Through the efforts of many at present and in the past we continued to relive that spirit for which we are known. And so we began a year with hope of success, being determined by an act, a com- mitment to our- selves and our fellow students. You might say a cheer given freely to one anotlier. This would largely determine our growth in His graces. t i We smiled at one another, found ex- citement at rallies games, found frus- tration in studying algebra history, laugh- ter in poster parties and tranquility and peace in the chapel where the Blessed Sac- rament was ours to receive. 1 • ■■ .Ji ' - MJmMBi ■S ' - m :g.-J T ' j -j • - - ' -« iTL.ujna M Bm t c n gM|fHH m r J if A unique char- acter had been formed throughout 9 months of school. All the times we ' ve met you Lord, We recall again. Now we wish to show our love, Through gifts we make it known, Take what we bring, make us your own. . . Like the dew that carpets dawn. Your love for us pervades the morn. And meets us at each corner. In each smile; And though it lingers through the day, Our minds will burn and drift away. So, here we come to think, and to recall. . . To touch our hearts and make them feel That all the love you claim is real, You sent your Son, In laughter and in tears. But he not only talked, he died. His bruises showed the love inside. And through our gifts, The love we feel appears. 13 ■ w H K H - ' H im HSK HF ' nMH i  ?.WP ' t t - ' ;t| • . v I ' S W '  - ' i flOflk Hom 130 -fl3TA I ' ti cflfTTWtSftl?H2 BIUUUIM Hierarchy His Excellency The Most Reverend Timothy Manning, D.D. , J.C.D. Dear Cardinal Manning, As you continue your position as Archbishop of Los Angeles with the added dignity of Cardinal, we ask that God ' s blessings be bestowed upon you for the tasks that lie ahead. To follow so closely the teachings and examples of Our Lord is truly the greatest work a man can accomplishf and you have excelled in your every effort to bring us closer to our eternal reward. Your faith and liope in us is a tremendous gift to us all. Our sincerest congratulations and best wishes to you as you are given this highest honor. God bless you always. Striving to know, love and serve Him, The faculty and students of Mater Dei High School. 16 II lokiiso m Nothing is lost upon the man who is bent upon growth; nothing is wasted on one who is always preparing for his work and his life by keeping eyes, mind, and heart open to nature, men, books, experience. Such a man finds ministers to his education on all sides; everything co-operates with his passion for growth. -H. Mabie I I I I Left to Right: His Eminence Timothy Cardinal Manning, D.D., J.C.D.; Most Re erend Juan Arzube, D.D. ; Most Reverend William Johnson, D.D., A.C.S.W,; and Most Reverend John J. Ward, D.D., J.C.L. 17 My dear graduates: The earth has yielded its fruits; God, our God, has blessed us. May God bless us and may all the ends of the earth fear Him, - Ps. 67, Vs. 7 8 The harvest in its real meaning is that time when men ' s works are gathered together and the good things are the result of much hard work and many persons ' concern and interest. The summary of the real harvest is this quotation from the Book of Psalms, which is a harvest prayer. As you graduate from Mater Dei, you have completed a work that only you can truly harvest. The truth of learning and of education is based on your firm grasp and practice of the virtues of Wisdom, Understanding, and Knowledge. Since these are gifts of the Holy Spirit, your personal devotion and relationship to tlie Holy Spirit will provide many harvests for you at given points in your life. May God in His goodness always be included in your estimate of vourself and the things that you do. Sincerely in L lirist, ■ I •J Reverend Jerome L. Student council members once again fought apathy trying to get students involved. Students demon- strated the spirit of Mater Dei contributing greatly to stu- dent council ' s various food, clothing, and toy drives, Fr, Ziemann, as moder- ator, worked diligently with officers to make this year a success. Ziemann, moderator, with Mike Amaranthus. 151 ' f; Representatives Section representatives, who com- pose the ' House of Representatives, once again proved to be a most impor- tant part of student council. Besides their section duties, representatives from each section more importantly represented the entire student body, as well as striving for student involvement in council activities. wwmt ' f J Room 202 served as the center for council activities. 153 Homecoming Festivities for Homecoming 1972 began with a stunning victory over St. Anthony. At the game, halftime ceremonies included performances by the band and drill team and a parade of the floats created by the school clubs and classes. Alumni cheer- leaders and songleaders returned to add their enthusiasm to the Monarch spirit. The evening was capped by the presentation of this year ' s court: Sophomore attendant Karen Cook, Junior attendant Mary Beth Cook, Senior attendants Pat Anderson and Darlene Riddle, and Queen Candy Barton, crowned by the 1971 Homecoming queen, Debbie Navarette. 154 155 I Co-ed Days of Future Passed was the theme of Co-ed 1973. It was held at the Tustin Hills Racquet Club, with music provided by C. M. Lord. The highlight of the evening was the crown- ing of John Adams as Co-ed King and George Herold as prince. As the dance ended, students found, regretfully, that another day of their own futures was gone. 156 T N ! Prom r Through the well organized efforts of the dance committees, these Mater Dei students who attended the dances were filled with the traditional Monarch enthusiasm. The students danced to the music of different bands and they also enjoyed the company of their old, as well as new friends. The gatherings provided the students with a feeling of togetherness and a shared spirit. i , 1 A. : w i f ' « ■t .t it: J ' i w ' s ' w vffi, ' 4 H HI )%w%! ii O 158 Dances ■■efafte: 159 Pep Squad 160 J. Under the diligent direc- tion of Mr. Michael Corrigan and Mr. Ted Clark, the parade director, these students spent hours of hard practice every day after school working to please all who listened. After 4 years of dedicated service to the Mater Dei Drill Team, Miss Lynn Davis passed her position as director to Miss Gail Milby. Under Miss Milby ' s instructions, the Drill Team has shown considerable effort and enthusiasm in their routines and helped greatly to contribute to the traditional spirit. 170 Drill Team 171 172 Through the past years the Student Relations has remained an invaluable part of Mater Dei. The year began with a spirit- ed chocolate drive. This was follow- ed by an enthusiastic Thanksgiving drive, where the students collected over 1, 800 cans of food for the needy. After re supplying their cup- boards, the students began again collecting food, clothes, and furniture for the Indians of Yuma. Along with these were carnations, tidings, and individual club drives. Many new and unexpected experi- ences occur during these drives, such as the one Mike Melton received on his trip to Arizona. Like their predecessors the ' 72 Monarchs opened by winning all pre -season games. Some outstanding victories in their streak were the defeat of playoff bound Lakewood and shutting out Long Beach Wilson 28-0. The team lost their first league game to number one ranked St. Paul. However, they came back to win their next three games including a Homecoming victory over St. Anthony, an upset of Bishop Amat, and holding back a final assault by Pius X. They fell victim to our arch rival, Servite, to end another season short of the playoffs. Coach Bob Woods has completed a 48-17-1 record through seven years at Mater Dei. Assisting him was Mr. Marv Bain, Mr. Mark Wiehardt, Mr. John Lawler, and Mr. Tom Carrol. Artie completed his second year as trainer for the team. We thank all the coaches and the team for another great year of football. Big Red Crushed Pre- League Opponents Under the direction of coach Bob Woods the Monarchs went un- defeated in pre -league. The running of Jim Gardea and Mark Stanbra led the Monarchs rushing attack. Steve Martindale supplemented the offense with his effective running and explo- sive aerial attack. While the offense piled up ninety- nine points the de- fense held the opponents to an aver- age of ten points per game. ! m. I eague Competition The Monarchs opened tough league competition with number one St. Paul. M. D. scored first with an impressive march but the extra point failed. Then St. Paul scored and the extra point was successful. After that both defenses went to work. The final score was 7-6. It was a hard loss for the Monarchs. Next came Bishop Amat. Amat had always been a playoff stopper. But this time it was reversed. The Monarchs came away with a victory. The next week was Homecoming and the Big Red rolled over St. Anthony. The following week they took on the vastly improved Warriors of Pius X. The Monarchs played it safe and came away with another victory. Mater Dei was hot. The next week we played Servite, our arch rival. It rained prior to the start of the game but Monarch spirit was sky high. That night nothing went right for the Big Red. The Monarchs were slipping and sliding all over the rain drenched field. The game and the playoffs slipped out of their hands. This year it was Servite who had stopped them from the playoffs. With many excellent players coming back, the next year looks very promising. 6i I m tl - ■ . The team gained much experience and picked up many fine pointers for their roles next year on the varsity football squad. The B ' s put forth great effort, and showed great enthusiasm, for this, we give them first place. Dirk Culver as Defensive End along with Greg Freeman as Offensive Running Back put up a great showing and exemplified the great spirit of the B ' s football squad. The Mater Dei Freshmen team proved to be worthy Monarchs through their fantastic re- cord. Under the direction of Coach Godfrey the team went undefeated in league play. They all worked diligently and through their hard efforts were able to attain the league championship. The Freshmen team showed great promise and will be a definite contender for the title next year. This shows the Junior Varsity team gave everything they had to win their league. We must give much credit to Coach Ickes for his patience and great ability to get the team enthused and ready to go out and win the games. The two players that contributed their time and skills were Jack Dean and Mark Breitfuss. They showed outstanding effort and the desire to become Varsity players and also gave color to the J. V. ' s. The most amazing fact about them is that there were no real superstars , rather, they pulled together as a single unit to achieve success. The Monarch ' s dual meets were highlighted by ever in ' creasing student body interest and brand new, never used before track uniforms. (Thanks, Father Cummingsl) Coach Jim Frost, with his assistants, Stu Brantley, Bob Richardson, and Don Webb, have effectively worked to make Track and Field one of Mater Dei ' s largest and most suc- cessful atheletic teams. ' ii Coaches Jim Frost and Bob Richardson molded a first class cross country team in five months of hard work. Led by captains Tom Herold and Joe Dowling, Mater Dei compiled a total of eight victories and one defeat in dual meet competition. In addition to this fine record, the runners placed first in the Mt. San Antonio College invitational, third in the All Orange County invitational, second in the Angelus League, and qualified for CIF competition. Even with this out- standing record, only six out of thirty-two runners were upper classmen. Mater Dei will be a major cross country power for years to come. Golf Golf is probably the most obscure and misunderstood sport on campus. Having lived out a short existence during the 1950 ' s in- terest in the game had become dormant. It wasn ' t until 1969 that the Royal and Ancient sport was revived. Since then interest has been awakened among some students. But due to a limited budget the teams have had to rely on sea- soned talent. They have been unable to offer an opportunity to de- velop the potential of the inexperienced player, until this year. Now under the supervision of Mr. Bettencourt, the team has use of a driving range two days a week as well as Mesa Verde. The team has improved to the point where there is no weak link and all the players are consistent. Led by captain Mike Jacobs and other returning varsity members Greg Winslow and Dave Brown, the team is competing against three other Angelus League teams and foresees a good season. m • aMiillpgs- ■ i S a ' W ' wM!, G.A.A.
