THE GREEK CONNECTION BERMUDA PARADISE 95 MEMORIES: NOT SOON FORGOTTEN MEMORIES THAT LINGER THROUGH OUR LAUGHTER, JOY AND TEARS I The Tide has changed for the Academy Yacht Club. Through the hard work and determination of the Cadets, the Advisor, and the Administration, the Academy has had its most successful sailing year to date. The Yacht Club had many offshore excursions, including various trips to Newport, Boston, Provincetown, and sails into Buzzards Bay. The Orientation for the first time had a credible year and sailing program. The land that was recently acquired on Herring Pond, provided the access to the pond where all the candidates were given instruction in sailing on the Academys ' thirteen foot sloops by members of the Yacht Club. A good time was had by all. A job well done is a under- statement for the members of the M.M.A.Y.C. John Gronbeck Commodore ■MMMHIlHHBliA Commander Wales Advisor The highlight of activity was centered around the re- cently acquired Ketch Windlass , in which a majority of the Yacht Club members participated in her restora- tion. This work enabled cadets to participate in OP Sail 80, the celebration of Boston ' s 350 Anniversary. The Windlass , that was sailed and was crewed by cadets entered the following events: The Parade of Sail, A Predicted Log Contest around Boston Harbor, and it was a spectator craft to watch the armada of sailing craft pass by the starting line of the Translantic Race. The following quote by John Masefield sums it up,: To go down to the seas again, to the lonely sea and the sky, and all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by . On Saturday, September 6th. the BAY STATE departed from Buzzards Bay on the first leg of the annual training cruise. As the BAY STATE headed for the east end of the canal, so did the forty members of the Varsity Football team. The nucleus of a team which was to be in contention for the New England Football Conference Championship. Left behind to determine the fortunes of the 1980 season were thirty 4th classmen and eight 1st classmen, who had shipped commercially. Four of the eight 1st classmen were John Bandini, Mike Quinn, George Schaab, and Bob Long, all captains elect. It was this unprecedented situation in college football that captured the attention and the hearts of football fans nationwide. The pinnacle of publicity which the Buc ' s received came when Irv Cross of the NFL Today Program (CBS) arrived on campus to do a feature story on M.M.A. and the trials and tribulat ions of its football program. The Buc ' s responded to the CBS visit with an upset win over Nichols College 27 to 26. and by winning five of its first six games. The much awaited return of the BAY STATE occurred on October 20th. At this time it became obvious that not only had the program survived, but that another winning season had been assured. Since football was reinstated in 1973 under the late Rear Admiral Lee Har- rington, the Bucs have achieved six winning seasons out of eight and five consecutive winning seasons. In essence, Buc gridders survived a challenge that perhaps no other program had ever experienced in the history of football! The success of the season can be attributed to every member of the squad-, however, special recognition must go to the 1st class and to this year ' s captains for leading the way. The present first class can look back with fond memories on a 25 and II record, including being an important part of a conference championship team in 1977. BUGS NEVER GIVE UP Because of a delayed cruise which cut well into the soccer season, this years soccer team was comprised predominently of freshman, with a backbone of 4 remaining semiors-, capt. Rick Hurd, Bill Crockan, John MacDonald, and Arty Adier. Although this years Bucs started with a young and limited squad, they managed to take it to the oppisition in a high-spirited manner reflecting the pride of the entire soccer program here at the Academy. The squad kept all of the top teams on the schedule to a respectable I or 2 point difference, which surprised many of the opposition. Against Caost Guard Academy, MAAs rival, the Bucs determination and grit brought them home with an uplift- ing tie. This typifies this teams never give up attitude which the team displayed on the field all season. Although coach Cmdr. Hendy could not be on the field much of the season due to his presidential duties, the team was carried by a fine job of coaching from Cdr. Beninghof. With the return of the training ship also was the return of the remaining 4 seniors Stas Bassich, Bill Hendy, Dave Lahie, and John Palm, along with the underclassmen who joined in to make the team complete for the last 5 games. Special thanks are given to the seniors who gave up their time to come back early and keep the team alive, and to the fresh- man, for whom there would not have been a season. The mo- mentum we leave this team with should carry the Bucs on to many winning seasons. II ECAC CHAMPS The 1980-81 Buc Basketball squad was once again the author of numerous firsts in MMA hoop history. For the third year in a row. Coach Skip Thompson ' s squad improved upon the previous season ' s record. Led by all-everything Sr. guard Mark Dumais and power foward Ed Slein, the Sues emerged as co-champions of the Mass. State College Conference. Dumais ended his brilliant career on Taylor ' s Point with 2,223 points, the number 15 that Mark wore will be officially retired by the Academy. Following an impressive 18-7 overall record, the Buc ' s were invited to the ECAC Division III tourney in Hartford, CT. The Buc ' s downed third seeded Amherst College, and went on to play Trinity in the final. MMA, lead by one of the most outstanding freshman in the nation, emerged as the 1981 ECAC Division III Champi- ons by virtue of a 68-66 decision. Rychlec was unstoppable as he dominated the middle and scored 30 points. This win gave the Buc ' s a 20-7 overall record and firmly established them as a New England power. The Buc ' s took first place at the Division III New England Wrestling Championships held at Wesleyan Un.. This was a very rewarding victory after a season which, plaqued with injuries, got off to a very slow start. Comeing back from the Christmas break the Buc ' s headed down to New Jersey for the Viking Invit. Tourn. held at Upsala Un.. The Buc ' s came home victorious. They had captured the 1 spot in an area renowned for it ' s top quality wrestling. In Febuary the team went down to the Division III New England Wrestling Championships as underdogs. They were picked to place third in a 25 team roster. Eight out of ten Buc wrestlers placed in the top six. Taking first in their weight classes were Bill Hofer (190) and Co-Captian shawn Byrnes (167). Finish- ing second was Co- Captian Rich Deveaney (126). Finishing fourth were Gary Bennett (134), Steve Mclarney (143), Chis Losordo (150), and Scott Bateman (158). Rich Felicetta rounded out the scoring, finishing sixth at 177. The two racing seasons, fall and spring, provide the team with over 40 meets a year. Our sailors compete in both intercollegiatge and open regattas, from Maryland to Maine. Practices are held at Herring Pond using MMA ' s fleet of ten O ' Day D ' s. With the advent of the new boathouse facility at the pond, the team is hoping for a newer fleet of more competitive two-man dighies. Six La- sers and technically superior one-man digh- ies, privately owned by team members pro- vide excellent training in boat speed and racing tactics. These Lasers have been cam- paigned heavily over the past year all along the New England seaboard. The individual efforts by a number of the team members in their independently maintained Lasers have produced gold-winning results for MMA. After this fine start the Bucs had their ups and downs but the biggest and best win was a sweep over North Adams State. The victory marked the third time in 18 attempts that the Bucs have beaten North Adams. Outstanding performances by freshmen John McEn- tee, Chris Canniff , and Steve King! sophomore goalie Steve Shannon; juniors Rich Felliceta Giles Taylor, and Regis Burkhardt; seniors Allen and Barraclough-, and the moondogs helped make the Bucs season an exciting and successful one. CRUISE ' 78 The 1978 cruise to Mediterranean departed on 17 June after many serious boiler problems. The moral of the cadets was very low at the onset but this cruise would eventually turn out for the best because of the great selection of ports of call. There were many interesting sights seen en route to the first port of call Barcelona, Spain. Among the fantastic were the Cape of Sargass in Portugal, the majestic Mountain Of Apes , and the Rock of Gi- braltar . Barcelona proved to be one of the best ports. Nes- tled on the southern coast of Spain, Barcelona was rich in culture and excitement. Many visited the Skyway and the historical fort for spectacular views of the city. The nightlife was equally exciting with most of the action going on around the Las Ramblas . Naples, Italy, the next port of call was considered at best sub-par but most took advantage of its proxim- ity to other sights nearby. Among these nearby places were Rome with its rich cultural and historic background, Mt. Vesivius, and the peaceful island of Capri. Then on to Pireaus, Greece which is a stone ' s throw away from Athens, Greece. Most sight-seeing, how ever, was confined to the latter hours of the day because of the lOOF plus temperatures. Many will remember the infamous wine Festival . The last foreign port of call, Majorca, was consid- ered by many to be the best. This Spanish resort island off of the southern coast of Spain provided some of the best beaches and sight-seeing available throughout the Mediterranean. Many cadets rented mopeds as an efficient and fun mode of transporta- tion to absorb most of the island as possible. After the long string of ports, the Bay State jour- neyed for fourteen days back to its home port of Buzzards Bay. Massachusetts. 146 Cruise ' 78 • Barcelona CRUISE ' 79 Cruise 79 departed late because the Bay State had been condemned so the school had to suffer the indignity of borrowing New York Maritime ' s Empire State . Still, most were eager to get on with the cruise even with the addition of other surmounting problems. Upon arrival at the first port, Quebec Canada, after many tedious days in the fog, the cadets were warmly received by the local Quebecois. Hundreds of locals swarmed to the ship for a tour. Cadets going ashore found a favorable exchange rate, many fine restaurants shops and much entertainment. After departing Quebec, it was on to St. George, Bermuda. Upon arriving in Bermuda the Empire State was greeted with beautiful skies and warm weather. Most enjoyed Bermuda to the max. Sunbathing, boating, scuba diving, shopping and sight - seeing were among the many activi- ties. Next stops Newport, Rhode Island and Boston, Massachu- setts took up the remaining liberty ports. Most cadets took advantage of the time to go home, unpack, and unwind from the shipboard pressures. 154 Cruise ' 79 ' At Sea 156 Bermuda • Cruise ' 79 158 Cruise ' 79 • Quebec 163 PRESIDENT JOHN AYLMER DR.
