Bolinvar. His congenial personality and willingness to assist will long be remembered. 1 u V34 1f,,4 W wi- Eff' I ii ' A-- -1 4 A 'S -my .J C v , P' 'QW .575 ' 'fy 1? ' f A , gd ,af A ll! I. Athletics was their strong point. They had a large representation on the foot- ball, basketball, baseball, and track squads. Other talents were not lacking either as seniors were well represented in the choir, both glee clubs and in dramatic productions. With their funds low because of the expenses incurred while juniors, the seniors sponsored several activities to replenish their funds. They held a dance after the Perrysburg game and in the spring, sponsored the annual Senior Prom. Both of these dances proved to be successful. On May 27, the seniors will receive their diplomas and climax their high school careers. Sophomore events began with the sponsoring of a dance after the Clay football game in October. Ring measurements were taken this year and we suddenly realized we were moving up the ladder of classes pretty fast. The B squad basketball team was sparked by several of our boys. The B squad cheerleaders were all sophomore girls. Our leadership and responsibili- ties in school events seem to come naturally as we are now upper-classmen. EIGHTH GRHDE Due to the study of parliamentary procedure, a great improvement was noted in conducting class meetings in the eighth grade this year. With the help of Miss Rech, our advisor, the class drew up a con- stitution. At the end of the first semester, Bill Bryan, the class president, moved. He was replaced by Truman Rhineholt, vice-president. Dick Metcalf was elected to be the new vice-president. A picnic and dance held later in the year consti- tuted the social program for the class. The student congress has really accomplished quite a few things this year. The suggestion box has been put back in its regular place. Students have been appointed to attend mass meetings of all student representatives at Libbey High School. ln February the hard work put into the traditional student talent show did not prove fruitless. Parliamentary procedure has been developed to a fine point. Meetings were held every two weeks. Representatives to this group were elected by the students. Under the able direction of Mr. David Jones, the Maumee High School band added gay spirit to all the football and basketball games this year. With the snappy cadence setting the tempo, the majorettes Mary Black, Carlee, Holscher, Carolyn Hughes, and Virginia Fauble led the band thro'ugh many formations. The band did a grand job of representing Maumee High in the five-school spring festival. Many of our band members were On Stage with Purple and Gold, mixing in with the varied colors of the uniforms. The Y-Teen is new in name only this year to Maumee High. Formerly known as the Girl Reserves, the Y-Teens were busy in many school activities. A dance was sponsored early in the year, and the Christmas and Easter programs were both planned by the Y-Teens. Membership to this club is limited to the junior and senior girls selected for their fine Personal character. The girls who presided over the meetings were: Carol Jones, president, Jean Stewart, vice-president, Nancy DeBrock, secretary, and Martha Lou Robison, treasurer. Miss Druholt is their advisor. D The board of the Girls' Athletic Association is composed of the officers of the club and the individual sports leaders. Since the membership of the G.A.A. is not limited in the upper four grades, it is necessary to have a board to govern the group. Miss Farrell is the faculty advisor with Joan Miller presiding as president. Roseanna Wingerd was elected vice-president, Sally Jordan, secretary, and Jean Lawrence, treasurer. UI5UIll ED. ClUB fi. The duties of the members include showing educational films to classes and showing noon movies to the student body. The trend to educate with films has made the work of this group more important. Our school has a lot of fine equipment and the student operators have done a good job of operating it. Mr. Herbert is club advisor. The Panthers, playing their first 'season under Coach Conrad since his return from the navy, compiled an excellent record of 6 wins and 3 losses. Operating from the cock- eyed T formation, the Panthers featured a well balanced ground and air attack that enabled them to roll over Sylvania, Ross- ford, Perrysburg, Swanton, Delta, and Wau- seon, while bowing to Clay, Whitmer, and Perrysburg. They seem to keep quite busy the year around. Field hockey is a very popular sport with the girls. They enjoyed playing a game with Maumee Valley Country Day School and topped the day off with refreshments. A tournament was held between the different classes and after a hard battle, the juniors came out on top. At the end of the hockey season, o partywas held for all of the girls who came out for hockey during the year. Another favorite sport is basketball. Johnson's freshman team was the victor in the class tournament this year. The season was climaxed with a game with Maumee Valley. Individual sports for the girls at Maumee covers a very broad and interest- ing field. Among them are archery, ping pong, badminton, and shuffle board. The girls earn letters when they come out for a sport a certain number of times. Miss Nancy Farrell is the girls' Physical Education Director and is super- visor in these activities. H Y .
