Mechanical engineering has played a central and important role in the develop- ment of our industrial society. Its concepts are as basic as its importance, starting with the fundamental concepts of heat and work, forces and motion, and materials and force. With advancements in science, mechanical engineers are faced with new problems, and new materials to work with. M.I.T. feels that the mechanical engineer should be trained to enter any part of the broad field, therefore, the basic funda- mentals are applied to broad categories of processes and machines. A cooperative course is available for students who might otherwise be unable to obtain first hand experience before graduation. In addition to the classroom and laboratory, there are three organizations where Course Two men can become better acquainted and in addition supplement their training. The student chapter of The American Society of Mechanical Engineers features talks by engineers of industry and Institute professors. The M.I.T. student Society of Automotive Engineers meets twice a month, and listens to guest speakers talk on recent automotive developments, or on subjects of general interest to all its members. Pi Tau Sigma is the national honorary mechanical engineering society. The Pi Kappa chapter, here at M.I.T. is composed of students who have been elected as a result of high scholastic standing, sound engineering judgement, personality, and a participation in extra-curricular activities.
