As I write this message, the years of preparation for the Class of 1980 come to a close. The hour for you to assume your roles as officers and leaders is near at hand. I first met with your class on August 28, 1976, the day on which you completed the difficult two-week period of fourth class orientation. On that occasion, I delineated for you three fundamental leadership requirements. In this, my last formal communication with the Class of 1980, I can think of no better way to impart my own philosophy on what makes for personal happiness and success in this life than to review once again those three basic leadership concepts. KNOWLEDGE To lead is to teach, and one cannot possibly hope to teach other human beings how to perform in some particular job without first knowing completely and thoroughly the job himself. The Academy, through its faculty and staff, has given you enough knowledge to begin your careers, but the important thing to keep in mind is that the knowledge you now possess is only sufficient for a beginning. For the rest of your lives as leaders and teachers you must continue to be learners. Store up knowledge as you would a bank account. The dividends such an account will pay will translate into professional advancement, financial security and, what is most important of all, personal satisfaction. PERSONAL DISCIPLINE You must establish for yourself a code of personal control and behavior. There must be order in your daily existence for you to be happy and successful men and women. Lead always by example and not merely by precept. Beware of leading by the ' ' do as I say, not as I do ' ' concept, in truth, each of us is our own worst enemy. The greatest achievement in any man ' s lifetime is to be able to state with conviction that he has indeed mastered himself. 18

DEDICATION We, the class of 1980, in appreciation for showing genuine concern toward us all at a very important time in our lives, wish to dedicate our yearbook to Janet Zavrid. Thank you Janet for working so hard to make our senior year so enjoyable for all of us.

CONCERN FOR OTHERS You must develop a strong sense of interpersonal relations. Live your daily lives by the golden rule, treating all other persons as you would want them to treat you. Experience shows that the most successful people - both in their personal and professional lives - have a strong sense of empathy and compassion for their fellow human begins. One final thought: many of you will spend at least part of your lives at sea. Indeed, you very likely will fall in love and embrace the sea, much as a man and a woman would fall in love and unite themselves in marriage. Remember, though, that the sea is a far more formidable and demanding master or mistress than any mere mortal could ever be. Your own prepara- tion for and approach to the sea must, therefore, be appropriately thorough and devoted. Lee Harrington; RADM.
