This is The Mission of the Massachusetts Maritime Academy To Earn The Degree Of Bachelor Of Science In Nautical Science Or In Marine And Electrical Engineering 11 12 13 16 DEDICATION We, the class of 1980, in appreciation for showing genuine concern toward us all at a very important time in our lives, wish to dedicate our yearbook to Janet Zavrid. Thank you Janet for working so hard to make our senior year so enjoyable for all of us. As I write this message, the years of preparation for the Class of 1980 come to a close. The hour for you to assume your roles as officers and leaders is near at hand. I first met with your class on August 28, 1976, the day on which you completed the difficult two-week period of fourth class orientation. On that occasion, I delineated for you three fundamental leadership requirements. In this, my last formal communication with the Class of 1980, I can think of no better way to impart my own philosophy on what makes for personal happiness and success in this life than to review once again those three basic leadership concepts. KNOWLEDGE To lead is to teach, and one cannot possibly hope to teach other human beings how to perform in some particular job without first knowing completely and thoroughly the job himself. The Academy, through its faculty and staff, has given you enough knowledge to begin your careers, but the important thing to keep in mind is that the knowledge you now possess is only sufficient for a beginning. For the rest of your lives as leaders and teachers you must continue to be learners. Store up knowledge as you would a bank account. The dividends such an account will pay will translate into professional advancement, financial security and, what is most important of all, personal satisfaction. PERSONAL DISCIPLINE You must establish for yourself a code of personal control and behavior. There must be order in your daily existence for you to be happy and successful men and women. Lead always by example and not merely by precept. Beware of leading by the ' ' do as I say, not as I do ' ' concept, in truth, each of us is our own worst enemy. The greatest achievement in any man ' s lifetime is to be able to state with conviction that he has indeed mastered himself. 18 CONCERN FOR OTHERS You must develop a strong sense of interpersonal relations. Live your daily lives by the golden rule, treating all other persons as you would want them to treat you. Experience shows that the most successful people - both in their personal and professional lives - have a strong sense of empathy and compassion for their fellow human begins. One final thought: many of you will spend at least part of your lives at sea. Indeed, you very likely will fall in love and embrace the sea, much as a man and a woman would fall in love and unite themselves in marriage. Remember, though, that the sea is a far more formidable and demanding master or mistress than any mere mortal could ever be. Your own prepara- tion for and approach to the sea must, therefore, be appropriately thorough and devoted. Lee Harrington; RADM. ADMINISTRA TION EXECUTIVE VISE PRESIDENT, Commodore William R. With only four returning seniors, Head Coach Don Ruggeri, and his staff had their work cut out for them. The team ended with a very respectable 5-4 record, capped off with a season end- ing victory over rival Bridgewater State in the first annual Cranberry Bowl. This game marked the end of a four year career for Captains Tom Civiello, Mark Wertheimer and Chris Roller. For Civiello, it ended a V-fi year reign at Quarterback with 21 wins and six losses under his belt. His leadership and many clutch performances will be missed sorely, along with Chris Roller and Mark Wertheimer. Roller was super at defensive back and was all conference for the past two seasons, while 6 ' 5 Wertheimer ' s steady im- provement and hard work earned him much respect from opposing coaches. The remaining senior was a 5 ' 4 fire plug Matt Slaven, whose enthusiasm carried over to all his teamates. After dropping the first two ball games, the Buccaneers re- grouped, taking the next four games in a row. This included a 30-0 MMA white-washing, homecoming victory over Fra- mingham State, as the Bucs made there run at the Confer- ence title. However, the 7th game of the season proved to be the biggest loss as they dropped a 7-0 heartbreaker to Maine Maritime on some questionable officiating in the late stages of the game, which Football 120 was played under torrential downpour. For the Seniors it ended any Championship hopes. The fol- lowing week they were soundly beaten by U.N.H., who won the Conference. However, the last game against Bridgewater in the Cranberry Bowl saw four super, dedi- cated players go out in style for the Blue and Gold. The vic- tory was an emotional one, evidenced by tears in Civiel- lo ' s eyes after the game. To these four Seniors, we wish you the best of luck in the fu- ture. 121 The 1979 Soccer season was a year of rebuilding with some exceptionally talented players now in the program. Under the devoted and enthusiastic leadership of Coach Hendy, his goals were no less than State College Conference and Division Championship Team. With upgrading of teams played on his revitalizing of the Academy soccer these fu- ture goals are within reach. The squad was faced with limited pre-season practice time due to the late Training Cruise. Although the team was at a handicap, the group por- trayed great spirit and genuine affinity for hard work to com- bat this obstacle. The Captain, David Crowley, helping out as coach was mainly responsible for the good physical condi- tion of the team. A season record of 7-9-1 was definite improvement on last season ' s 5-6-2 record. Six of the nine losses were only by one goal. One of these losses being to North Adams who went on to become Confer- ence Champs. This showed the Bucs were not to be taken lightly anymore, ending the season with a solid win over Maine Maritime. The victory over Maine was further high- lighted by their return trip, stopping at the scene of an ac- cident and helping the vic- tims. Good luck in 1980. 123 125 This past season the tennis team at M.M.A. suffered sonne long afternoons as the squad went through a nine-match season without a win. Despite the 0-9 record, there were a number of bright spots in both Singles and Doubles play, led by Captain Dom Murphy. Junior Paul Braman led the squad with 5 total points on the year and signifi- cant contributions were made by Seniors Paul Wei, Toby Kitchener and Paul Place and Sophomores Mike Bedard and Pete Ledig. 127 The 79- ' 80 version of M.M.A. Basketball has the distinction of being the winningest teann in Academy history, posting a record of 14 wins and 12 losses - the first .500 or better record ever achieved on Taylor ' s Point. Led by Co-Captain Joe Pumphret (Sr., Hanover, MA) and Mark Dumais (Jr., E. Hartford, CT) the Bucs rallied to conquer their last five opponents, including rivals Coast Guard, Bridgewater State, Curry, Connecticut and Fitchburg State. The win over Bridgewater in Alumni Gym gave the Bucs their highest win total ever in the Conference with 6. As far as individual performances are concerned, Dumais en- joyed his third successive All-Conference season, highlighted by a 51-point outburst in the season ' s opening win at Fitchburg. Four year starter Joe Pumphet put away his 1000 point against Fitchburg State, only the 3rd player to do so. Four year letter- man Dave Sammy Rodrigues, although not a starter, was a su- per bench player and his contri- butions to the team ' s perfor- mance were instrumental in MMA basketball. Good Luck to mitt the Seniors! M.M.A. ' s Baseball team under Coach Bob Corradi com- pleted one of its most successful seasons in the school ' s history. This season the Buc Nine finished 25-11, and won a berth in the E.C.A.C. tournament for the 2nd con- secutive year. The captains and only two seniors on the club were John Whorf and Chris Roller. Both Whorfy and Rolls had super seasons. Whorf has set every offensive record in the book in his 4 years, while Roller has the school ' s base-stealing record and has batted over .300 ev- ery year. The potential of this years tournament team were obvious from the start. Junior pitcher Chris Yetten and Sophomore Rick Rollins fired consecutive no-hitters to win the Coast Guard tournament. From there on it was clear sailing as the Bucs won 12 straight games, then hit a Baseball slight tailspin at the end of the year. They rebounded nicely winning 5 in a row, ending the regular season with sweet double header victory ' s over Worcester State. This wrapped up their E.C.A.C. tournament bid. However, the inexperienced showed as they were soundly heated by top seeded Amherst College. Seniors thanks for 4 great sea- sons, and Good Luck. 133 136 143 146 Class Of 1981 GRADUATION D t aauLiif of ikt sMai.±aa iui.etii J [axitLnit c aadtnij join wiik i e Cadtii. of ike. They should be commended for their will- ingness and ability to pitch in and do a super fine job. That was how Maine State Trooper Bernard A. Lindsay lauded the efforts of the M.M.A. soccer team for their lifesaving ef- forts. After leaving Maine Maritime with a 4-2 win the team came across an accident in which the occupants were in dire straights. Because of their quick actions, one of the occupants survived and the other was revived but later died at the hospital. The members of the team were honored with a ceremony in the gym.
