THE TE 1969 nn.TAPD S BAY. MASS Noiv hear this . . . I The main function of the Massachusetts Mari- time Academy is to prepare young men to sail the ships of the American Merchant Marine as li- censed officers. This is accomplished in three in- tensive years of study and prepara- tion, the new midshipman undergoes a rigourous indoctrination and finds himself in a new environment. 7 The so called professional studies commence during the second year to- gether with added liberal arts courses. 1 1 1 1 ' . 1 A Km in It is at this point that the cadet decides whether to be an engineer or a deckman. Which ever course he chooses he must devote his attention to what is to be learned. 14 15 16 17 19 At the end of the first class year the graduating class is eligible to sit for a Coast Guard license as Third Mate or Third Assistant Engineer, receive a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nautical Science or Marine and Electrical Engineering, and a Commission as Ensign in the United States Naval Reserve. 24 Massachusetts Maritime graduates are in great demand throughout the maritime industry be- cause they are best qualified to do the job. V A Message from the President Professionally accredited since its beginning by the United States Coast Guard licensing requirements, the Massachusetts Mari- time Academy is now in the process of extending its 33-month course to a 43-month, or four-year course of instruction. This will make regional academic accreditation feasible and stengthen rather than weaken our permanent objective of excellence in maritime training. Thus, this catalog — the first full description of the Acad- emy and its objectives — comes at a most appropriate time. The success of the institutuion and its graduates over the past three-quarters of a century is certain promise of our success now and in the future. A. Instructor, Department of Naval Science Instructor, Department of Naval Science 32 ft i Faculty The training ship has always been an integral part of Massa- chusetts Maritime Academy training. 34 36 38 From this point Massachusetts Maritime Academy ' s reputa- tion for having a greater percent of its graduates pursue a nautical career than any other academy began to grow. 39 In 1909 the Enterprise was re- placed by the Ranger , later renamed the Rockport and saw service as a coastal patrol vessel during World War One. 42 Following WW I she was christened Nantucket and served until June 1949, when the academy was moved to its pres- ent location at Buzzards Bay. The gunboat Charleston then became the next training ship. This was the first all steel steam- ship to be used as a training vessel. 46 The Charleston served until 1957 when the U.S.S. Doyen was taken from the moth ball fleet and renamed U.S.T.S. Bay State . She served in most of the major cam- paigns in the Pacific during World War II and is still campaigning today as training ship at Massachusetts Maritime Academy. • 50 51 54 1 57 60 61 1 Cadet Organizations and Activities The Academic program at Massachusetts Maritime Academy is complemented by voluntary cadet participation in the following non-athletic organizations and activities. In each area of interest, a member of the faculty serves as advisor to provide guidance and continuity to the program. Cadet Publications The Academy has two student publications. The Spill Pipe is a student newspaper published periodically and the Muster is the annual yearbook. Ring Dance The annual Ring Dance is a well established tradition of the graduating class. A feature of the event is a precision drill by the Honor Guard. Band The Academy marching band is open to those cadets with talent and interest in this area. Rehearsals are held once or twice each week. Circle K Club This club is a junior branch of the Bourne Kiwanis Club and participates with that organization in its projects of responsible citizenship in the community. Weekly meetings are held. Newman Club Catholic cadets may affiliate themselves with this organization which exists to satisfy the spiritual, social and cutural needs of college level students. A Chaplain is provided for this activity by St. Margaret ' s parish in Buzzards Bay. Meetings are every other week. Propeller Club 0 The Student Port of the Propeller Club is chartered by the national organiza- tion and has as its purpose introduction of the cadet to the affairs of the maritime industry. The club meets every other week. Sailing Club The Academy has a variety of small craft available to cadets for recreational sailing. In addition there are three Shields one-design sloops which have been entered in local races, earning recognition in yachting circles. Rifle Club The Rifle Club provides an activity for cadets interested in the use of firearms. Practice is held regularly and as a member of the National Rifle Association, the club competes in local and regional N. R. A. competitions. Drama Club The Drama Club is a most recent addition to cadet club activities. Started in 1967 with the successful production of Stalag 17 , expanded .programs are being planned. 66 69 Athletic Program The Physical Education and Athletic Program assists in the preparation of each cadet for a physically active career in the U. S. Merchant Marine. The Battalion of Cadets is represented by varsity inter- collegiate teams in cross-country, soccer and rowing. The intra- mural program includes basketball, golf, touch football, vol- leyball, Softball, sailing and rowing. Tournaments are held and a champion named in competitive events. Special rewards in the form of special liberty and prizes are determined by the Athletic Board. The Maritime Academy is a member of the following: Colonial Inter-Collegiate Soccer Conference International Soccer Association National Rifle Association 72 81 STEPHEN A. Although we are slaves to this custom, we wish to express our conviction that this position in no way reflects our sincere appreciation to those who made this book possible through their generous support. From the smallest contribution in the patrons section, to the full page ads, each has given what he could, and in the agregate, this generosity has made the 1969 MUSTER possible.
