North Adams also defeated arch- rival Williams, 4-O, for Coach Susan Getchell T first win over the Purple Cows in either fie hockey or soccer since l974. Even though NASC bowed in a tough doubl overtime contest to Tufts, 3-I, in the post-s son tournament, the Mohawks' future appea to be bright. This was the first time that they had won more than once in a season. Sue Palladino, Karyn Forrest- er, Pam Rutter and freshman phenom- enon Mary Vaughn were among those who helped the Volleyballers to their best season ever. IO3 Men's The men's basketball team. under the guidance of new Head Coach Al Sokaitis. surprised many across the state by win- ning the MASCAC title. The Mohawks re- bounded from an upset loss in Westfield to eventually defeat Salem State, 92-87, in a tie-breaking contest. The win decided the conference championship in North Adams' favor and sent the hoopsters to the NCAA Division lll tournament at SMU for the second straight year. NASC lost its opening round contest in the tourney to the Corsairs, QI-75, and dropped the consolation game to the Llni- versity of Southern Maine, 84-60. Even though the Mohawks' performance was a disappointment, this season provided many pleasant memories for NASC hoop fanatics. Perhaps the most exciting win in North Adams' basketball history occurred on Dec. 9 when the Mohawks overcame a 47- point performance by Williams' Garcia Major to defeat the Ephmen, l04-99, in a double-overtime thriller that left all in at- tendance gasping for air. Guard Phil Bledsoe C23 points per gameb and center Bernard Alexander C20ppgD were each named to Division III All-Star teams, Co-captains Kevin Plankey and Don Edwards each exhibited leadership and provided effective defense, and Tony Paranto electrified crowds with his 601, accuracy from three-point range. L - N 095995 2 Women's The Women's Basketball team played better than its 6-I8 record. With a few breaks in several close games, the Mohawks could have ap- proached the .500 mark for the sea- son. NASC's hard luck was exacerbated late in the season when co-captain and point machine Nora Hartigan went down with a fractured leg. Nev- ertheless. the Mohawks scrapped their way to several victories behind the play of Palladino, Bonnie Cameron and Gail Bonefant. Freshmen Cheryl Williams and Chris Lisien provided some optimism for the future with their skill and hard work on the boards. rw- SM . , , ,rl -. --wiv? l, ,i ., 5 45 1 'ifllst If The NASC Hockey team at times re- sembled a wandering caravan. as all but eight of its games were played on the road this season. The most frustrating loss of the year for NASC and its coach, Bill Turner, who will be leaving North Adams at the end of the semester, occurred at Williams on Feb. I9. The Mohawks gave the Cows all they could handle for two and half periods, but repeat- edly foiled by Williams' goalie, Mark Morrison, during a late flurry.
